Student teachers’ perspectives on teaching profession out of a multigrade classroom site visitation
(2017) Türktan, Şebnem; Özışık, Cem; HACIFAZLIOĞLU, ÖZGE; 111622; 221066; 107875
Multigrade classrooms, places where students of different grades are taught together, have been used throughout the world for two main purposes: to solve the problems of uneven student enrolment as well as the insufficient number of teachers and to provide the disadvantaged and remote areas with education. In the case of Turkey, student teachers need to gain the earliest possible awareness of a real education setting, specifically the reality of multigrade classrooms. Village schools visited in this study are the schools affiliated with one of the provinces, which was within the scope of TUBITAK Evrena 1010 Project, entitled as “Role of Immigration on Student Engagement: Influence of Social, Cultural, Psychological Factors and Social Capital” (112 K 600). The purpose of this study is to investigate the ways in which “a multigrade classroom experience in a village school” contributes to student teachers’ attitudes towards teaching and being a teacher. The research was conducted as a case study among qualitative reseach methods. The data was drawn from the reflections reported by 109 student teachers in İstanbul and analyzed by means of content analysis. This project revealed two main themes: (i) Student Tecahers’ Perceptions of the Constraints/Barriers Encountered by Teachers and (ii) Student Teachers’ Attitudes Towards Being a Teacher. This site visitation is expected to raise awareness of the student teachers to make a change in the lives of pupils and school administrators.

Challenges of the Professionalization of Department Heads in Higher Education: A Qualitative Study in Turkey
(Turkish Education Assoc, Kızılırmak Caddesi No 8, Kocatepe, Ankara 00000, Turkey, 2016-04) Dimici, Kadriye; Seggie, Fatma Nevra; Caner, Havva Ayşe; HACIFAZLIOĞLU, ÖZGE; 161702; 145163; 111622; 123268
Professionalization of department heads is a relatively recent concept of interest in the higher education administration domain and as such few studies in the extant literature address the training needs of department heads and how they become more professionalized in their work. The aim of this study is to address this gap in the literature by examining the perceptions of department heads working in public and private universities in Turkey regarding the level of professionalization in their roles as leaders of departments. The authors of this study use a qualitative approach to interview fourteen participants from four universities in Istanbul. Thematic analysis is used to determine the main and sub-themes based on the statements of the participants. The findings of this study suggest that being a department head is not a professionalized field in Turkey and the department heads generally express negative opinions about the roles because of a variety of problems that occur as a consequence of some problems related to the position. In the light of the findings, there may be a need to start a discussion as to how department heads are chosen and trained in both public and private universities in Turkey.

The Impact of Reflective Practices of English Language Teachers on the Development of A Sense of Agency
    (2018-10) Tütüniş, Birsen; HACIFAZLIOĞLU, ÖZGE; 6808; 111622
Language teaching has undergone many changes for several decades and is still changing within this complex dynamic system. Teaching is recognized as both individually practised and socially shaped phenomenon with lots of constraints imposed by the society. The concept of agency has been theorized from an interdisciplinary approach incorporating academic disciplines of sociology, philosophy, anthropology, management, economics and the related fields. The aim of this paper is to address this gap in the literature by examining the experiences of language teachers working with young learners. There is limited research literature that specifically addresses the practices of teacher agencies in language teaching. However, Johnson (2009) for example, based on Vygotsky's (1958) sociocultural theory, suggests to take a sociocultural approach in teacher education to acknowledge both social forces and the individual experiences that shape language teaching. A qualitative pilot study was conducted with 30 language teachers working in disadvantaged neighborhoods in İstanbul, Turkey with the purpose of finding out their reflective practices on the development of a sense of agency. The data was analyzed and interpreted from the basis of “professionalism and teacher identity” and provisional insights are provided for policy makers, teachers, administrators and leaders at various levels in schools and faculties of education that we believe will contribute to the literature on teacher agencies and professionalization in the field of second/foreign language teaching.

Imagine the next generation: Multiple voices on childhood experience from Turkey
(Taylor and Francis Online, 2018) HACIFAZLIOĞLU, ÖZGE; TORAN, MEHMET; 127979; 111622
This study aims to reveal the meanings attached to the concept of childhood and discuss how it is conceptualized and shaped with cultural attributes by parents and preschool teachers. The study was based on both quantitative and qualitative stance. One hundred and thirty parents and 125 preschool teachers participated in the first phase of the study. As a follow-up study, face to face interviews were also conducted with 11 parents and 13 preschool teachers to provide in-depth explanations for the definitions of childhood. Results showed that parents and preschool teachers placed the child as the representative of the moral values as well as emphasizing the obedience as one of the main qualities that a child should have. Their expectancies from their children seem to be in parallel with the meaning they attribute to childhood. Cultural, educational and psychological factors seem to be influential in the ways parents and preschool teachers define childhood.
