Formerly known for its gardens, the district has acquired a different identity after the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul in 1453. Tophane-i Amire, being the imparial armory which was established in the Ottoman period did not only name the region, but also altered the social and cultural profile of the district to a great extent. The region has suffered the great fires of Istanbul and been damaged many times by them, thus the architectural texture it possesses had undergone many changes both due to these disasters as well as political and governmental adjustments of the authority. In time, the growth and continuous territorial expansion of Ottoman dominion necessitated the innovations and advancements in the military along with the construction of additional buildings to the Tophane facilities. Together with the additional buildings, the area had once again acquired a distinct identity where civil and military architectural examples coexist. Following the effects of industrialization seen in the late 19th century, the escalating growth of the city, beginning in the early 20th century, has reached levels that prevent the perception of the integrity among Tophane facilities. After 1950, the starting of customs house constructions and the expropriation policies had changed Tophane beyond all recognition. Being completed in the second half of the 19th century, Nusretiye (Tophane) clock tower is known to be the first clock tower of Istanbul. During the period of its construction, the clock tower had been in the center of the military drill field, defining a circumferential open space by itself. However, due to the expropriation policy of the 1950s, it was taken to another spot where the customs buildings had been located. With this study, a brief examination of Nusretiye clock tower has been conducted to understand its relation to the surroundings with a projection from past to present. To analyze and discuss the established relationships in depth, the Tophane Square and the Tophane Barracks, as architectural representatives of the region and era, were also included in the scope of the study. The study aimed to reveal and present the current conditions of the clock tower, to remark the significance of the surrounding architectural interactions in the perception of an architectural heritage and to discuss the effects of the changes made to the Tophane district.Publication Color-theme-space interaction(Istanbul Kultur Univ, Atakoy Campus, Bakırkoy, Istanbul, 34156, Turkey, 2015-07) Manav, Banu; 44251In interior design, at the volume scale, colour is an important design paramater. Publication Design of space with body interaction(Istanbul Kultur Univ, Atakoy Campus, Bakırkoy, Istanbul, 34156, Turkey, 2018-01) ÖZBEK, DERYA ADIGÜZEL; 113306Humans as beings with body touch, connect with and interact with the world through their bodies. Relationship between humans and the world is defined via their body and the bodies are shaped in accordance with this relationship. Dynamic and interactive relationship between space and body has a vital role in design. Space should be designed for the user who experience instead of the standard production for static body. This study addresses the Space-Body Interaction course constructed in this understanding and the process of body-interactive space design developed within that course and its outcome products. The Space-Body Interaction course is provided as an undergraduate, shared elective course of Faculty of Architecture by Istanbul Kultur University (IKU), Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design. The course was planned in the same conceptual background and structure in the fall and spring terms of the academic year of 2016-2017. There are two objectives of the course: The first one is to inform students of the experience-based approaches of the space-body relationship. The second is to ensure transformation and internalization of the knowledge into a design product through a project process. To that end, the thinking systems that handle the space-body relationship which presents the conceptual background of both this study and this course in an experience-focused manner was put forth primarily. Next, process and outputs of the body-interactive space design, key concepts and perspectives of body-space interaction were addressed. The results of the study achieved within the context of course objectives were discussed in terms of body-space relationship, course objectives, student attainments and educational approaches.Publication Geometrical forms, model and space concept in interior architecture education(Istanbul Kultur Univ, Atakoy Campus, Bakırkoy, Istanbul, 34156, Turkey, 2015-07) Eceoğlu, ArzuAs an example for "Interior Architecture" educations given in various faculties of universities, this work is on creating space designs via models, which are made to establish the understanding of students on scale, rate and ratio. What really matters is for student to understand the space concept and get the knowledge required for reaching the right conclusions on space organization. In the later stages, created by the usage of different materials with the aim of developing space design integrity, student projects are supported to make a difference in collaboration with arts and science. The aim of this work is to analyze and show the development of design concept through the models prepared within the extent of space organization courses, the roles of geometrical forms during the design phase and the setup of the models created, by using Le Courbisie's first house model named cell. Publication In interior architecture loft design(Istanbul Kultur Univ, Atakoy Campus, Bakırkoy, Istanbul, 34156, Turkey, 2015-07) Erdemir, ZuhalLoft concept is indicated as "Loft, attic" or "on the top floor, so the floor immediately below the roof. Initially, while the roof or the floor immediately below the roof meaning, "warehouse, commercial building" has been added also. Loft is converted back to the housing of the old factory building or warehouse space by the time. Firstly, Loft spaces are preferred by artists such as painters and sculptors have been used as a residence and studio. In this way, they meets the needs of both work and living areas as well.
