The paper examines these concepts, finding them unhelpful in understanding the context for the September 11 attacks in the US. Their weakness derives in large part from the uncritical usage of the terms 'civil society?' and 'globalization' characteristic of much contemporary sociological work. In consequence, sociology is in danger of being marginalized from public debate about the most important issues of our day.Publication Metadata only Placing Democratization within the Global Frame: Sociological Approaches to Universalism, and Democratic Contestation in Contemporary Turkey(BLACKWELL PUBL LTD, 108 COWLEY RD, OXFORD OX4 1JF, OXON, ENGLAND, 2002-05) Rumford, CThe process of democratization in Turkey is enhanced by both proximity to the European Union's enlargement process and universalistic discourses of personhood rights. and. at the same time, compromised by a nationalistic rejection of global human rights and democratic norms and state-led resistance to political pluralism. One key feature of the democratization process is the way in which contending parties - the Kemalist elite, religious and ethnic minorities, the European Union attempt to legitimise their claims by appeals to universal principles. The paper examines three sociological/social theory approaches to universalism (Beck, Laclau. Robertson) and demonstrates their usefulness for an understanding of political contestation in contemporary Turkey. It is argued that the work of these theorists allows us to move beyond a simplistic polarisation of the universal and the particular, where the state represents the universal and minorities the particular. The conceptualisation of universalism advanced by Beck. Laclau and Robertson points to the need to understand the processes of democratization within a sociologically informed globalization framework.Publication Metadata only Balancing democracy(Millennium-Journal of International Studies, 2003) Rumford, C.Publication Metadata only Is Southeastern Europe doomed to instability? Turkey-EU relations and human and political rights in the context of cosmopolitan democratization(Sage Publications Ltd, 6 Bonhill Street, London Ec2A 4Pu, England, 2003-06) Rumford, C.Turkey's relationship with the European Union (EU) is dominated by issues of democratization and human rights and is best approached from a perspective which understands the nature of the cosmopolitan regimes which work to regulate the democratic practices of nation-states and animate citizens and minority groups striving to assert their rights. Cosmopolitan or transnational processes of democratization are frequently perceived by Turkey's Kemalist political elites as being contrary to the interests of domestic harmony and a threat to national integrity. It is argued that the apparent reluctance of the Kemalist elites to embrace greater pluralism and align with the EU's Copenhagen criteria is in fact an attempt to 'remake' themselves through political choices framed by global opportunities. In this sense, the mobilization of nationalist resistance to outside 'interference' is calculated to secure legitimacy in an increasingly uncertain political environment. In addition, Turkey is increasingly dependent upon the very global processes that are perceived as a threat to national sovereignty, and EU standards and norms offer the means by which Turkey can safeguard national integrity. Publication Metadata only Challenges to accession of Turkey to the European Union(Wiley-Blackwell Publishing, Inc, Commerce Place, 350 Main St, Malden 02148, Ma USA, 2009-05) Akkaraca Köse, Melike; 114549Publication Metadata only A Forgotten Promise Ending the Isolation of Turkish Cypriots(2010) Akgün, İbrahim Mensur; Tiryaki, Sylvia; 103810; 107197Publication Metadata only Islamist Movements in Turkey(2010) Çarkoğlu, Ali; Bilgili, Nazlı Çağın; 125588; 112265Publication Open Access Obstacles Obsessions and Prospects of Turkey's EU Membership(2011) Akgün, İbrahim Mensur; Tiryaki, Sylvia; 103810; 107197Turkey has aspired to become a member of the EU since 1959 and has managed to accomplish several significant milestones toward that goal. However, the accession talks are progressing rather slowly and Turkey still seems to be far away from full membership. The authors argue that obstacles delaying the process can be summarized into two primary categories: cultural differences, which are often reduced to the notion of religion, and impediments linked to the Cyprus problem. The paper will assert that without a settlement of the problem on the Mediterranean island, Turkey’s membership prospects are likely to remain uncertain. Following this line of reasoning, it will be claimed that a strategic vision of the EU can bring an end to the existing conundrum in the accession talks. Such an active move forward is in the interest of the EU, especially as Turkey becomes a more active player in the arena of international relations. Some indicators show a change in that direction, such as Lady Ashton’s comment in her capacity as High Representative: “We welcome the increasingly important role of Turkey in the region. In this context we will also look at the ways in which the EU and Turkey can enhance cooperation.” The issues that the EU tries to tackle are within the problemsolving vision of Turkey. Therefore it will be argued that if Turkey firmly establishes itself as a major regional player, it would likely play a crucial role in the success of the EU’s foreign policy, if admitted to the EU.Publication Metadata only A Precarious Relationship: The Alevi Minority, The Turkish State And The EU(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 4 Park Square, Milton Park, Abingdon Ox14 4Rn, Oxfordshire, England, 2011) Bilgili, Nazlı Çağın; Çarkoğlu, Ali; TR112265; TR125588Over the last decade, the political significance of the Alevis, the largest sectarian Muslim minority in Turkey, has notably changed. This article aims to evaluate the Alevi community's changing stance as a sectarian minority within an increasingly conservative Turkish society facing European Union (EU) membership negotiations. We first of all summarise the characteristics of the Alevi community and contextualise the changing role of the Alevi minority in Turkish politics. We focus on Alevi demands as part of the EU adjustment reforms and negotiation process, and present the official responses from the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government as well as the EU authorities.Publication Metadata only Classification of War(Oxford: Inter-disciplinary Press, 2011) YESEVİ, ÇAĞLA GÜL; ; 140841War will be defined in broader perspective. War between nation-states will be disregarded. War comprises organized psychological pressures, all kinds of restraints, physical and psychological abuses, usage of aggressive terminology, strict and dogmatic political and social thoughts. In that sense, first category of war is war against women especially in my own society, people living in Turkey including both Turks and Kurds. Women have been facing religious pressures as veiling. Some other women have demanded the freedom of veiling in the official life. They haven’t been educated as men. They have been beaten, forced to do all households. They have been forced to get married in their early ages. The arranged marriages and polygamy have been other problems of women. It was settled in the minds, myths, terminology, narratives, and customs, social, economic and political life of people. Secondly, terrorism will be investigated. The history and activities of terrorist organization, Kurdistan Workers’ Party against Turkey will be revealed. Thirdly, the state’s war against its own citizens will be explained. This war could also be defined with the war between the government and the people. Both democratic and authoritarian states through party in the power could wage war against their own citizens by creating Fear Empire. Governments could use their legislative powers against citizens who have antagonistic ideas. Economic support has been given to supporters of government. The causes of judicial case related to Ergenokon Crime organization will be stated. Allegedly, this organization comprising nationalist and secular intellectuals and members of high military command tried to form coup d’état against government of Justice and Development Party. Many people were detained, long trial process has been continuing.Publication Metadata only Bridging the Gender Gap in Turkish Politics: The actors promoting female representation(2011) Bilgili, Nazlı Çağın; 112265Gender gap is still persistent in Turkey in diff erent areas despite the fact that policies and measures pertaining to gender equality have been improved in the past couple of years. Believing in the prominence of gender gap in politics due to the authority of decision-making that belongs to the political fi gures, this article focuses on the increase –although slow- in female representation in the Turkish Parliament with a special focus on the last two general elections that were held under the infl uence of massive campaigns by women’s organizations. The last general elections held on June 12, 2011 marked an approximately 60% increase in the number of women parliamentarians which rose from 48 to 78. The article argues that three actors –civic actors, international actors namely the EU and the representatives of the Kurdish movement- have been infl uential in this increase by raising media and public attention on the topic. The campaigns that attracted great attention in the media, the emphasis of the EU progress reports on gender equality and the 40% gender quota applied among the Kurdish parliamentarians are some of the topics discussed with regard to their infl uence on the recent increase in female representation in Turkey.Publication Metadata only Alevis in Turkish Politics(2011) Bilgili, Nazlı Çağın; Çarkoğlu, Ali; 112265; 125588Publication Embargo The Failure of Democracy in Turkey a Comparative Analysis(2011) Cop, Mehmet Burak; 150508Publication Embargo Extreme Instability in Electoral System Changes: The Turkish Case(2011-05-25) Cop, Mehmet Burak; 150508This article examines the extremely volatile character of electoral system changes that took place in Turkey from the end of the Second World War up until the end of the 1990s. Motives that drove these changes were either related to intentions to prevent the undesirable repetition of the past circumstances, or to political actors’ short-term goals. Some of these changes seem to have reached their objectives while some others have not. The volatility in electoral institutions’ design was also strongly associated with the fluctuations Turkey experienced in terms of democratic consolidation. In this respect, the Turkish case may offer a variety of useful empirical material for the prospective designers of new institutions in a number of former communist countries that are likely to experience further stages of democratic transition/consolidation in the years ahead.Publication Embargo Türk Milliyetçiliğinin Evrimi(2012) Yesevi, Çağla Gül; 140841Bu çalışmada, Türk milliyetçiliğinin, Osmanlı Devleti’nde başlayan modernleşme hareketleriyle bağlantısı üzerinde durulacaktır. This study will evaluate the nationalisms of the Republican People’s Party (the RPP), the Nationalist Action Party (the NAP), and the Justice and Development Party (the JDP) of Turkey, especially during the first period of the JDP in power. Turkish nationalism has been represented by the RPP and the NAP. Nationalism of the NAP has been conservative, in that sense, the NAP supports traditional and Islamic values. The RPP has been the follower of the Kemalist principles. The Justice and Development Party (the JDP) pursues the necessities of the globalization process. It gives importance to internationalism, accession to the EU, integration with the global markets. Also, the JDP gives importance to Islamism and traditional values. Highlighting on some foreign policy issues as Iraq and Cyprus, changing attitudes of Turkish political parties will be explained. This study investigates different party discourses on those issues and tries to consider and evaluate Turkish nationalism of that era.
