Publication Archi-Mimesis as a Design Doctrine(Deniz Yengin, 2019) Demirkan, Özgür; USTA, AYHAN; Ergin, EmreThis study was based on a discussion of the relationship between mimesis and architectural design. Mimesis was accepted as one of the oldest and most basic concepts of artistic and literary efforts, a method to learn and produce a representation of reality from ancient periods to today. However, mimesis is not simply used as imitation, even in ancient periods. Mimesis has a strong relationship with various parameters like the physical material reality of the world, the era, the things the era brings, and the worldview, knowledge, and experience of the designer. In this context, this study is based on the theorem of the internalization of the objective world in the designing process and the mimetic approach in the designing process by including individual approaches in the creation process. To test this theorem, a workshop, conceptualized as “Archi-Mimesis,” and accepting mimesis as creative designing doctrine, was organized. We describe Archi-Mimesis as mimesis or re-representation of the architecture, which is different from other nature-based methods like biomimetic, through the interface of mimetic methods maintained by considering reality through the creativity of architectural design and innovation oriented structure.Publication An Assessment of Professional Practice Training in Undergraduate(Deniz Yengin, 2019) BOSTANCIOĞLU, ESRA; Gemci, Kevser KesimThe scope of the architectural profession, one of the oldest professions in human history, has changed with the advent of technology. Likewise, architectural education also changes and improves all the time. Accrediting bodies evaluate architectural education and improve them through competence activities. In this study, the requirements identified by National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), an international accreditation body, and the national accreditation body Architecture Accreditation Board (MIAK) have been reviewed, upon which it has been found out that professional practice has an important share in architectural education but has not been the subject of current research. Therefore, the study aims to assess the situation in Turkey in terms of undergraduate architectural education with respect to professional practice and identify the weaknesses thereof, hence contributing to architectural education. In this context, the professional practice requirements among the NAAB and MIAK requirements have been reviewed and the areas that need to be covered in terms of professional practice within undergraduate architecture programmes have been identified. The professional practice courses in undergraduate architecture programmes and the course contents have been analysed to demonstrate the current situation of professional practice training in undergraduate architecture programmes in Turkey. The data for the analysis of courses and course contents have been gathered from the webpages of universities. Content analysis method has been used in assessing course contents.Publication From Industry to Culture: Regeneration of Golden Horn as a “Cultural Valley”(Deniz Yengin, 2019) Bosson, Ceyda Bakbaşa; TÖRE, EVRİM ÖZKANThe image shifts from industrial identity to cultural identity since 1980s in Golden Horn, one of Istanbul’s former industrial areas, encompassed cultural policies and urban regeneration processes in the area. This study discusses the positions of public and private sector investments in the region during the process of creating "The Golden Horn Cultural Valley" and reveals the policies that managed this regeneration. The research uses a multi-dimensional method considering both qualitative and quantitative data throughout economics, politics/urban cultural policies, society, culture and space. With respect to the projects, the authors highlight three main outcomes: (1) processes vary according to the actors, (2) lack of integrated vision and (3) disconnected cultural visibility.
