Çalışmada 118 çocuğun oyuncak tercihleri, oyuncağı tercih etmeme nedenleri ve bu nedenlerin toplumsal cinsiyet algısı ile ilişkisi ortaya koyulmuştur. Araştırmanın verileri araştırmacılar tarafından seçilen 22 oyuncak görseli ve yine araştırmacılar tarafından oluşturulmuş “Oyuncak Tercihi Görüşme Formu” üzerinden toplanmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, kız ve erkek çocukların oyuncak seçimlerinin farklılaştığı ve çocukların toplumsal cinsiyetlerine uygun seçimlerde bulundukları belirlenmiştir. Çocuklarının yaşları arttıkça oyuncaklara ilişkin seçici davrandıkları ve oynadıkları oyuncak sayısının ve çeşitliliğin azaldığı belirlenmiştir. Çocukların yaşları ilerledikçe oyuncakları cinsiyetçi nedenlerden dolayı seçmedikleri; çocuğun yaşı büyüdükçe oyuncaklara ilişkin daha kalıp yargısal tercihlerde bulunduğu, bu tutumun küçük yaşlarda pek görülmediği belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca, çocukların oyuncak tercihlerinin oyuncağın rengi, aile, akran ve sosyal çevrenin bakış açısından ve ebeveynler arasındaki geleneksel rol paylaşımından etkilendiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Araştırmanın verileri Kişisel Bilgi Formu ve Rohner tarafından geliştirilen Ebeveyn Kabul- Red Ölçeği (Anne Formu) kullanılarak toplanmıştır.Publication An analysis of preschool teachers’ sense of efficacy: A case of TRNC(2017-04) TORAN, MEHMET; 127979Determining the factors that affect teachers' competences has a decisive role in revealing the quality of teaching process. In this context, it is important to identify professional variables affecting the self-efficacy of preschool teachers. For this reason, it is aimed to investigate which professional variables influence preschool teachers' sense of efficacy. In the research, a descriptive research model was adopted. The working group of the study is composed of 191 preschool teachers participating in public nurseries and kindergartens in the TRNC, and also those participating to the research as a volunteer. The Professional Information Form and the Teacher’s Sense of Efficacy Scale were used as data collection tools in the study. Statistical analyses suitable for the analysis of the data were applied by applying the normality tests to the collected data. According to the findings obtained from the analysis made, except for the school type the preschool teachers graduated and the number of children, factors such as the graduated department, the place of residence, the duration of professional experience, the economic competence, and the educational environment were found to affect the self-efficacy of preschool teachers. It has been emerged that the characters found in the cartoons have proper behaviors and appearances in terms of gender stereotypes and that the cartoon contributed to the production of gender stereotypes. It was seen in the cartoon that housework such as cooking, cleaning, childrearing is always done by the mother and work such as driving, gardening and keeping the animals is done the father and the grandfather. In the episodes watched, it was observed that female characters wear pink and purple dresses while male characters have colors like blue, yellow, green on their clothes. It was also found that play and toy preferences of girls and boys in the cartoon are conformed with the gender stereotypes. When considering that majority of children watch cartoons and identify themselves with this character, it can be said that the problem of gender inequality needs to be solved in the cartoon and the messages within the content should be reorganized to achieve women-men equality.Publication An Examination of Turkish preschool curriculum’s effect on children’s concept acquisition(Elsevier, 2012) Temel, Zeynep Fulya; TORAN, MEHMET; 127979; 7909The aim of this study is to examine the effect of Turkish preschool curriculum on children’s concept acquisition. The research was carried out assessing children on three occasions, on September 2008, January 2009, and June 2009, respectively. Research was conducted on 24 children who were 5 years old, and schooled according to Turkish preschool curriculum. Bracken Basic Concept Scale-revised (BBCS-R), which has six subtests, was used as data collection instrument. For analyzing the data suitable statistic method was used. Analysis of the Impact of the Covid-19 Quarantine on Child-Rearing Attitudes(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd., 2022) TORAN, MEHMET; Özden, BülentThe present study aims to examine the impact of the time spent by mothers at home with their children during the quarantine period that was implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic on the mothers' child-rearing attitudes, taking into consideration some variables and the experiences of mothers. The study was designed using embedded mixed design, in which qualitative and quantitative research methods were used together. The quantitative research group consisted of 673 mothers and the qualitative research group consisted of 16 mothers. The research data was gathered online using the Lime Survey platform, and the interviews with the mothers were also held online. Demographic information form, the Child Rearing Attitude Scale, and a semi-structured interview form were used as data collection tools. Moderator variable analysis was used for the quantitative research data and descriptive analysis was used for the qualitative research data in support of the quantitative data. The findings revealed that the mothers' child-rearing attitudes changed depending on the variables concerning the children; however, the quarantine period instituted due to COVID-19 had an impact on the mothers' child-rearing attitudes depending on the variables of age and number of children. The qualitative findings obtained from the interviews supported the quantitative findings. Cartoons are known to be the most watched program while children watching television. The development and expansion of the cartoons industry resulted in cartoon characters to be well-known and accepted in the variety of society. In this context, the basic reason for this study is to determine the reasons of the Caillou, which followed by many children in recent times and well-known in various sectors in Turkey, is preferred by children. For this purpose, the data were collected in the range of 36-72 months of 126 children in the province of Zonguldak, Sinop and Ankara during the 2010-2011 academic year`s spring semester. The data were collected through semi-structured interview generated by researches and pictures of children. The researchers primarily wanted from children to draw their favorite cartoon character and then tell something about the drawing. Subsequently, researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with children. Survey method was used for the study and the data interpreted via descriptive analysis technique. According to the findings of the study why children specified that they like Calliou the most because of his games and his toys and the most unpopular feature of his wrongdoing behaviour form time to time. Children, who participate the survey, answered for the question of which character they want to be; the girls said that Caillou`s sister Rozi and the boys stated that they wanted to be Caillou. This finding of the research may be explained that children indentify the main hero of the cartoon with their sex.Publication Challenges of COVID-19: Preschool Teachers’ Views and Experiences During the Quarantine(İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi, 2022) Güneş, Gökhan; TORAN, MEHMETThe purpose of the study is to analyze the evidence gathered from the preschool teachers’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine. The study was carried out with 11 teachers who have professional experience ranging between 3 to 19 years from private and public preschools. The study was specified according to criterion sampling strategy under the purposeful sampling method. The data gathered via open-ended questions and the phenomenology method, one of the qualitative research designs, was used. The qualitative content analyses technique was applied for analyzing the data. It was reached remarkable themes about the preschool teachers’ pedagogical challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic based on the analysis of data. The themes and their subthemes are as follows: The theme “challenges in the distance education process” contains the sub-themes of children, teachers, and parents, the theme “views about educational policy in new normal” contains the sub-themes of technological infrastructure problems, unpreparedness, and negative attitudes, the theme “expectations for the improvement of distance education” contains the sub-themes of teacher training, effective family involvement activities, and technology-based programs.Publication Changing Face of Plays: A Comparative Research of Childhood Plays of Older Adults and Plays of Today’s(2018) Alabay, Erhan; YAĞAN, SEVCAN; 55019; 139651The aim of this research is to compare favourite childhood plays of adults aged 60 plus and favourite plays of children between 6 to 10 years old. The research is structured in basic qualitative research methods. Participants of the research, living in İstanbul Province, are composed of 99 adults aged 60 plus and 99 childr en aged between 6 and 10. In this study, demographic information form and structured interview form for participants were used. Data were analysed through content analysis method. In the wake of findings, while 85.86% of the adults have stated that when they were children, they loved outdoor plays, it is seen that 36.37% of today’s children love outdoor plays. Additionally, 91.92% of adults loved group plays, 75.76% of them loved plays with vehicles and 63.64% loved plays that require movement whereas 56.57% of children prefer plays that do not require movement, 49.50% of them prefer individual plays and 31.32% prefer plays with vehicles. Besides, it has been detected that 34.34% of today’s children primarily love and prefer plays related with technology.Publication Child acceptance-rejection behaviors of lower and upper socioeconomic status mothers(Scientific Journal Publishers, 2010) Erkan, Nefise Semra; TORAN, MEHMET; 12619; 127979In this study we sought to show the difference between the child acceptance-rejection behaviors of lower and upper socioeconomic status mothers, and establish whether or not their acceptance-rejection behaviors were affected by their age, and the number and sex of their children. A total of 246 mothers living in Diyarbakır, 123 with lower and 123 with upper socioeconomic status, was enrolled in the study. Data were gathered by using a personal information form and the Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire-Mother Form (Rohner, Saavedra, & Granum, 1980). The results revealed a significant difference between lower and upper socioeconomic status mothers' child acceptance-rejection behaviors (t = 7.709; p < 0.05). While the mothers' age (r = .202; p < 0.05) and number of children (r = .238; p < 0.01) were positively correlated to their acceptance-rejection behaviors, their children's sex did not make a significant difference to the mothers' acceptance-rejection behaviors.
