A computer, or a computer and modem, along with telephone connections allows communication between similar units anywhere. Consequently, internet has emerged as a giant web of computers throughout the world connected to one another by means of their communication lines. The number of people benifitting from the grat ease that compueters provide is increasing day by day. The increase in internet use within Turkey is of striking dimensions. However, inadequate academic attention has been focused on the identity of users and the purposes for which they use their computers. This study, first porposes by the University of İstanbul Research Fund, attempts to determine the primary reasons behind internet use in Turkey, the time users stay connected, and the effect that factors like educational level, economic status, sex and age have on internet use. For the purpose of the study, a total of 1000 subjects living İstanbul, Ankara and izmir and connected to internet were interviewed face-to-face. Standard questionnaires were filled out. The study, which began in November, 1999, was completed in October, 2000
