Abstract

Maya Art Gallery is an historical example for the art galleries in Turkey which also played an important role in the Turkish art of the 1950?s. In a period without the pressure of market conditions it has led up the profession of art gallery in Turkey as one of the earliest of all. While there were only limited intellectual and cultural interest for art in the society of this era Maya has worked with an amateur spirit to offer the artists and their art to public both intellectually and economically. After the millennium Istanbul has become more and more a part of the international art milieu. Because of that art galleries now have to manage their policies through international conditions. There are international art fairs like Contemporary Istanbul in the city where political and economic indicatives become more important in the art market. Under these recent conditions Turkish art galleries have to remember their cultural missions with reference to their historical pioneer: Maya.
