Tekirdağ'da geleneksel ahşap konutların malzeme sorunları ve koruma yöntemleri üzerine bir metodoloji çalışması: Tekirdağ'dan bir konut örneği

Abstract

Tekirdağ, as one of the cities that Thracian traditional urban fabric is still preserved, has always had a house based settlement style throughout its historical development process. Although, the majority of the traditional houses in this region are timber, masonry houses are also widespread the region. Heights of the houses, and architectural features are common in most of the houses, respectful to their enviroments and others, side by side and in a unity. As a result of industrialization in the begining of 19th century, and the usage of new materials by time, timber became unfavourable as a construction material. Modern problems such as global warming, resource shortage and consumption, combined with growing ecological consciousness, helped timber to restore its importance. Its lifetime, sustainability, being economical in dense wooden resource areas, possibility to construct wide (intel/beam) spans and increased fire resistance through contemporary new technologies, made timber favourable again as a construction material. Purpose of this thesis, titled as "a methodological study on the material problems of traditional timber houses in tekirdağ and on their preservation methods: a sample house from Tekirdağ", is studying the current conditions of the traditional timber buildings in Tekirdağ, preparing a deterioration map, based on the assessments made on the sample building, introducing the conditions of timber buildings, and put forth a reference for further studies, in order to contribute to conservation of the traditional buildings for future generations. Therefore, this study also contributes to the development of methodologies, that provides sustainability of the traditional house examples of Tekirdağ, which are in a rapid deterioration. For this purpose, one of the very typical examples of traditional wooden twin houses at street numbers 15 and 17 in Eski Bedesten Street in Ertuğrul Mahallesi, which are located in Tekirdağ's desigrated historic site, are chosen as case studies. Architectural features, construction methods, material usage, alterations, structural and material deteriorations, causes of material deteriorations and type are planned to be studied. Through developing conservation proposals methods for the problems of timber houses, it is aimed basic to put forth for conservation of other traditional timber buildings.
