Abstract

Opera, which was born toward the end of 16th century and developed later on, began to be performed in our country during Ottoman period. Plays that began with the opening of the theatres after the Declaration of Administrative Reforms continued with the conservatories on a national scale. Many operas have been written throughout history whose themes are Turks. G. Rossini, one of the most important composers of the classical and romantic period, composed many operas that involved Turks. In this study the two act opera Maometto II by Rossini was analyzed with regard to its composition and staging process. The study involves the world premiere (1820), Rossini Opera Festival (2008), America premiere (1988), Turkey premiere (1990) and the performance of Maometto II Opera at 1st Istanbul International Opera Festival (2010) with in terms of stage design, directing, costumes and players. In the present study, the reasons for famous opera composers to make Turks a theme of their compositions were analyzed. To this end the Maometto II Opera, an opera about one of the most important sultans of Ottoman Empire, Fatih Sultan Mehmet, was studied. This study contains plenty of information about the composer Rossini and the various interpretations of Maometto II Opera. With the data gathered it is evaluated that this study will be the first of its kind in Turkish.
