Abstract

The central concern of this thesis is to get acquainted with the dramatis personae in the short stories of Sabahattin Ali, in accordance with the principles of the social realism movement which is outdated in recent times. Although Sabahattin Ali has written in many genres of literature, he is best known by his identity of the storyteller. The main target of this story is to determine Sabahattin Ali?s position within the social realism movement of which he was a representative through studying the heroes which he created in his short stories. Before starting to analyse ?the Dramatis Personae in the Short Stories of Sabahattin Ali? which is the main core of this study, the main reasons which laid the groundwork for the social realism movement and the reflections of this movement in Turkey is discussed in a separate chapter. The dramatis personae in his short stories are analysed according to the principles of the social realism and the classification of them are done thus. The analyses of the dramatis personae of Sabahattin Ali are realized under four main titles. While the heroes are categorized, their social, individual and class characteristics are taken into consideration. To this categorization, the first group of the analysed dramatis personae include the ambitious heroes of the author; the second group, the heroes of the villages, towns and the intellectual ones; the third group, the heroes both oppressing and oppressed; and the fourth and last group, the corrupted and degenerated heroes. In accordance with this research it is determined that it would prevent to achieve accurate results to name the heroes in the short stories of Sabahattin Ali as ?types? and to be specified in definite character groups as the result of their having different characteristics. Therefore they are studied by taking the principles of the social realism, which created his heroes, into consideration and the heroes take their places under specific titles thereby.
