Abstract

He term “housing” corresponds to the concepts of shelter, house, nest as a spatial reaction to humankind’s existence in the world; it defines a specialized and personalized type of space that is expected to foster the users’ sense of belonging, meet their psychological and sociological expectations, and is expected to multiply eventually, becoming a cultural asset.. Unfortunately, a brief examination of the current housing projects reveals the severity of the situation which far exceeds the desired “housing”; the user needs, in some way, are neglected and instead, the issues that serve for the market conditions most - such as rent, luxury, and status - are being featured for publicity. As the meaning and sentimental value of the house is being marginalized, the interiors are ignored and life is compressed into pieces of land with a market value of [?]+ 1. Based on this problem, “[?]+1 Toprak Atölye” workshop series is held with the aim of opening up housing projects and ignored interiors for discussion, and bringing a critical perspective to the subject. “[?] + 1 Toprak Atölye” was primarily carried out within the context of Istanbul under the scope of 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial, with a collective production mentality in mind. Istanbul constitutes the prime focus and reference point to the very first workshop of this sequence; however, to disrupt the monotony of investigating the issue at Istanbul scale and context only, the workshop evolved into a series to be held in various cities and discussed in different contexts in order. Correspondingly, “[?] + 1 Toprak Atölye 2” was held in the context of Trabzon city hosted by Karadeniz Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, Interior Architecture Department. The structure and the process of this workshop were designed in accordance with the Trabzon context and the related outcome of it was discussed in comparison to the earlier results and experiences.
