Publication Agent-Based Modelling of Interstellar Contacts Using Rumour Spread Models(Cambridge University Press, 2020) Uyar, Tevfik; Özel, Mehmet EminSome stochastic model of rumours asserts that even an advanced communication network does not guarantee every agent hears certain news because they predict that rumour spreaders convert to stifflers when contacted with an informed agent. In this study, we adapted two rumour spread models to interstellar communication by developing an agent-based model (ABM) for exploring the issue more rigorously. We enhanced the spread models by adding two additional parameters called conversion probability and stop-criterion, which represent the eagerness and persistency of civilizations to establish new contacts. Results of the ABM under several settings suggest that limited SETI searches lead to undiscovered civilizations. Earth may be one of these undiscovered civilizations although an advanced communication network might already be set up. Hence, we speculate that rumour spread models can propose another solution to Fermi's Paradox.Publication Are Time Management and Cyberloafing Related? Investigating Employees’ Attitudes(2020) Ötken, A. Begüm; Bayram, Ayhan; Göl Beşer, Senem; KAYA, ÇİĞDEM; 246912; 108211; 18140Time is a critical commodity both for individuals and companies because it is not possible to substitute or purchase it. The concept of time management, therefore, attracted the attention of both academicians and practitioners. Companies started to question behaviour of employees using their companies’ Internet access for non-work-related purposes during work hours. These activities constitute an unproductive use of time and detract employees from completing their work demands. In this framework, the purpose of this study is to understand whether time management and cyberloafing are related. Data were collected from 300 employees working in Istanbul, Turkey. Results show that the time wasters dimension negatively explained the variance in serious cyberloafing. Results also show that time planning and time attitude dimensions positively explained the variance in minor cyberloafing. Understanding the relationship between time management and cyberloafing provides fruitful results for companies and individuals in terms of productivity and achieving goals at work.Publication Economic Growth: Is it Green or not? An Application on OECD(2021) Akarsu, Gülsüm; GÜMÜŞOĞLU, NEBİLE KORUCU; 53145; 115505For climate change mitigation and considering other environmental impacts of traditional energy sources, countries have started to implement energy policies in favor of renewable energy sources. In this way, without any detrimental effect on economic growth, countries can decrease their fossil fuel consumption. However, there is a debate about the direction of causality between renewable energy consumption and economic growth as for the total energy-growth nexus. Moreover, in the literature, the studies focus only on the total or specific type of renewable energy consumption while analyzing the direction of causality. From this point of view, there is a gap in the literature in such a way that there is a need for a comprehensive analysis which compares the existence and direction of causality for different types of renewable energy sources and technologies. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to investigate renewable energy consumption and growth nexus. By using panel data on renewable electricity generation for OECD countries over the years from 2000 to 2016, the causality is tested for different technologies. Moreover, as the economic growth may not correctly measure the overall economic well-being, another measure for welfare is used. Therefore, the main motivation of this study is to include welfare in renewable energy and growth nexus in which different type of technologies for renewable energy are considered. The results for both economic growth and welfare measure show that the existence and directi highly differs among the different technologies. Therefore, technology specific policies should be implemented in order to stimulate the renewable energy investments and consumption.Publication A Novel Multistage CAD System for Breast Cancer Diagnosis(Springer London Ltd., 2023) Karacan, Kübra; UYAR, TEVFİK; Tunga, Burcu; Tunga, M. AlperComputer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems are widely used to diagnose breast cancer using mammography screening. In this research, we proposed a new multistage CAD system based on image decomposition with High-Dimensional Model Representation (HDMR) which is a divide-and-conquer algorithm. We used digital mammograms from Digital Database for Screening Mammography as dataset. We neglected BIRADS classification and used a brand-new clustering based on HDMR constant and breast size. To find the best performance of HDMR-based CAD system, we compared different pre-processing settings such as contrast enhancement with CLAHE and HDMR, feature extraction with HDMR, feature scaling, dimension reduction with Linear Discriminant Analysis. We used several Machine Learning algorithms and measured the performance of proposed system for normal-benign-malign classification, cancer detection, mass detection and found that the proposed system achieves 66%, 71% and 87% accuracy, respectively. We were able to achieve 92% accuracy, 100% sensitivity and 91% specificity in specific clusters. These results are comparable with deep learning-based methods although we simplified the pipeline and used brand-new HDMR-based processes.Publication Perceptions and Expectations of International and Ethnically Diverse Students in the Context of Diversity Management Policy Document in a Turkish Foundation University(Türk Kooperatifçilik Kurumu, 2023) Bataklar, Sinan; DEVECİYAN, MERİ TAKSİThe aim of this study is to analyse the effects of having policy documents regarding diversity management on students’ perceptions in higher education context. The study was carried out with 25 international students and students with different ethnic backgrounds who have been studying in various undergraduate and associate degree programs of a Turkish foundation university. The data were gathered via open-ended questions and phenomenology method. The data were applied using the qualitative content analysis approach. Based on the analysis of the data, noticeable themes have been reached regarding the students’ perceptions of the university’s diversity management policies and the academic satisfaction they get in the provided learning atmosphere during their time on and off campus. The themes and their sub-themes are as follows: The theme “the presence of the university to provide an inclusive educational atmosphere in the availability of students from different countries and ethnic backgrounds” include the significance of policy documents of the higher education institution, the necessity of an international campus and awareness raising and networking events, the theme “expectations to increase satisfaction about academic processes” includes the sub-themes of academic material support, learn by doing (allocation of more time for internship), more interaction with the academic staff, qualifications of the academic staff and sensitivity to individual learner types and learner backgrounds, the theme “expectations to create an international campus with a successful diversity management among students” includes attracting more students from different regions of the world, communication frameworks among students and graduates, high frequency of extra-curricular activities.Publication Understanding the Management and Leadership Culture of the Innovative Automotive Companies(Bandırma Onyedi Eylül Üniversitesi İ.İ.B.F., 2020) OKATAN, KAĞANManagement and leadership styles and approaches have always been important for business and management literature. The dominance of management and leadership on companies’ success or failure has been highlighted and investigated by important amount of studies in existing literature. This study investigates the management and leadership culture type of sample innovative companies from automotive industry by applying ‘competing values framework assessment’ . This study also identifies the culture types of other dimensions of organizational culture and provides a consolidated view. The results demonstrated the dominance of market culture which fosters competition among the members of the organization and success oriented. On the other hand, hierarchy culture has considerable existence in the ‘management of employees’ dimension of the organizational culture. All four culture types’ existence levels are also represented in the study for all dimensions of organizational culture.Publication Women’s Employment in Turkey’s ICT Sector: An Examination From a Social Inclusion Perspective(IGI Global, 2022) GÖRKEY, SELDAWomen constitute one of the risk groups vulnerable to poverty; therefore, enabling their participation in the labor force is crucial to promoting social inclusion in a society. Employment in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector is widely known for being male-dominated, and recently women’s participation has become an important subject. This chapter aims to examine women’s employment in Turkey’s ICT sector from 2009 to 2016, from a social inclusion perspective, by using various indicators. Comparisons with European Union (EU) countries provide perspective on tracking the progress of employment structure and education choices for ICT by gender. All indicators signify the existence of a gender gap resulting in low rates of inclusion of women in Turkey’s ICT employment during the period. Examination of the reasons leads to making some policy recommendations to promote social inclusion of women in Turkey’s ICT employment. © 2022 by IGI Global. All rights reserved.
