The sociological dimension of the phenomenon of old age involves the position of the old aged in the given system and other factors such as socioeconomic and sociocultural conditions that determine this position; and these factors constitute the reflection of the current policies. From this point of view, an evaluation concerning the phenomenon of old age or the current position of the old aged in Turkey, where lives a society with traditional roots cannot be considered independent from the modernisation process and the distinctive sociocultural and socioeconomic conditions of this process. The position concerning the old aged is thought to be shifting to a new ‘other’ in contemporary societies, especially in the western countries. In this respect, it is possible to predict that this ‘othering’ process will eventually start in traditional societies as well. The reflection of this process in cinema seems interesting in terms of representations of the phenomenon of old age in cinema. In this study, the representations of the phenomenon of old age will be examined in terms of socio-political and sociocultural reflections of the modernisation process. In this regard, several variables will be questioned, such as how the phenomenon of old age is represented in the Turkish cinema after 1990; whether this representation contributes to building a new ‘other’; whether an alternative representation is presented instead of reproducing the prevailing perception of old age. The study will be based on the qualitative content analysis of the selected films that will be analysed in terms of above mentioned questions and will be interpreted with a critical point of view through a sociological perspective.Publication Open Access 360 Derece Panoramik Görüntü Veren Sanal Müzelerin Grafik Tasarım Açısından İncelenmesi(The Turkish Online Journal of Design Art and Communication, 2015-10) Kalıncı, ElifThis research is a descriptive study and based on scanning model. The novel was adapted for the cinema the same year and directed by John Ford. Proving welcome in cinema circles and taking its place as a master work in film history, it was one of the few films with radical political connotations hitherto produced by Hollywood. Nevertheless, this cinematic version of the Great Depression narrative has not escaped criticisms, which have been aimed chiefly at aspects of its content that diverge from its parent work. Compared with the novel, the film has been considered more conservative and optimistic, on the grounds that, although the novel emphasizes the class conflict and portrays the Joads as only one of the many suffering families, the film exerts a redundant focus on the family and commends family values: divergences considered to be supported by the visual style of the film. In this article, while recalling Ford’s The Grapes of Wrath, I revisit the above-mentioned criticisms and reassess them in relation to the parenting novel. In doing so, this article also aims to evoke the ongoing economic recession that influences the masses all over the world and the recurrent, unchanging and inevitable outcomes that such crises of capitalism bring for its victims.Publication Open Access A Free Insight About Using Smartness Law In Internal And External Architecture(The Turkish Online Journal of Design Art and Communication, 2016-04) Ghaleh Golab, Maryam; Dabagh, Amir MasoudIn every science we confront with several branches and trends. Also it has not been taken as a professional tool for years. Especially after Griffth’s approaches on camera movements, camera angles, framing techniques such as medium shot or close-up. The quality level of filmmaking between amateurs and professionals has been highly spread. Today, by the help of new technologies these two fields got closer. Now we can make near-professional films by using amateur equipments; we can edit them at our home computer, we can even prepare some music at home by using the help of some softwares. Also we can freely share it by using websites such as Youtube, Vimeo or some others. So for amateurs its not only easy and cheap to produce a film but also it is easy and cheap to distribute it. The number of amateur movies produced today are much more then professional movies. The enormous number of amateur productions also affected the audience and created “a new way” of story telling like shaked camera movements, deficient lighting, grainy look. This way of story telling first was discomforting and disorienting for the audience, but later they got used to it. This also affected the professionals: lots of production firms started to make professional films which used ‘amateur way’ of story telling. This study intends to discuss this new way of telling a story and implications associated with this new approach. The discussion will focus on three selected professional films using this new approach, namely “District 9” (2009), “Cloverfield” (2008) and “Paranormal Activity” (2007). These films use jump-cuts, deficient lighting and grainy pictures, contrasting strongly with traditional way of story telling. Thus, the study will explore the important points of using editing applications, lighting, image composition and camera movements with their relationship to the existing cinematography, trying to find an explanation to this new perception of reality in digitalization.Publication Open Access A Study On The Decorations Of Ilkhani Era: A Case Study Of Dome Of Soltaniyeh(The Turkish Online Journal of Design Art and Communication, 2016-07) Sobouti, Hooman; Ghasemi, AliThe Mongols, in the late sixth and early seventh century AH, invaded their surrounding territories and occupied large parts of the civilized world at that time, constituting the largest contiguous empire in human history in terms of land area. One such application is the development of virtual reality, which aspires to immerse the user within the system such that they feel more “present” within the portrayed virtual plane of existence than within their true reality. Many studies have developed a variety of approaches and methods on measuring immersion and presence in these systems, yet few have addressed the underlying technology for what it really is – namely communication technology – and evaluated the technology’s potential for immersion and presence before exposing the user to the virtual experience. Part of the issue lies in the difficulty in quantifying arguably subjective experiences such as immersion and presence. This study examines the existing literature on the definition and evaluation of immersion, presence, and virtual reality technologies, and aims to provide a theoretical framework through which virtual reality technology may be evaluated based on the human biological apparatus it appeals to. The framework is constructed on a modified version of the Media Naturalness Theory, which was selected as a basis due to the evolutionary support it provides in explaining our communication preferences. The framework may then be utilized to analyze prospective technologies for their potential to provide immersive experiences and incite presence in the users before any exposure or use has taken place, possibly providing further validity to any findings of post-exposure studies (such as with questionnaires so ubiquitous in the literature of the field).Publication Open Access A Video Projection Mapping Conceptual Design And Application: Yekpare(The Turkish Online Journal Of Design Art And Communication, 2011-07) Ekim, BernaCan recent developments in video projection techniques aid us in finding new ways of expressing our creativity and creative audio-visual works on a new surface other than the screen? Luxury used to mean a product or service only accessible by a small group of people, a product or service that was scarce (Nueno & Quelceh, 1998). However, luxury products have now become more affordable to more consumers, especially for consumers from the middle class who access more money than ever before (Hauck & Stanforth, 2007) and therefore luxury brands have the chance to flourish and establish their reputation worldwide. In order to do so, they must truly understand their consumers – and recognise how they are changing. Besides the drivers of their decisions, the purchasing behaviors of consumers are evolving. Consumers prefer to be engaged with digital channels in terms of their buying processes. Generation Y has a tremendous impact of the world economy because of the number of its representatives and increasing purchasing power, so it has been transforming into the biggest consumer segment throughout history. As a result of this, Generation Y attracts the attention of many scientific fields from psychology to economics. The main question is what makes this generation so unique both as a research topic for scientific studies and a marketing challenge. Young adults who were born between 1980 and 1990 are considered to be Generation Y and this generation has ended up to become the largest part of global consumer market and it has become an undeniable fact for luxury brands that their motivations and attitudes have to taken into consideration in the process of developing products. The brands need to communicate with the representatives of Generation Y effectively. The aim of this article is to examine Generation Ys’ attitudes, i.e. their beliefs, feelings and purchase intentions towards luxury products and the meanings of the word “luxury” to young people, reasons for buying luxury products, and, on a small scale, young adults’ luxury brand awareness and brand loyalty. In addition, this study aims at not only examining Generation Y customers’ luxury purchasing behaviour but also helping organizations understand such customers’ needs and wants. It is widely acknowledged that understanding consumer behavior is the key to be successful in business and this youth- led change in luxury consumption behavior should not be underestimated to be able to attract the attention of the future powerhouse of the global economy.Publication Open Access Basılı Mizahtan Paylaşılan Mizaha Doğru Dönüşüm: İnternette Mizah(The Turkish Online Journal of Design Art and Communication, 2015-01) Karahisar, Tüba; TR180354Humour was always present in the Turkish culture both in verbal and printed form. In the aging population, proportion of females is higher than the proportion of males. Researches show that women are to face numerous problems resulting from discriminatory practices based on age besides gender pattern in social and economic life. In this study, the discriminatory practices that the aging female population was exposed to in professional life were addressed within the cinema sector. Sample of the research consists of actors and actresses who have received awards in the branches of best actress, best actor, best supporting actress and best supporting actor in the longest-running film festival of Turkey, Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, since the beginning of the festival. Receiving an award is an indicator of successful performance for cinema actors and actresses. In this context, the role of age and gender in professional careers of cinema actors and actresses was investigated by descriptive statistics method, on the basis of age distribution with respect to the gender of cinema actors and actresses who have received awards in best actress, best actor, best supporting actress and best supporting actor since the beginning of Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. Results obtained from the study revealed similarities to researches related to actresses in the American Cinema which is a part of the literature. Research findings show that the mean age of award-winning actors is higher than the mean age of award-winning actresses in all the branches under consideration and that women receive awards at younger ages compared to men. In this context, it can be suggested that sexist approaches give rise to double jeopardy for actresses in advanced age and their professional careers are constricted in their old age.
