Abstract

This study deals with the köçek tradition in historical context, this tradition?s continuity in today?s conditions and its social status. It sets out to analyse those questions in the context of the prejudice against the male dancer. To get a historical context, the study has began with the analysis of the history of the art of the dance. A gender perspective is added by discussing western male dancer?s position in that history. In the light of those discussions, written documents on the köçek tradition have been analysed and western travelers? accounts? orientalist content has been taken into consideration. For the study, people accustomed to that tradition have been interviewed. The method of oral history has been purposefully chosen to give to those people an opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings. Moreover, interviews facilitated to get information about the tradition?s continuity in today?s conditions. In conclusion chapter, homophobical approach in all those resources has been analysed. The study has revealed that the prejudice against the male dancer has continuity in different historical conditions and localities. It aimed to reveal changeability of gender roles and freer expressions forms in the art of dance.
