Abstract

The relationship between visual arts and literature has brought different approaches along with for ages. The widespread usage fields of visual arts, their uses in independent fields such as literature, cinema and advertisement, have brought different methods along with in order to analyse these masterpieces. The place of masterpieces in different semiotic systems such as literature and cinema has enlightended the arguments about painting and poetry that has taken place for a long time. The concept of intertextuality when undertaken with theoretical approaches, goes beyond the description of the text as a closed and implicit structure and it points out that the text is in a constant dealing with the texts coming before and after the text itself. The concept of intertextuality which can not be restricted with only written texts, by means of intertextual methods, it refers not only written texts but also various kinds of unwritten texts and includes those unwritten texts into written texts. In this context, it is the case that visual arts are used both in wrtitten texts such as literature and unwritten texts such as cinema and advertisement as well. The concept of ekphrasis which is a rhetorical device, had been brought into Western Literature by the twentieth century critics. Ekphrasis which is described as the ?verbal description of a visual work of art? has goes beyond its mere function as a description of visual arts, comes about as a marker method in analyzing the visual arts masterpieces that are used in literature and cinema and in creating meaning. In this work, after making a comprehensive analysis of ekphrasis, besides examples of Romantic Period, Victorian Period and Modern Period ekphrastic poetry, the novel and the movie of Girl With A Pearl Earring, in which Vermeer art is used and which can be accepted as ekphrastic examples, are being analysed in terms of enlightening the use of ekphrasis in novel and cinema.
