Publication A Pandemic Experience of Remote Working: Reflections on Emotions(Peterlang, 2021) Peksatıcı Yanıkoğlu, Özge; Ergun, Hande Sinem; Samur Teraman; Seray Begüm; 223341; 173087; 31285Covid-19 pandemic employs spectacular and specific characteristics that are unique only to this period. First of all, remote working during Covid-19 is enforced. In other words, it is not a choice but rather an obligation to work remotely. In addition, mobility and socialization are limited under pandemic circumstances. Moreover, companies and employees had to switch remote working suddenly, and therefore they were unprepared for this sudden change (Waizenegger, McKenna, Cai, & Bendz, 2020). Before the pandemic, remote working could have been perceived as a “positive” option that provides more freedom and flexibility to the employees, employers, and scholars in the field. However, Covid-19’s enforced remote working unraveled the efficiencies of our working assumptions and challenged them. In fact, it can be argued that “the meaning of work” has also changed during the pandemic. In order to maintain the “business as usual”, it is on the shoulders of the knowledge workers to quickly adapt to the sudden merge of the living and working environment and the new ways of digital interacting.Publication Agent-Based Modelling of Interstellar Contacts Using Rumour Spread Models(Cambridge University Press, 2020) Uyar, Tevfik; Özel, Mehmet EminSome stochastic model of rumours asserts that even an advanced communication network does not guarantee every agent hears certain news because they predict that rumour spreaders convert to stifflers when contacted with an informed agent. In this study, we adapted two rumour spread models to interstellar communication by developing an agent-based model (ABM) for exploring the issue more rigorously. We enhanced the spread models by adding two additional parameters called conversion probability and stop-criterion, which represent the eagerness and persistency of civilizations to establish new contacts. Results of the ABM under several settings suggest that limited SETI searches lead to undiscovered civilizations. Earth may be one of these undiscovered civilizations although an advanced communication network might already be set up. Hence, we speculate that rumour spread models can propose another solution to Fermi's Paradox.Publication Analysis of Factors Affecting the Capital Adequacy Ratio in the Turkish Banking Sector(Springer Science and Business Media B.V., 2022) KÖTEN, AYŞEGÜL BERRAKThe banking sector performs financial intermediation transactions in accordance with its basic function. Factors such as the diversification of financial products and rapid change in technology cause changes in the structure of the banking sector while also revealing the different types of risks. With regard to bank risk and profitability management, it is vital that capital structures are at such a level as to meet the risks. The adequacy and strength of the capital structures in banks are the basic conditions for the functioning of the system and the establishment of trust. Keeping this ratio at certain levels and ensuring continuity in this value is very important for banks to work effectively and efficiently. The study aims to determine the long-term relationships of factors affecting the capital adequacy ratio (CAR) with the help of Westerlund and Edgerton (2007) LM Bootstrap panel cointegration test for commercial (deposit), development and investment and Islamic banking groups with the annual data for the 2010–2020 period in Turkish banking sector. As a result of the analysis of the three bank groups, it was determined that the total assets, liquidity adequacy ratio, and equity/total risk-weighted item ratios positively affected the capital adequacy ratio, and the market risk and nonperforming loan (NPL)/total cash loan ratios were statistically significantly affected. Furthermore, the coefficiency of the error correction term was negative and statistically significant, and the error correction mechanism was seen to be working. The most effective variable on capital adequacy was seen as the liquidity adequacy ratio. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.Publication Analysis of the Lingering Effects of COVID-19 on Distance Education(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2023) KOCAÇINAR, BÜŞRA; QARIZADA, NASIBULLAH; DİKKAYA, CİHAN; AZGUN, EMİRHAN; ELİF, YILDIRIM; AKBULUT, FATMA PATLAREducation has been severely impacted by the spread of the COVID-19 virus. In order to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus and maintain education in the current climate, governments have compelled the public to adopt online platforms. Consequently, this decision has affected numerous lives in various ways. To investigate the impact of COVID-19 on students’ education, we amassed a dataset consisting of 10,000 tweets. The motivations of the study are; (i) to analyze the positive, negative, and neutral effects of COVID-19 on education; (ii) to analyze the opinions of stakeholders in their tweets about the transition from formal education to e-learning; (iii) to analyze people’s feelings and reactions to these changes; and (iv) to analyze the effects of different training methods on different groups. We constructed emotion recognition models utilizing shallow and deep techniques, including Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), Long-short Term Memory (LSTM), Random Forest (RF), Naive Bayes (NB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Logical Regression (LR). RF algorithms with a bag-of-words model outperformed with over 80% accuracy in recognizing emotions.Publication Analytic Functions With Conic Domains Associated With Certain Generalized q-integral Operator(Korean Mathematical Society, 2023) Ahuja, Om P.; ÇETİNKAYA, ASENA; Jain, Naveen KumarIn this paper, we define a new subclass of k-uniformly starlike functions of order-gamma (0 <= gamma < 1) by using certain generalized q integral operator. We explore geometric interpretation of the functions in this class by connecting it with conic domains. We also investigate q sufficient coefficient condition, q-Fekete-Szego inequalities, q-Bieberbach De Branges type coefficient estimates and radius problem for functions in this class. We conclude this paper by introducing an analogous subclass of k-uniformly convex functions of order-gamma by using the generalized q-integral operator. We omit the results for this new class because they can be directly translated from the corresponding results of our main class.Publication An Analytical Approach to Machine Layout Design at a High-Pressure Die Casting Manufacturer(Springer-Verlag Singapore Pte Ltd., 2022) EMİR, OĞUZ; AKTİN, AYŞE TÜLİNSahin Metal was founded in 1975 on a 7500 m(2) area in.Istanbul to supply high-pressure aluminum casting parts to a variety of industries, especially automotive manufacturers. 64 different products are produced with various routings through 14 workstations in the plant. Being a Tier 2 company, these products are then sent to Tier 1 firms and finally reach the leading vehicle manufacturers. Nowadays, increasing competition, changing customer demands, and quality targets bring the necessity of restructuring internal processes. In this regard, Sahin Metal plans to rearrange the existing machine layout to minimize the distance traveled between departments by taking into account the material flow. This study aims to determine an efficient machine layout design by implementing analytical approaches. The study is started by visiting the production facility and meeting with the company's engineers to determine the project roadmap. Following that, the data collection process is initiated, and ABC analysis is performed to define product classes. After this identification, two approaches are utilized simultaneously. The Hollier method is employed to find a logical machine arrangement. In addition, a mathematical model based on the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) is developed to obtain the optimum machine layout. The developed integer nonlinear model is solved by CONOPT using GAMS software under various scenarios. Finally, these results are compared with the existing system, and a convenient layout design is proposed to the company.Publication The Applicability of Regression Analysis and Artificial Neural Networks to the Prediction Process of Consistency and Compaction Properties of High Plastic Clays(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2021) Akbay Arama, Zülal; GENÇDAL, HAZAL BERRAK; Nuray, Said Enes; Yücel, MeldaIn all kinds of site investigation reports prepared to acquire the current situation of the project site, it is a common fact to perform the consistency tests which are specialized as Atterberg limit tests. Consistency can be defined as an important term, especially for fine-grained soils, to appoint the current state of the water content of soil formation in the field. Based on the ease and cost-effectiveness of the Atterberg tests, it has become a traditional solution to determine the fundamental design properties such as the rigidity and strength of the soil formation with the use of empirical approaches that are developed according to them. In this context, “compaction” can be an interesting term to investigate the appropriateness of determination of special characteristics of the phenomenon such as the optimum water content and the maximum dry unit weight with the development of a new perspective based on a simplest experimental process formed with only the evaluation of water content. Because it is a complicated and time-consuming process to apply the compaction test beginning of the sample preparation step to the ultimate evaluation step. Hence, in this paper, an integrated study is performed for highly plastic clays to acquire the consistency and the compaction properties together with a direct relationship. A huge database was prepared according to the data’s given in the well-accepted literature sources by the transmission of liquid limit and plastic limit test results conducted for only the high plastic clays. Besides, simple equations are tried to be obtained to calculate the plasticity index and approximations are proposed to find the maximum dry unit weight and the optimum water content of the soil, respectively. As a result, the applicability of both the regression analysis and the artificial neural network studies to the attainment process of both consistency characteristics and compaction problem were compared with each other to procure a reliable determination process. © 2021, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.Publication Arteriovenous Fistula Self-Care Behaviors in Patients Receiving Hemodialysis Treatment: Association With Health Literacy and Self-Care Agency(Sage Publications Ltd., 2022) Bülbül, Elif; Ayvaz, Meryem Yıldız; Yeni, Tuğba; TÜREN, SEVDA; Efil, SevdaBackground: Arteriovenous fistula-related self-care behaviors, self-care agency and health literacy are important for vascular access patency, which is vital in the continuation of hemodialysis treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine the arteriovenous fistula-related self-care behaviors of patients receiving chronic hemodialysis treatment and the relationship between these behaviors and their health literacy and self-care agency levels. Methods: In this descriptive correlational study, the data were collected from 216 chronic hemodialysis patients. Results: The rate of the patients who had good self-care behaviors levels was 83.96%. The sociodemographic variables that were significantly related to AVF-related self-care behaviors were education, employment status and age. It was found that the patients who had had AVF for a longer time had better self-care behaviors regarding their management of symptoms and findings (p < 0.05). As the self-care agency of the patients (r = 0.612, p < 0.001) and their health literacy (r = 0.421, p < 0.001) increased, their AVF-related self-care behaviors also increased. Conclusion: Age, education status, health literacy and self-care agency were identified to affect AVF-related self-care behaviors.Publication Assessment of Seismic Demand and Damping of a Reinforced Concrete Building After CFRP Jacketing of Columns(Techno-Press, 2022) KOÇAK, PINAR İNCİ; Göksu, Çağier; Töre, Erkan; Binbir, Ergun; Ateş, Ali Osman; İlki, AlperWhile the lateral confinement provided by an FRP jacket to a concrete column is passive in nature, confinement is activated when the concrete expands due to additional compression stresses or significant shear deformations. This characteristic of FRP jacketing theoretically leads to similar initial stiffness properties of FRP retrofitted buildings as the buildings without retrofit. In the current study, to validate this theoretical assumption, the initial stiffness characteristics, and thus, the potential seismic demands were investigated through forced vibration tests on two identical full-scale substandard reinforced concrete buildings with or without FRP retrofit. Power spectral density functions obtained using the acceleration response data captured through forced vibration tests were used to estimate the modal characteristics of these buildings. The test results clearly showed that the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of the buildings are quite similar. Since the seismic demand is controlled by the fundamental vibration modes, it is confirmed using vibration-based full-scale tests that the seismic demands of RC buildings remain unchanged after CFRP jacketing of columns. Furthermore, the damping characteristics were also found similar for both structures.Publication Assessment of the Correlation Between Weight Status and the Frequency of Dietician Interviews in Sleeve Gastrectomy Patients(Springer, 2021) BATAR, NAZLI; SEVDİN, SEZEN; Güçlü, Duygu; KERMEN, SEDAPurpose The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the weight status of sleeve gastrectomy patients during the first two postoperative years and the frequency of dietician interviews. Materials and Methods This was a retrospective cross-sectional study, and the subjects were patients who had surgery at a special obesity clinic, Bariatriklab, in Istanbul, Turkey, between February 01, 2014, and February 01, 2018.The mean age +/- standard deviation of the participants was 38.8 +/- 11.9 years. The mean body mass index (BMI) +/- standard deviation was 44.2 +/- 6.1 kg/m(2)preoperatively. The preoperative (pre-op) and 12-, 18-, and 24-month postoperative (post-op) weights and the frequency of interviews with dieticians for 2 years after the operation were collected, and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS ver. 23.0. Results A total of 247 laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) patients, 161 women (65.2%) and 86 men (34.8%), were evaluated in this study. As the frequency of dietician interviews increased in the first year, the amount of excess weight loss (EWL) increased in the second year (p < 0.01). In addition, as the frequency of dietician interviews increased in the second year, the amount of EWL in the second year decreased (p < 0.01). The frequency of dietician counseling among participants who did not experience weight loss between 12 and 24 months was significantly higher than that among those who experienced weight loss (p < 0.05). Conclusion It should not be forgotten that bariatric surgery requires teamwork, and patients should be cared for with an interdisciplinary approach. Dieticians play an important role in changing nutritional habits and making them sustainable.Publication BABA Pre-Treatment Before Drought Stress Revealed Tolerance Related Proteomic Alterations in Rice(Wiley, 2022) YALÇIN, HM; MAYTALMAN, S.; İHVAN, YF; GÜMÜŞ, TAMER; MERİÇ, SİNAN; AYAN, ALP; ATAK, ÇİMENPublication Ben, Sen ve Titius(Yeditepe Üniversitesi adına Prof. Sultan Tahmazoğlu Üzeltürk, 2021) ÖZ, MAYA TURGUTJustinianus’un Digesta’sında fragmentumları alıntılanan klasik dönemin büyük hu-kukçularından biri de Celsus’tur. Celsus hukuk tarihinde “impossibilium nulla obligatio est” ilkesini ortaya atan kişidir. Publication Biotic Stress-Tolerant Plants Through Small Rna Technology(Elsevier, 2020) ÇELİK, ÖZGE; MERİÇ, SİNAN; AYAN, ALP; ATAK, ÇİMENWith an increasing population around the world, the rapid loss of agricultural fields shows us the urgent importance of finding solutions to develop agricultural productivity. Besides industrialization, several effectors such as abiotic and biotic factors cause losses in crop productivity. Biotic factors threaten production and transportation of products worldwide. Bacteria, fungi, viruses, and oomycetes cause losses both pre- and postharvest. It is crucial to improve biotic stress-tolerant plants to overcome reduction in plant productivity. For many years, researchers focused on understanding plant defense mechanisms. Anatomical, physiological, and molecular adaptive mechanisms were investigated for several plant species. Besides the innate immunity mechanisms, including cross-talk, among the phytohormones to manage appropriate defense mechanisms against pathogens, new generation strategies in crop improvements are widely used in plant biotechnology. Although conventional breeding has importance in breeding new varieties, new technologies increase the possibility of success. Recently, new combinations of technologies have been proven effective to develop new cultivars. Small RNA technology is one of the developing crop improvement technologies relying on regulating specific genes together with their sequence identity. In this chapter, we focus on the small RNA technologies used in improvement of biotic stress-tolerant plants.Publication Blood Serum-Infrared Spectra-Based Chemometric Models for Auxiliary Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder(Elsevier, 2021) ILDIZ, GÜLCE ÖĞRÜÇ; Bayarı, Sevgi; Yorguner, Neşe; Fausto, RuiThis chapter focuses on the use of chemometric models developed from infrared (IR) spectroscopic data of blood serum as an auxiliary tool for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis. Publication Comparative Evaluation of Different Classification Techniques for Masquerade Attack Detection(Inderscience Enterprises Ltd., 2020) Elmasry, Wisam; AKBULUT, AKHAN; Zaim, Abdul HalimMasquerade detection is a special type of intrusion detection problem. Effective and early intrusion detection is a crucial basis for computer security. Although of considerable work has been focused on masquerade detection for more than a decade, achieving a high level of accuracy and a comparatively low degree of false alarm rate is still a big challenge. In this paper, we present an extensive empirical study in the area of user behaviour profiling-based masquerade detection using six of different existed machine learning methods in Azure Machine Learning (AML) studio. In order to surpass previous studies on this subject, we used four free and publicly available datasets with seven data configurations are implemented from them. Moreover, eight well-known masquerade detection evaluation metrics are used to assess methods performance against each data configuration. Finally, intensive quantitative and ROC curves analyses of results are provided at the end of this paper.Publication A Comparative Sectoral Analysis of Industry 4.0 Readiness Levels of Turkish SMEs(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2021) EMİR, OĞUZ; GERGİN, ZEYNEP; YÜKSEKTEPE, FADİME ÜNEY; Dündar, Uğurcan; Gençyılmaz, Güneş M.; Çavdarlı, Ali IhsanThe concept of Industry 4.0 brings new standards and has an essential impact on business models, work organizations, and processes. Nowadays, companies are enforced to perform such challenges as meeting personal customer requests, flexibility, responsiveness, customer-oriented solutions, and delivering continuous value to survive in the competitive market. The most innovative companies are resourceful to integrate new digital tools into their business models by following initial trends. For Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs), adopting these new industrial challenges, and responding to them quickly is vital when it is considered that they have 99.8% of the enterprise share of Turkey. To do so, an intensive effort is needed to integrate Industry 4.0 applications within the enterprises. It has been suggested in the literature that manufacturing organizations should begin with understanding their current level of maturity by defining their strengths and weaknesses. Further, a significant effort is required with the collaboration of government, academia, and industry leaders to guide enterprises for improving their capabilities in an objective and standardized manner. Despite the diversity of approaches directed to Industry 4.0 concepts, it is not easy to find a study that measures how the manufacturing sector is adopting Industry 4.0 and compares manufacturing sectors with each other. To this end, broad research is initiated in March 2018 to identify the current situation of SMEs in Turkey. In this paper, it is intended to extend the study by providing a comparative sector analysis for manufacturing SMEs in Turkey in terms of Industry 4.0 transformation. Possible action plan suggestions are presented according to the results obtained at the end of the paper. © 2021, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.Publication Comparing the Cost of Fandom in European Football(Taylor and Francis, 2022) ÖZAYDIN, SELÇUK; TINAZ, CEMUndoubtedly, fans are an essential factor of success for football clubs due to their potential to generate income and contribute to the home-field advantage. So far, the literature has focused on fans’ contribution to their teams; however, the cost of being a fan has not been investigated thoroughly. The increasing commercialization of football has emphasized football consumption as a commodity, which improved the overall quality of the produced output. A fan has to pay more than the previous year to show their affiliation to their beloved team every year. Especially with the global pandemic and its adverse effects on disposable income and employment, being a fan will be costlier more than ever. This chapter examines the cost of being a football fan for selected teams from the Big 5 leagues of Europe, Portuguese Primeira Liga and the Turkish Super League. We examine the cost, both in absolute terms and as a percentage of GDP per capita and minimum wage and identify the fan-friendly ones among Europe’s top teams in terms of cost. © 2022 selection and editorial matter, Danielle Sarver Coombs and Anne C.
