Abstract

In the 21th century the rising number of countries which join regional integrations such as the European Union in order to increase their competition power in world trade leads other countries also direct their attention to this domain. In the year 1995, Turkey agreed upon customs union and this agreement came into force in 1996. The effects of the customs unions between Turkey and the European Union is still a matter of discussion. There are lots of studies investigating the effects of Turkish foreign trade with the European Union. The aim of this study is to examine the role of customs unions on Turkish foreign trade. The changes in the export and import quantities of Turkey will be investigated. According to the result of this study, it is observed that within the twenty year of period after the customs union the share of EU-15 in the Turkish foreign trade has been diminished.
