Publication Restricted Vernacular Rural Heritage in Turkey: An Intuitional Overview for a New Living Experience(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2021) HASGÜL, ESİN; Olgun, İnci; Karakoç, ErhanPurpose – The purpose of this paper is to emphasize passive energy refurbishment of vernacular building heritages and propose new application principles of sustainability from these vernacular heritages into contemporary architecture. Design/methodology/approach – This paper is based on a research project (The Creation of a Prototype Project within the Application of Traditional Methods in Kastamonu, Kure Rural Settlements, 2017), through €which vernacular architecture examples were analyzed, projecting for future interpretations for rural environments. Defining vernacular rural design principles is centrally important for the purposes of thisproject. As a case study from the Black Sea Region in Turkey, this example is investigated, and the outcomes of the analysis are used to reproduce in contemporary architectural terms the energy efficiency and rural patterns of the flexible rural house experience. Findings – The research provides design principles for developing a new living experience in rural environments. The overall planning and architectural analysis are made in five neighborhoods in Kure, and € three of unique vernacular architecture examples are chosen according to several criteria defined in “Kastamonu-Kure Ersizlerdere Village Design Guideline Project, 2014 € ” to get the optimum data. Materials, orientation, form, spatial organization and building’s indoor-outdoor relationship were analyzed by Autodesk’s “Ecotect Analysis” simulation program. Practical implications – Results of the proposed design principles of rural housing will be useful for new housing interpretations related to better rural development. Originality/value – While defining energy efficiency criteria of vernacular itself, the results of this paper suggest new local solutions to ecological building design and engage with critical regionalism principles referring to the potentials of what traditional dwellings can teach contemporary design. Publication Restricted Transformation of Home Environments in Pandemic: the Concept of “Life Fits Into Room” in the New Normal(Emerald Group Holdings Ltd., 2022) BİRER, EMEL; HASGÜL, ESİN; CAN, ERENPurpose: Pandemic process has led re-questioning home environments within adaptations of new activities inside due to the restriction of outdoor usage. This paper aims to reveal spatial transformations carried out through the time spent at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative study is carried out based on Garfinkel’s (1961) ethnomethodology method (documentary method of interpretation). Analysis focused on the first month of pandemic in which urgent adaptations and solutions produced at home, and the situation in last two weeks of pandemic is analyzed within a control group and comparisons were made. Perec’s (1974) statement of “a user's manual” is used as a checklist of time-space-activity observations proposed on “mondayness, tuesdayness, wednesdayness, thursdayness, fridayness, saturdayness and sundayness.” Instead of daily period, activities performed on a weekly scale were recorded and time-dependent shifts of functions were revealed. Findings: Findings introduced new discussion topics to examine dwelling spaces in “new normal.” Comparisons indicate that hypothesis of gathering all activities in room in terms of “life fits into room” concept is directed through rapid spatial behaviors in daily life as primary adaptation. Research limitations/implications: Although pandemic process continues after study, analysis of first four weeks are accepted as the period of rapid change and compared by last two weeks of pandemic. Originality/value: Pandemic indicators proposed in study brings along that there is little information on the subject in literature. Socio-spatial findings address the examinations of spatial transformations into pandemic adaptation. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited.Publication Open Access The City Experience with Location-Based Media: An Examination Through Cognitive Maps(Konya Technical University, 2021) IAVARONE, AYŞENUR HİLAL; HASGÜL, ESİN; BAŞAR, EROLPurpose The physical space has been an important value for supporting human experience. With the development of mobile devices and location-based media, these technologies have been increasingly present in our virtual spatial experience and the experience of physical city has been changed permanently. Accordingly, this paper aims to discuss the experience potential of urban space with location-based technologies. Design/Methodology/Approach The research structure of this study is based on the literature of location-based media and 'Space of flow' theory. Within the methodology, a workshop is conducted to review the cognitive mappings of the virtual city experience. The workshop is structured through two segments: Documenting the spatial experience revealed using location-based media made by cognitive mappings and testing participants' direct experiences within structured questionnaire-based interviews and finally, interpretating of the obtained data. Findings This paper provides an experiential examination of the relationship between the usage of the degree of location-based media and cognitive experience. Findings point out that experience may differ depending on the media interface used and it is controversial comparing with the physical space experience with its multiple relationships. Research Limitations/Implications The research subject had been exemplified with limited location-based media in a specific location. Originality/Value The proposed method of examining the degree of spatial experience by the location-based media linking with interviews determines the originality of the study. There are also limited studies on the topic of location-based media by focusing on the users' cognitive maps.
