Publication Double Skin Facade Assessment by Fuzzy AHP and Comparison with AHP(Taylor & Francis Ltd., 2021) BOSTANCIOĞLU, ESRAA double-skin facade (DSF) has been widely used in recent years for its thermal and aesthetic properties. DSFs can also control wind pressure, manage natural ventilation and provide noise insulation. This study aims at providing an assessment of DSF to building designers and builders with their selection of facade systems. The decisions taken on the selection of facade systems are complicated ones based on multiple criteria. A decision must be taken only after many criteria are evaluated. While certain criteria such as heat insulation, noise insulation, and cost can be easily quantified, it is difficult to measure subjective criteria such as aesthetics. Therefore, the study aims at reflecting the experience of professionals who have applied such facade systems, to be able to evaluate all assessment criteria and facade systems. Architects or engineers working in the construction sector assessed criteria and DSF alternatives by replying to a questionnaire. Fuzzy set theory aids in measuring the ambiguity of concepts that are associated with human being's subjective judgment. Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) has been applied to many assessment problems. It is used for the assessment of DSF in this study. AHP was used for the assessment of DSF in our previous study. The results of our previous study are also compared with the results of this study and findings are presented.Publication Effect of Insulation Thickness on Energy Consumption for Different Shaped Buildings(Springer Nature, 2021) BOSTANCIOĞLU, ESRAControl and management of energy consumption are becoming more and more important due to the rapid depletion of fossil energy resources and the increased environmental problems caused by them. A large amount of energy is consumed in the buildings. Therefore, priority is given to applications that reduce the amount of energy consumed during the utilization phase of buildings. Decisions regarding building shape and insulation thickness have a considerable effect on building energy costs. Therefore, this study will analyze the effect of insulation thickness on the energy consumption of residential buildings that have different shapes. The building shape is evaluated with an external envelope area to the building’s gross volume (A/V) ratio and external wall area/floor area (EWA/FA) ratio. 4 building shapes with different external wall area are selected for this study. The maximum and minimum energy costs of each building shapes are calculated based on 14 different envelopes and 8 different orientation alternatives taking into consideration the solar gain. The effects of insulation thicknesses on energy costs for different shaped buildings are determined by comparing energy costs. As opposed to established design process which takes the designer at the center, independent participatory approach takes the designer to the center and currently has a humanist understanding. It is aimed to prevent individuals from interfering with the designs after the project is implemented by taking more care of human needs. Collaborative design approach developed to minimize interventions in the physical environment is an active process guided by space users. In addition, participatory methods developed to understand the needs of users are effective in making the process democratic and sustaining projects. In this study, Istanbul Kultur University Akpaz Cafeteria was aimed to be redesigned with a participatory approach using the daily life experiences of users. Although it is university dining hall area, Akpaz Cafeteria is preferred for various purposes other than dining area by the users who have many different expectation, Akpaz Cafeteria is selected as an example for this study. The observations made to analyze the instant behavior of the users and the semi-structured interview questions directed to reveal the implicit expectations and experiences of the students constituted the participatory design methods used in the study.
