Abstract

Throughout history, in all periods and civilizations, there has been a need for places in which the exchange of good were to be made. ıt is observed that during the period up to 20th Century, the most basic characteristic of shopping places in cities is "integration with the urban structure". Starting with agoras in the Antique period then leaving their places to covered bazaars in the Ottoman period and then to public squares and streets in Middle Age cities, today's shopping centers were formed as arcades and big shops in the 19th century. In those places, the shopping area is stuated and integrated with in the city centre and constitutes a multi-functional public and communication place. The transformation of from processing, material, structure, colour and design is explained in the functional scheme of shopping centers during the historical development process..
