The Impact of Epilepsy Education on Knowledge, Self-Management, and Stigma in Individuals With Epilepsy

Background: Epilepsy should be approached in a multidimensional manner, considering its biological, psychological, and social aspects. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of epilepsy education on people with epilepsy regarding knowledge level, self-management, and stigma. METHODS: An online survey, including an epilepsy information form, epilepsy self-management scale, and stigma scale was sent to registered patients in our epilepsy clinic. After the survey, patients were invited to a 1.5-hour epilepsy education program, conducted by 2 instructors on different days, followed by a question-and-answer session. Participants were retested posttraining. RESULTS: Of 265 patients who filled out the pretraining survey, 69 (26%) attended the education program. Those who participated were generally more knowledgeable at the baseline. University graduates and those using the internet as a source of information were more inclined to attend, whereas unmarried individuals attended less. The participant age was 39.1 years (9.2 years), with 61% female, 65% having a university degree, and 61% actively working. Seizure types included focal (45%), generalized (22%), and both (33%), with 70% experiencing less than 1 seizure per month. Posteducation, participants answered more knowledge questions correctly ( P < .001, before: 37.0 [6.0], after: 40.7 [6.1]). Awareness about swimming risks increased in the self-management scale, along with the tendency to carry informative cards, join support groups, and educate relatives. There was no change in the stigma scale. CONCLUSION: Epilepsy education has a positive impact on raising awareness about the disease and promoting self-management in people with epilepsy. The fight against stigma needs to involve broader segments of society.
Structure, IR Spectrum and UV-Induced Photochemistry of a Pyridyl-Substituted 1,3,4-Oxadiazole-Thione in Ar Matrix and Intermolecular Interactions in the Neat Crystalline Phase

The structure, infrared (IR) spectrum and UV-induced (lambda > 235 nm) photochemistry of 5-(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2(3H)-thione (abbreviated as POT) isolated in a low-temperature argon matrix, at 15 K, were thoroughly investigated. Interpretation of the experimental spectrum was assisted by theoretical calculations undertaken at the DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. In the gas phase (and in the cryogenic matrix) the molecule of the compound was found to adopt the thione-amine tautomeric form, where NH is vicinal to CS, i.e., the same tautomeric form previously observed in the neat crystalline form of the compound. Upon sublimation and subsequent deposition into the argon matrix, the compound underwent minor, yet detectable, conversion into other species. These photoproducts were identical to those formed upon in situ broadband UV irradiation (lambda > 235 nm) of the matrix-isolated compound. Two different reaction pathways were identified: the first (minor) being the CO open-ring reaction leading to the formation of an isocyanate derivative, and the second (major) corresponding to the OCS extrusion generating allenic and propargylic type bond-shift isomeric nitrilimines. The carbodiimide and cyanamide resulting from subsequent rearrangement of the nitrilimines were also observed both in the as-deposited matrix (as a result of the thermally-induced chemistry taking place during sublimation of the compound) and after in situ UV-irradiation of the matrix. The nitrilimines were only captured during the photolysis experiments and were not observed in the spectra of the initially deposited matrix, because they quickly converted to the more stable carbodiimide and cyanamide isomeric forms during matrix deposition. Coupled-cluster calculations with single and double excitations [CCSD/6-311++G(d,p)] were also performed to further characterize the nitrilimines, revealing that the allenic form is slightly more stable than the propargylic one, in agreement with the spectroscopic data. The IR and Raman spectra of the neat crystalline compound were also analyzed in the temperature range of -140 to 220 degrees C, and the dominant intermolecular interactions in the crystal were elucidated using CrystalExplorer-based analysis of Hirshfeld surfaces and interaction energies. Overall, this study contributes to understanding of the structure, spectroscopy and chemical reactivity of oxadiazoles.
The Energy of Cameron-Walker Graphs

The Cameron-Walker graphs are the graphs for which their matching number equals their induced matching number. In this paper, we study lower bounds for the graph energy in terms of induced matching numbers for the general graphs with equal matching and induced matching number. Moreover, we study the lower bounds of the graph energy of Cameron-Walker graphs.
Digital Infographic Creation in Design Education: A Participatory Learning Algorithm Measuring Location-Based Spatial Impact

Design education includes many pursuits that deal with creativity, thinking and visual communication techniques in the learning process. This study aims to create a participatory learning algorithm based on a location, while measuring the spatial impact through an emergent situation. The exemplified issue is determined as fire that emerged due to climate change, which has become a significant agenda of the 21st century in most countries. The scope of the study is based on the creation of an algorithm for participatory learning techniques by using social media to create digital infographics in a workshop redefining Mugla, an affected place after the fire. The workshop context is designed to reveal the interaction between humankind and its natural environment, including nature, topography, animals, aids and all actors affected after the fire, while students are involved in research practices on participatory learning, using the diary method as a pedagogical research tool. The outputs of the participatory learning algorithm examine the informative part of the produced digital infographics with ethnomethodology and the visual part with descriptive analysis as a hybrid methodology taking data materials from social media. Cumulative results that reflect the location-based spatial impact are measured with a coding system of frequencies and a time-series data of polar mapping. We propose that such a participatory learning algorithm can improve students' visual communication, design creation, visualisation, expression of ideas and organisation of knowledge skills with the discipline of working together to make multilayered spatial readings.
