We first of all summarise the characteristics of the Alevi community and contextualise the changing role of the Alevi minority in Turkish politics. We focus on Alevi demands as part of the EU adjustment reforms and negotiation process, and present the official responses from the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government as well as the EU authorities.Publication Metadata only Alevis in Turkish Politics(2011) Bilgili, Nazlı Çağın; Çarkoğlu, Ali; 112265; 125588Publication Metadata only Anthony Giddens and international relations: structuration, modernity and globalization(Uluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneği, Söğütözü Cad No 43, Tobb-Etü Binası, Oda No 364, Söğütözü, Ankara 06560, Turkey, 2015) EMRE, YUNUS; 141804This paper aims to examine the subjects which are pertaining to International Relations in the works of Anthony Giddens and also to evaluate different uses of such issues in the International Relations literature. Believing in the prominence of gender gap in politics due to the authority of decision-making that belongs to the political fi gures, this article focuses on the increase –although slow- in female representation in the Turkish Parliament with a special focus on the last two general elections that were held under the infl uence of massive campaigns by women’s organizations. The last general elections held on June 12, 2011 marked an approximately 60% increase in the number of women parliamentarians which rose from 48 to 78. The article argues that three actors –civic actors, international actors namely the EU and the representatives of the Kurdish movement- have been infl uential in this increase by raising media and public attention on the topic. The campaigns that attracted great attention in the media, the emphasis of the EU progress reports on gender equality and the 40% gender quota applied among the Kurdish parliamentarians are some of the topics discussed with regard to their infl uence on the recent increase in female representation in Turkey.Publication Metadata only Challenges to accession of Turkey to the European Union(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, Inc, Commerce Place, 350 Main St, Malden 02148, Ma USA, 2009-05) Akkaraca Köse, Melike; 114549Publication Open Access Changing trends in europeanization: Turkey’s alignment on transport(2019) ERTÜRK, AHMET CEMALThe current stalemate between the EU and Turkey directly affects much policy implementation, ranging from democracy to the economy. In terms of escaping from this crisis, the current proposed solutions seem to be only effective in a handful of areas. Concerning Turkey's Europeanization, there is certain inertia. In a fraught period, transport policy is a surprising success story, with its stability and continuation in the alignment process. This study investigates the main reasons and driving forces behind this curious case. The changing dynamics between different periods has not only changed the background factors but also contributed to a progressive approach, which has once again showed the importance of domestic political preferences when it comes to Europeanization.Publication Metadata only Classification of War(Oxford: Inter-disciplinary Press, 2011) YESEVİ, ÇAĞLA GÜL; ; 140841War will be defined in broader perspective. War between nation-states will be disregarded. War comprises organized psychological pressures, all kinds of restraints, physical and psychological abuses, usage of aggressive terminology, strict and dogmatic political and social thoughts. In that sense, first category of war is war against women especially in my own society, people living in Turkey including both Turks and Kurds. Women have been facing religious pressures as veiling. Some other women have demanded the freedom of veiling in the official life. They haven’t been educated as men. They have been beaten, forced to do all households. They have been forced to get married in their early ages. The arranged marriages and polygamy have been other problems of women. It was settled in the minds, myths, terminology, narratives, and customs, social, economic and political life of people. Secondly, terrorism will be investigated. The history and activities of terrorist organization, Kurdistan Workers’ Party against Turkey will be revealed. Thirdly, the state’s war against its own citizens will be explained. This war could also be defined with the war between the government and the people. Both democratic and authoritarian states through party in the power could wage war against their own citizens by creating Fear Empire. Governments could use their legislative powers against citizens who have antagonistic ideas. Economic support has been given to supporters of government. The causes of judicial case related to Ergenokon Crime organization will be stated. Allegedly, this organization comprising nationalist and secular intellectuals and members of high military command tried to form coup d’état against government of Justice and Development Party. Many people were detained, long trial process has been continuing.Publication Metadata only Confronting 'Uncivil Society' and the 'Dark Side of Globalization': Are Sociological Concepts up to the Task?(SAGE PUBLICATIONS LTD, 6 BONHILL STREET, LONDON EC2A 4PU, ENGLAND, 2001-11-30) Rumford, CInternational terrorism is frequently categorized as one element of 'uncivil society' or as the 'dark side of globalization.' The paper examines these concepts, finding them unhelpful in understanding the context for the September 11 attacks in the US. Their weakness derives in large part from the uncritical usage of the terms 'civil society?' and 'globalization' characteristic of much contemporary sociological work. In consequence, sociology is in danger of being marginalized from public debate about the most important issues of our day.Publication Embargo Considering Pipeline Politics in Eurasia: South Stream, Turk Stream and TANAP(2018) YESEVİ, ÇAĞLA GÜL; 140841After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the newly independent Republics entered the international arena. Motives that drove these changes were either related to intentions to prevent the undesirable repetition of the past circumstances, or to political actors’ short-term goals. Some of these changes seem to have reached their objectives while some others have not. The volatility in electoral institutions’ design was also strongly associated with the fluctuations Turkey experienced in terms of democratic consolidation. In this respect, the Turkish case may offer a variety of useful empirical material for the prospective designers of new institutions in a number of former communist countries that are likely to experience further stages of democratic transition/consolidation in the years ahead.Publication Embargo Female terrorism(2014-05) Yesevi, Çağla Gül; 140841This paper aims at highlighting reasons behind female terrorism. There has been a debate that maternal ethic and maternal thinking gendered from motherhood and non-violence. In that sense, women have been symbolized as mothers for peace. Both maternal ethic and feminist approaches helped construction of women as destroyers of life. Examining human security, the changing nature of terrorism should be considered by referring to violent female terrorism. The social and psychological reasons for being female terrorists were investigated by referring mainly to the Baider Meinhoff Gang, Palestinian terrorist organizations, and Chechen terrorist organizations in this study. The psychological and social factors of female terrorism were examined.Publication Metadata only Fragile Balances: Turkish Foreign Policy on the Sovereignty of the Dodecanese Islands (1940-1947)(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2-4 Park Square, Milton Park, Abingdon Ox14 4Rn, Oxon, England, 2018) PAPUÇÇULAR, HAZALThe Dodecanese Islands became a subject of diplomatic negotiations both during and after World War II. This article examines the position of Turkish foreign policy on the sovereignty of the islands. It argues that the analysis of the subject necessitates a multi-faceted approach which takes both the concerned parties' stance and Turkey's post-war international status into consideration. This study shows that Britain and the US frankly favoured the Greek claims after 1940. Accordingly, it asserts that in the post-war period, Turkey constituted its diplomacy over the Dodecanese based on the rising Soviet threat against which it sought support from the Western powers. It also shows that Ankara sometimes made attempts to intervene in the process regarding the Dodecanese although they were short-lived and inconclusive.Publication Metadata only From Neo-Corporatism to associative democracy: civil society's long and narrow path in the European Union(Uluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneği, Sogutozu Cad No 43, Tobb-Etu Bınası, Oda No 364, Sogutozu, Ankara 06560, Turkey, 2015) Zihnioğlu, Özge; 109954The existence at the European level of civil society organizations (CSOs), acknowledged nowadays as indispensable actors of both the integration process and the enlargement strategy of the European Union, has a long history. This article examines the European Union's initiatives towards CSOs, which could now be accepted as a policy on its own, and the development of this relation in terms of neo-corporatism and associative democracy models. This article reveals the transformation of this policy from the one that initially had aspects of neo-corporatist model only and thus included a limited group of CSOs, to one that involves aspects of associative democracy comprising a larger group of CSOs, following European Social Dialogue, Civil Dialogue and the recent enlargement strategy of the Union.Publication Metadata only Gendered Populist Mobilization(2019-06-17) KOUROU, NUR SİNEMPopulism has been stormed through the discussion and scope on political science. It has been discussed in many ways and associated with different issues. Even though the abundant of the literature, as many scholars mention, populism and gender have rarely considered (Spierings and Zaslove; 2017). One ofthe first studies has been emerged by Mudde and Kaltwasser (2015), but its conclusion discourages the researchers. The finding said that “the relationship between populism and gender is relatively weak but highly complex” (Mudde and Kaltwasser 2015: 36). This is important and also true because when populism declares itself in the antagonism between the people and the elite, the issue of gender is staying as an invisible topic. However, there is one crucial and certain outcome about the relationship between the populist parties and gender which is that the populist parties receive more male than female support (Spierings and Zaslove 2017; 822). However, there is a challenging situation in the case of Turkey where the percentage of female and male votes are even for JDP which a radical right populist party is also (KONDA; 2018). Therefore, this deviation frames the research question for this paper. This paper aims to answer how does populism mobilize the women in Turkey? I believe that empirical perspective provides a way out from complexity and uncertainty. Beyond the theoretical meaning of populism, I consider using the lens of populism to understand its mobilizational efforts within the society (Jansen; 2011). For this matter, the following questions will be answered to understand the mobilizational efforts of JDP in the level of female constituents. Firstly, “is there any populist organizational link between the JDP and female constituents? I will investigate the organizational structure of JDP women’s branches to answer the question. Secondly, “how is populism articulated as a mobilizational tool in the level of women’s branch?” For that, semi-structured and in-depth interviews will be conducted to analyze populist appeals in their links with the female. The third question is directly related to the relationship between the party and its women’s branches. I mean “how does the party mobilize women’s branches in terms of populist perspective? In a nutshell, the rising emanation of populism through political life has influenced various part of society. Even though women are ignored in political life, they have an active role in the case of Turkish populism for the JDP’s consolidation. Therefore, as an important part of the JDP, women’s branches will be unit of analysis of the research to represent the relationship between the populism and gender.Publication Metadata only Global media governance: A beginner's guide.(Sage Publications Ltd, 6 Bonhill Street, London Ec2A 4Pu, England, 2003-06) Rumford, C.
