Abstract

In comparison to past, in the last 30 years period, the concepts of competition and competitiveness became more crucial into global economic system and centered into application based research studies related to modern economic theories and foreign trade. The concept of competitiveness is considered at three different levels which are firm, industry and national. The methodology of Revealed Comparative Advantage which is developed by Balassa and improved with the efforts of Vollrath is the one of the most effective devices used to measure the competitiveness of an industry or group of industries. Packaging industry latterly is one of the fast growing industries of the Turkey and the corrugated packaging sector is the one of the most important part of Turkish packaging industry. This research investigates the competitiveness of Turkish corrugated packaging sector according to Revealed Comparative Advantage for the period of 2000 to 2011. In this research other efficient measuring methods were also used to support the results of the application. According to results of this study, Turkish corrugated packaging sector has a revealed comparative advantage and strong competitiveness based on the foreign trade values and other figures between the years of 2000-2011. This research also exposed that the competitiveness level of Turkish corrugated packaging sector has an increasing momentum which seems to improve its competitiveness to a better position in short term period.
