Publication Metadata only A Pandemic Experience of Remote Working: Reflections on Emotions(Peterlang, 2021) Peksatıcı Yanıkoğlu, Özge; Ergun, Hande Sinem; Samur Teraman; Seray Begüm; 223341; 173087; 31285Covid-19 pandemic employs spectacular and specific characteristics that are unique only to this period. First of all, remote working during Covid-19 is enforced. In other words, it is not a choice but rather an obligation to work remotely. In addition, mobility and socialization are limited under pandemic circumstances. Moreover, companies and employees had to switch remote working suddenly, and therefore they were unprepared for this sudden change (Waizenegger, McKenna, Cai, & Bendz, 2020). Before the pandemic, remote working could have been perceived as a “positive” option that provides more freedom and flexibility to the employees, employers, and scholars in the field. However, Covid-19’s enforced remote working unraveled the efficiencies of our working assumptions and challenged them. In fact, it can be argued that “the meaning of work” has also changed during the pandemic. In order to maintain the “business as usual”, it is on the shoulders of the knowledge workers to quickly adapt to the sudden merge of the living and working environment and the new ways of digital interacting.Publication Metadata only A Transnational Account of Turkish Foreign Policy(2020) Kuru, Deniz; PAPUÇÇULAR, HAZAL; 180376This book offers an analysis of Turkish foreign policy based on transnational(ist) perspectives. In order to counterbalance the state-centric accounts that dominate this area of study, the authors provide theoretical frameworks as well as historical and contemporary case studies that emphasize transnational dynamics. The content is divided into four complementary sections that explain and exemplify transnational (f)actors in the context of Turkish foreign policy. The first addresses theoretical and ideational frameworks that illustrate the relevance of a transnational account, while the second demonstrates the possibility of developing transnationally oriented approaches even in historical cases, going beyond a presentist focus. In the third and fourth sections, the book focuses on two prominent non-state actors, namely diaspora communities and non-governmental organizations, which operate at the interstices of the domestic and the international. This allows the authors to highlight the significance of transnational dynamics in Turkey’s foreign policy. Hazal Papuççular is an Assistant Professor at the Department of International Relations, Istanbul Kültür University, Turkey. She completed her Ph.D. in Modern Turkish History at Boğaziçi University’s Atatürk Institute for Modern Turkish History and has written several books, articles and book chapters on Turkish foreign policy. She is the author of Türkiye ve Oniki Ada (1912-1947) (Türkiye İş Bankası Yayınları, 2019) and is currently focusing on Turkey’s transnational diplomatic history. Deniz Kuru is a Lecturer of Political Science at Goethe Universität Frankfurt in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. His current research areas include the intellectual history and sociology of International Relations, German and French foreign policies, Turkey’s global position, global intellectual history and global International Relations. He has published articles in Review of International Studies, International Relations, All Azimuth, Global Affairs and Mediterranean Politics.Publication Restricted After the Protest: Istanbul Park Forums and People's Engagement in Political Action(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd., 2022) RAMAZANOĞULLARI, HANDEThis article presents an overview of the Istanbul park forums that emerged in parallel with the Gezi events - social protest movements that took place in summer 2013. Despite the criticism that Gezi events were short-lived, impulsive, and ineffectual I argue that they have a long-lasting influence on democratic consciousness and new forms of political action. Istanbul park forums, the street and urban squares have become an important link between those who wish to transform the qualities of both democracy and the regime at large with efforts to create influence over local and national policy-making processes through engagement in political action. Drawing from the political theory of Hannah Arendt, this study assigns the capacities of 'deed and speech' to redefine 'politics'. Analyzing the politics of the park forum process through the lens and concepts of Arendt's political theory suggests an alternative way of evaluating the eventual dissolution of the Gezi events: rather than suffering from the inability to organize themselves within the conventional format of party politics, I show that the Gezi community deliberately created a new manner of engagement through political action, and thereby cast its influence as a historic landmark in the future of Turkish politics.Publication Open Access Age, technology adoption, and the agricultural productivity in the era of Agriculture 4.0(2020) Hamzaoğlu, Nazife Merve; Öztürkler, Harun; 315872Agriculture 4.0 is a current agenda for both developed and developing countries as its benefits to increase the agricultural productivity are inevitable. The need to feed the world has been become an important issue in the global scene and the world must increase the food production more than 70% by 2050 (De Clerck et al., 2018). Therefore, food security is now considered as a part of national security. It is also noteworthy to mention that the negative impact of climate change on agriculture is under debate; first, severe reduction in agricultural productivity due to temperature increases, heat waves, droughts, unusual climate conditions may occur in near future. Second, natural resources have been becoming more scarce than ever due to climate change, therefore conventional usage of water, soil can be stressed as agricultural inputs. Thirdly, the conventional agriculture has been criticized to pollute the environment due to use of chemical substances and contributing to Greenhouse Gas releases (in animal husbandry); new developments in production must be integrated to sustain the reduction in pollution. To overcome these negative impacts of climate change on agriculture and increase productivity, Agriculture 4.0 offers solution while applying digitalization in the production process. As is well known, neoclassical approach to production function takes capital, labour, natural resources, and entrepreneurs as the factors of production. In addition to debates regarding quality of factors not being taken into account and technology as being an exogenous factor, demographic characteristics of entrepreneur are also missing in the related literature. However, there is a long debate on the effect of farmer’s age on the productivity in the agricultural production processes through several channels such as physical capital investment decisions and attitude towards innovations in agricultural technologies. It is argued that aging of the formers leads to a significant decline in the productivity because as farmers get older they become more conservative, lose their physical capacity, and become more reluctant to the application of new technologies (Tauer, 1984, 1995; Corner-Thomas, 2015). Moreover, studies show that younger farmers can highly contribute to economic performance and sustainability (Zagata and Sutherland, 2015; Brennan et al., 2016). Since Agriculture 4.0 is the future of feeding the world and agricultural sector, and young farmers show higher capabilities in the adoption of new technologies this study aims to show the impact of age in technology adoption and agricultural productivity. Therefore, we utilize an extended version of the Cobb Douglas Production Function. Along with physical capital and labour, we add farmer as the entrepreneur weighted with an age factor. Furthermore, in different versions of the production function we incorporate several other variables such as usage of fertilizers, agricultural subsidies, and expenditure on research and development in order to control the effects of these factors. In the second stage, on the basis of theoretical and empirical constructs we drive an estimable regression function from the extended production function. Incorporating the countries and time period for which data is available we set up a panel data model. By doing so, we investigate the effect of aging on agricultural productivity and examine country specific and time specific deviations. Empirical findings are expected to provide policy implications and suggestions for future agricultural policy design.Publication Metadata only Agent-Based Modelling of Interstellar Contacts Using Rumour Spread Models(Cambridge University Press, 2020) Uyar, Tevfik; Özel, Mehmet EminSome stochastic model of rumours asserts that even an advanced communication network does not guarantee every agent hears certain news because they predict that rumour spreaders convert to stifflers when contacted with an informed agent. In this study, we adapted two rumour spread models to interstellar communication by developing an agent-based model (ABM) for exploring the issue more rigorously. We enhanced the spread models by adding two additional parameters called conversion probability and stop-criterion, which represent the eagerness and persistency of civilizations to establish new contacts. Results of the ABM under several settings suggest that limited SETI searches lead to undiscovered civilizations. Earth may be one of these undiscovered civilizations although an advanced communication network might already be set up. Hence, we speculate that rumour spread models can propose another solution to Fermi's Paradox.Publication Open Access An Environmental Perspective On The Organic Food Market In Turkey(2020) Hamzaoğlu, Nazife Merve; Öztürk Göktuna, Bilge; 315872; 39638Alternative systems to the conventional agricultural system have been sought to solve problems such as environmental pollution, reduction and degradation of domestic seed species, soil erosion, reduction of animal welfare. Organic agriculture and food market constitute one of the most important alternative systems to conventional agriculture. The purpose of our study is to look into the demand for organic food in Turkey from an environmental perspective in order to understand whether organic consumption is driven by environmental friendliness and consciousness. Socio-demographic factors, attitudes and habits and contextual factors regarding environment and food consumption are analyzed together with organic food consumption patterns in order to search for the relationship of environmental consciousness on the demand side. A consumer questionnaire including questions about attitudes and habits and contextual factors regarding environment and food consumption has been designed and conducted to 251 organic food consumers living in Istanbul. Our results show that frequent organic food consumers may properly differ organic food products from other products such as GMO containing and ionized food products, strongly believe that there is a difference between organic products that are produced in Turkey and abroad in terms of quality. They are anxious about the environmental degradation and concerned about scarcity of resources, but they do not have adequate knowledge on environmental issues and sustainability.Publication Open Access Analysis of the relationship between education and youth unemployment: evidences from Turkey and Spain(2021) Alçın, Kerim Sinan; Erdil Şahin, Begüm; Hamzaoğlu, Nazife Merve; 9467; 112240; 315872Education has a vital role in improving youth employment. Increasing youth unemployment rates and the high share of the unemployed educated young population indicate that the labor market cannot create good job opportunities. This study analyzes the relationship between youth unemployment and education in countries with a high level of youth unemployment but having different characteristics: Turkey and Spain. The analysis was conducted using Johansen Cointegration tests. The results indicate no unidirectional causal relationship from enrollment in higher education towards youth unemployment rate in Turkey and Spain. Besides, it has been observed that the increase in the higher education schooling rate does not decrease youth unemployment. The results showing the relationship between youth unemployment and education will be crucial in designing policies to improve job markets for youth.Publication Open Access Are Time Management and Cyberloafing Related? Investigating Employees’ Attitudes(2020) Ötken, A. Begüm; Bayram, Ayhan; Göl Beşer, Senem; KAYA, ÇİĞDEM; 246912; 108211; 18140Time is a critical commodity both for individuals and companies because it is not possible to substitute or purchase it. The concept of time management, therefore, attracted the attention of both academicians and practitioners. Companies started to question behaviour of employees using their companies’ Internet access for non-work-related purposes during work hours. These activities constitute an unproductive use of time and detract employees from completing their work demands. In this framework, the purpose of this study is to understand whether time management and cyberloafing are related. Data were collected from 300 employees working in Istanbul, Turkey. Results show that the time wasters dimension negatively explained the variance in serious cyberloafing. Results also show that time planning and time attitude dimensions positively explained the variance in minor cyberloafing. Understanding the relationship between time management and cyberloafing provides fruitful results for companies and individuals in terms of productivity and achieving goals at work.Publication Open Access Beyond Money: A Social Analysis of Happiness(Beykoz Üniversitesi, 2022) HAMZAOĞLU, NAZİFE MERVEAs a main indicator of well-being, happiness-related studies have become an essential topic in the economics literature; the relationship between happiness and economic factors is frequently discussed. However, social well-being is not only related to economic factors such as income and employment but also social relations, status, health, and behavioral factors. In this study, I reveal social factors affecting the happiness level. Using the World Values Survey data (2017-2021), I analyzed the relationship with several social factors. The results indicate that health, security, commitment to religion, financial satisfaction, freedom of choice, having children, interests in politics, living in a secure and democratic environment, and supporting the increase of government ownership in the industry have positive and significant impacts on happiness. Moreover, the econometric model shows that young people and women tend to be happier, and marriage and income have positive and significant impacts on happiness. Also, happier people prefer TV as an information resource, but those who prefer the internet and social media to obtain information are less happy. Lastly, perceived corruption is negatively correlated with happiness.Publication Open Access Bibliometric Analysis of Paternalistic Leadership(Hacı Mustaf Paksoy, 2024) DEVECİYAN, MERİ TAKSİThe study presents a bibliometric analysis of 520 publications found through a Web of Science database search to identify trends and developments in the academic literature on paternalistic leadership. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the highest number of citations in the publications reached in the field of paternalistic leadership was in 2022, and the most frequently used keywords were “paternalistic leadership” and “authoritarian leadership”. In addition, it was determined that the country that conducted the most studies and had the highest citation score was Peoples R China. According to the findings of the analysis, it was concluded that Cheng Bs is the researcher with the highest number of publications and citations in this field. The study is expected to contribute by raising awareness for researchers who want to study leadership literature in the field of management.Publication Metadata only Conclusion(De Gruyter Oldenbourg, 2022) Kuru, Deniz; PAPUÇÇULAR, HAZAL; 180376Publication Restricted Contested Sovereignties: Turkish Diplomacy, the Straits Commission, and the League of Nations (1924-1936)(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd., 2022) PAPUÇÇULAR, HAZALThis article analyzes Turkey's complex relationship with the Straits Commission in the interwar period. The Convention Relating to the Regime of the Straits that was signed in Lausanne in 1923 stipulated the formation of an international commission under the auspices of the League of Nations. This institution became a locus that Turkey, the other members of the Commission and the League of Nations negotiated the sovereignty of the Straits and discussed the authority over its administration. This article shows that Turkey perceived the Commission detrimental to its sovereignty. However, this article also portrays an interesting case study that Turkey conducted diplomacy with this intergovernmental organization in which it actually played a leading role. The vague relationship of the Commission with the League of Nations that Turkey was not a member of until 1932 further complicates the narrative which emphasizes the multiple layers that diplomacy was formed and performed, thereby necessitating new approaches to the study of foreign policy. In this regard, this study aims to transcend the traditional accounts on interwar Turkish diplomacy, which have been dominated by the interstate bilateral relations.Publication Metadata only Critical Conceptualization of Women's Entrepreneurship: Reflections on the Turkish Entrepreneurship Ecosystem(2022) Seçkin Halaç, Duygu; Samur Teraman, Seray Begüm; 31285While women's entrepreneurship preserves its traditional entrepreneurial mission from a neo-liberal perspective, it has also been accepted as an essential tool in ensuring equality and empowering women with a gender perspective. It is seen that supranational institutions are trying to realize these two perspectives together, at least working in this direction. This study aims to conceptualize “women's entrepreneurship” and bring it to the agenda in Turkey form a gender perspective. Evaluating the literature on women's entrepreneurship from a historical perspective and examining the fundamental inequalities embedded in entrepreneurship, especially in a developing economy such as Turkey that still has structural gaps, is the study's main contribution.Publication Open Access Digital Footprint Management: Digital Burial(Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli Üniversitesi, 2023) Alay, Hazal Koray; DEVECİYAN, MERİ TAKSİThis study aims to examine digital footprint management and digital footprint awareness and deals with this question by focusing on the concept of digital burial: What will happen to our digital data after death? Digital footprint management is a new term and has found a narrow area in the literature on management science. This study is an attempt to raise awareness of this concept. It employs the review of secondary sources as one of qualitative research methods. In addition, it examines various studies under the scope of secondary literature review and then they are subjected to word cloud analysis by taking their keywords to determine focal points of publications conducted in the field of digital footprint with the assistance of program MAXQDA 2022. According to its findings, the correct and effective use of digital footprints is a requirement of digital citizenship. The subject of digital burial, discussed in the context of digital footprint management is a fairly new concept in the literature and this situation is the most important limitation of this study. It expects to draw a theoretical framework for future research and to guide other academicians who wish to work in this field.Publication Metadata only Digital Maturity Models: A Holistic Framework for Digital Transformation(IGI Global, 2023) YILMAZ, KEMAL ÖZKANThis chapter aims to create a general framework on digital maturity models and reveal the highlights of the commonly used components of digital maturity models. The emphasis will be more on detailing human-related fundamental aspects of digital maturity models rather than the technological ones. Considering the incrementally increasing options to reach collaboration technologies and swift deployment of them to different sectors, the main challenge still remains as to manage the psychological asset related parts. Although technology is generally perceived as mechanical, whose boundaries can be drawn, tasks to be assigned can be defined; the technological elements within the concept of digital maturity also intersects with the human-related dimensions of digital transformation. The study aims to advise a systematic approach by offering a theoretical framework to manage human-related factors in a digital transformation journey with an inclusive perspective positioning technology as the core medium provider and contributes to the theoretical background in the field of study.Publication Metadata only Direct Democracy in the EU: The Myth of a Citizens' Union(2020) ERTÜRK, AHMET CEMAL; 312036Publication Metadata only Does Technology Bring Happiness? Evidence From Turkey(2022) Hamzaoğlu, Nazife Merve; Yolusever, Aras; 315872; 283333As the ultimate goal of life, happiness has remained the main focus in human history. Happiness economics has been recently one of the trending topics among researchers. As a main driver in the economic growth, technology is crucial in welfare level of economic agents. It is evident that daily life has been becoming more digitalized and technological advances directly and indirectly affect the life standards. In this sense, happiness of human being is also directly and indirectly affected by technological changes and they have an impact on life standards and daily routines. In this study, we aim to see the impact of technology on happiness in Turkey. Since there are few studies on this topic examining Turkey, we want to reveal the impact of technology on happiness level among Turkish citizens. To do so, we collected the data from World Values Survey (2017-2021) and analyzed the data collected from Turkey. Our results show that technological changes and scientific innovations do not have significant impacts on happiness in Turkey, but financial indicators do.Publication Open Access Economic Consequences of Daylight-Saving Time: Evidence from Turkey(Gümüşhane Üniversitesi, 2019) Akarsu, Gülsüm; GÜMÜŞOĞLU, NEBİLE KORUCUFor last years, it has been hot issue that transition to daylight saving time has some important consequences related to the electricity consumption, human health, performance, behavior and well-being of individuals. Since the cabinet decision in 2016, Turkey has been implementing the summertime throughout the whole year in order to save energy. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to analyze the effects of this change on economic growth and labor productivity by employing quarterly data for the time period 2006:Q1 and 2018:Q1 for Turkey and Threshold AR model in order to incorporate the nonlinear behavior in considered time series. The results show significant effect of this policy change as well as nonlinear behavior in the time series due to continuous fluctuations in the data throughout time which can be classified into at least two regimes as recession and expansion. As a conclusion, the countries should evaluate the effects of daylight saving time (DST) on different indicators before any change in the implementation.Publication Open Access Economic Growth: Is it Green or not? An Application on OECD(2021) Akarsu, Gülsüm; GÜMÜŞOĞLU, NEBİLE KORUCU; 53145; 115505For climate change mitigation and considering other environmental impacts of traditional energy sources, countries have started to implement energy policies in favor of renewable energy sources. In this way, without any detrimental effect on economic growth, countries can decrease their fossil fuel consumption. However, there is a debate about the direction of causality between renewable energy consumption and economic growth as for the total energy-growth nexus. Moreover, in the literature, the studies focus only on the total or specific type of renewable energy consumption while analyzing the direction of causality. From this point of view, there is a gap in the literature in such a way that there is a need for a comprehensive analysis which compares the existence and direction of causality for different types of renewable energy sources and technologies. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to investigate renewable energy consumption and growth nexus. By using panel data on renewable electricity generation for OECD countries over the years from 2000 to 2016, the causality is tested for different technologies. Moreover, as the economic growth may not correctly measure the overall economic well-being, another measure for welfare is used. Therefore, the main motivation of this study is to include welfare in renewable energy and growth nexus in which different type of technologies for renewable energy are considered. The results for both economic growth and welfare measure show that the existence and directi highly differs among the different technologies. Therefore, technology specific policies should be implemented in order to stimulate the renewable energy investments and consumption.Publication Metadata only Effect of External Innovation Capacity on Company Level Innovativeness(Management & Business Acad., 2021) OKATAN, KAĞAN; Alankuş, Orhan BehiçThis study focuses on the correlation of national innovation inputs and the external innovation environment with the company-level innovation output. Since all companies are aiming at sustainable innovation to ensure sustainable profit growth, the current literature has highlighted the need for a well-structured internal innovation system for innovation success and discussed the factors affecting the performance of organisations. The internal innovation system has its own dimensions that affect the success of the whole system and emphasize the significant impact of firms on innovation results. Do all companies with a high internal innovation competency and a suitable corporate culture have the chance to become worldwide innovative? What are the impacts of the external environment where the companies are located on the innovation success? And how big is the importance of external environmental inputs? This study seeks to answer these questions and draws attention to the appropriate external environment and conditions to increase firms' innovation competencies.
