Publication 20. Publication An Analytical Approach to Identify Design Criteria for Reducing Earthquake Risks in Residential Interiors(Istanbul Teknik Universitesi, Faculty of Architecture, 2023) Garip, S. Banu; Garip, Ervin; Birgönül, Zeynep; GÜZELCİ, HANDANA vital measure to prevent earthquake risks is to retrofit existing buildings or design and construct resistant structures. After increasing the earthquake resistance of buildings, measures taken in building interiors comes to the forefront. In the scope of this study, comprehensive analytical research is conducted to identify the criteria for reducing earthquake risks in the design of residential interior spaces. Reviewing the literature of both national and international publications using the keywords and phrases “Earthquake and Interior Design” “Earthquake and Furniture Design”, “Earthquake and Architectural Design”, “Earthquake and Materials”, “Precautions for Earthquake Damages”, “Earthquake Psychology” is employed as a method. In the next step, criteria extracted from the content analysis are categorized, analyzed and evaluated systematically. Together with this research, a set of measures to reduce earthquake risks for the interior design of residential interiors was presented. It also includes risks and strategies related to categorized interior elements, which designers can use in the design process. Many people could be inside residences, where most daily life is spent during an earthquake. This describes the study’s widespread impact. The design criteria presented are expected to be a source that includes a set of categorized data with a holistic approach to reduce risks, leading to safe design, and ensuring up-to-date continuity of knowledge for future designs.Publication Archi-Mimesis as a Design Doctrine(Deniz Yengin, 2019) Demirkan, Özgür; USTA, AYHAN; Ergin, EmreThis study was based on a discussion of the relationship between mimesis and architectural design. Mimesis was accepted as one of the oldest and most basic concepts of artistic and literary efforts, a method to learn and produce a representation of reality from ancient periods to today. However, mimesis is not simply used as imitation, even in ancient periods. Mimesis has a strong relationship with various parameters like the physical material reality of the world, the era, the things the era brings, and the worldview, knowledge, and experience of the designer. In this context, this study is based on the theorem of the internalization of the objective world in the designing process and the mimetic approach in the designing process by including individual approaches in the creation process. To test this theorem, a workshop, conceptualized as “Archi-Mimesis,” and accepting mimesis as creative designing doctrine, was organized. We describe Archi-Mimesis as mimesis or re-representation of the architecture, which is different from other nature-based methods like biomimetic, through the interface of mimetic methods maintained by considering reality through the creativity of architectural design and innovation oriented structure.Publication Architectural Episodes 02: New Dialogues in Architectural Education and Practice(İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi, 2022) Kolektif; ed., Neslihan Dostoğlu; ed., Emel Birer; ed., Esin Hasgül; ed., H. Nur Kızılyaprak; ed., Merve Aksoy Oral; ed., Dilara GürPublication An Architectural Query of Anthropocene Era: Planned Obsolescence(Kare Publishing, 2023) AYDIN, HANIM GÜL; BİRER, EMELAfter Modernity, the human has become the subject, and the world redefined by the human has turned into a painting. However, the efforts of human subjectivity to reveal the world in the Anthropocene Era, with negative practices such as the “planned obsolescence theory,” which is the research subject, even prepares for the end of its existence. According to the research hypothesis evaluated through the theory’s effect on architectural problems, “secularization should take place against planned obsolete architecture.” The research aims to show that positive feedback can be provided in society and ecology by reversing architectural consumption. It is to open up for discussion that architecture, which is left in the tension of life and death but revived by the urbanites and nature despite the negativity of decay, can be sustained by becoming secularized. How planned obsolete architectures become secularized is revealed through visual documents and tables and discourse and descriptive analysis methods through architectures of different scales and geographies, which can be reactivated in human-nature activity while in crisis of decay. At the micro and macro scale of architecture, Hawthorne Plaza Shopping Center, Banker Han (Banker Kastelli), Doel Village, and Houtouwan Village were selected as purposeful examples.Publication An Assessment of Professional Practice Training in Undergraduate(Deniz Yengin, 2019) BOSTANCIOĞLU, ESRA; Gemci, Kevser KesimThe scope of the architectural profession, one of the oldest professions in human history, has changed with the advent of technology. Likewise, architectural education also changes and improves all the time. Accrediting bodies evaluate architectural education and improve them through competence activities. In this study, the requirements identified by National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), an international accreditation body, and the national accreditation body Architecture Accreditation Board (MIAK) have been reviewed, upon which it has been found out that professional practice has an important share in architectural education but has not been the subject of current research. Therefore, the study aims to assess the situation in Turkey in terms of undergraduate architectural education with respect to professional practice and identify the weaknesses thereof, hence contributing to architectural education. In this context, the professional practice requirements among the NAAB and MIAK requirements have been reviewed and the areas that need to be covered in terms of professional practice within undergraduate architecture programmes have been identified. The professional practice courses in undergraduate architecture programmes and the course contents have been analysed to demonstrate the current situation of professional practice training in undergraduate architecture programmes in Turkey. The data for the analysis of courses and course contents have been gathered from the webpages of universities. Content analysis method has been used in assessing course contents.Publication Augmented Reality Experience in an Architectural Design Studio(Springer, 2023) Alp, Neşe Çakıcı; YAZICI, YASEMİN ERKAN; Öner, DilanThanks to the developing technology, different methods and tools are used in architectural representation, and architects contribute to developing these tools. Architects can easily model their designs with computer technologies and even make them visible in the environment with augmented reality technologies. Also, it is thought that these technologies will become widespread in basic architectural education over time. This study conducted a practice at the undergraduate architecture level using augmented reality technology. Within the scope of the study, the predisposition of students who experience augmented reality technologies to new representation, gender, course period, familiarity with playing computer games, the effect of computer programs that they can use in their previous augmented reality experience and designs if any, and the correlation between them has been tried to be revealed with this study. In this context, a study was carried out with thirteen students in the architectural design studio. Students were expected to parametrically design indoor exhibition elements using Rhinoceros 3D software and the Grasshopper plugin in the study. Then, an experimental augmented reality study was conducted with the Fologram, in which the students transferred these virtual exhibition elements they designed to the real indoors and reshaped them according to the space. Afterwards, a questionnaire consisting of five independent and ten dependent variables was applied to the students. The survey results were analysed with the IBM SPSS Statistics program. According to the results obtained, significant results were determined between 4 independent variables and one dependent variable.Publication The City Experience with Location-Based Media: An Examination Through Cognitive Maps(Konya Technical University, 2021) IAVARONE, AYŞENUR HİLAL; HASGÜL, ESİN; BAŞAR, EROLPurpose The physical space has been an important value for supporting human experience. With the development of mobile devices and location-based media, these technologies have been increasingly present in our virtual spatial experience and the experience of physical city has been changed permanently. Accordingly, this paper aims to discuss the experience potential of urban space with location-based technologies. Design/Methodology/Approach The research structure of this study is based on the literature of location-based media and 'Space of flow' theory. Within the methodology, a workshop is conducted to review the cognitive mappings of the virtual city experience. The workshop is structured through two segments: Documenting the spatial experience revealed using location-based media made by cognitive mappings and testing participants' direct experiences within structured questionnaire-based interviews and finally, interpretating of the obtained data. Findings This paper provides an experiential examination of the relationship between the usage of the degree of location-based media and cognitive experience. Findings point out that experience may differ depending on the media interface used and it is controversial comparing with the physical space experience with its multiple relationships. Research Limitations/Implications The research subject had been exemplified with limited location-based media in a specific location. Originality/Value The proposed method of examining the degree of spatial experience by the location-based media linking with interviews determines the originality of the study. There are also limited studies on the topic of location-based media by focusing on the users' cognitive maps.Publication A Comperative Study on the Influence of Mineral Additives to the Physicomechanical Properties of NHL Mortars Cured in Water(Gazi University, 2021) GÜR, DİLARA; Acun Özgünler, SedenThis paper focuses on producing a natural hydraulic lime (NHL) mortar with metakaolin, expanded perlite and tuff additives for the purpose of repairing historic masonry. The experimental study was based on laboratory tests for determining the mechanical and physical properties of NHL mortars with mineral additives, under standard and water curing conditions at 7, 28 and 90-day testing periods. Following preliminary tests for selecting most favourable materials; flexural strength, compressive strength, adhesion strength, modulus of elasticity and ultrasound tests were conducted for obtaining mechanical performance. Adhesion strength of mortars were determined by applying each mortar to the most common historic masonry materials. Physical performance of the pozzolan added mortars were investigated through; apparent density, bulk density, water permeability, capillary absorption, water vaporpermeability, porosity tests. Regardless of mineral additive type; water cured mortars reached higher physico-mechanical properties in comparison with the ones cured in relative humidity. Overall, water cured natural hydraulic lime mortars with specific amounts of mineral addition are found promising for the repair of historic masonry.Publication A Construction Design Experience in Emergency Distance Education: Detail Patterns(Ahmet Fidan, 2022) Kızılyaprak, Hülya Nur; OSKAY, BERKAYSystematic thinking in construction design provides guidance for architecture students, especially in establishing cause-effect relationships between the concepts of function, constructability, and visual effect. The act of detailing requires a systematic organization in which the inputs and outputs of the consecutive actions following the conceptual design are clearly revealed. It is observed that systematic approaches in the constructiondue to design field are limited in quantity and quality as a consequence of the studies on the literature and applications in the field of education. Therefore, a case study aimed at investigating the effects of systematic thinking construction design education was conducted. The "detail patterns" approach in architectural education constitutes the starting point of this study. In this context, within the scope of the "Construction Design" course planned for students who are interested in architectural technology, alternative approaches to systematic detailing and bringing together the sub-systems that make up the building system were emphasized. For the implication of systematic and holistic thinking in construction design practice, it has been focused on “detail patterns” approach, which includes the basic principles of detailing in Edward Allen's book entitled “Architectural Detailing: Function, Constructability, Aesthetics”. The Construction Design course covered in this study was conducted entirely in emergency distance education conditions during the 2020-2021 Spring semester. All meetings, discussions and submissions have been made whitin digital format in the limits of the distance education platform used. The "Designing Modules for Learning" model was used as the primary method for developing the course the structure . The target and learning outcomes of the course were determined, and the detail patterns approach was transformed into a 14-week lesson plan. For assessment, both student achievement evaluation and course evaluation criteria were determined with the constructional aligning approach according to the learning outcomes. Evaluations were scored by the researchers with a 5-unit Likert scale. It has been determined that positive results have been obtained in the students' ability to assess the building as a whole, to develop knowledge in the field of construction design, to use the theoretical and practical knowledge on architectural detailing process, to solve the problems encountered by using systematic methods and to think interdisciplinary in problem solving and practice.Publication Contributions of Art in Public Space to the Riverside Urbanity: Amasya Examplar(Istanbul University Research Institute of Turkology, 2022) BİRER, EMELAmasya is a multilayered city with the Yesilirmak river flowing through and historical Yaliboyu houses on the riverbank in the city center. This area has been the object of attempts to transform it into a tourist attraction. The Yaliboyu Promenade, which was built by filling the area between the Yaliboyu houses and the Magdenus Bridge and the Tas Bridge in the south of Yesilirmak, started to become a public space on which art began to take place after the 2000s. How the art performed in the riverside area affects the urban design is the departure point of this study. The research question is whether the public artwork along the riverbank promenade contributes to the urban image. The aim is to investigate the artwork on the bank and discuss their relationships to the city. The methodology consists of one phase is about the urban reading method of Lynch, the positions of the artwork as focal points have been discussed. Findings show that in the existence of a historical texture, art fails to have the aspired effect. What fits better the future projection is to implement aesthetic public art to revive new urban areas designed in the public areas of the city for the different focal points. The culture and built environment relations are more crucial when changes in both are more rapid and excessive since such changes can severely threaten continuity in the built environment and culture and may have undesirable physical, social and culturel consequences. Environmental cues which communicate meanings at different levels are very helpful in studying culture and built environment relations as well as changes in both them across different areas and over time. Than the task is, how one can study what they communicate, how they communicate, which are the most important ones, how one can analyze those cues and what meanings they communicate to the local and other people. In this paper the theoretical framework as well as the model for analyzing changes in culture and the built environment is established. Research methods and the procedures are discussed in detail and a comprehensive research methodology for analyzing the culture and built environment relations via environmental cues is proposed. The proposed approach can be used for different environments, at different scales as well as in incorporating the values, meanings and lifestyles of the different user groups, in designing the new.
