Abstract
Okan Demiriş?s ?IV. Murat? opera, which implies Turkish music tunes in a polyphonic way and is enlightened by historical terms, presents one of the most interesting eras within the Ottoman history. In the first and second sections of this research, lives and main works of Okan Demiriş, the composer and librettist A. Turan Oflazoğlu take place. In the third section, `IV Murat? opera is examined; the plot, the main characters and correspondingly, the sociopolitical state is mentioned along with IV.Murat?s interest in arts who also happened to be a strinct ruler. In this same section, conversations about the effects of Turkish music on the work, its main theme and libretto take place. In the fourth section, one can find conversations with the artists who were on duty and of great help when the work was first produced. In the fifth section, examples are given from some press articles about the piece. The last section contains an overview at the work absorbed from researches and meetings. By means of the composer?s ability to condition international polyphonic music with melodies derived from traditional Turkish music, `IV Murat? is named as one of the most frequently staged operas and is also well appreciated as a musical reflection of Turan Oflazoğlu?s popular drama.
