Abstract
The history of American film spans over a 100 years and has gone through several stages. These stages differ aesthetically and have been influenced by social and cultural dynamics happening in that particular time in history. Furthermore, American film, which has now become synonym with Hollywood ? the headquarters of filmmaking ?is more than just what we see on the screen; these films come out of a well-established and powerful studio system, which dictates the content of the films delivered to audiences. At some points in history very strong, the studio system is an integral part of Hollywood filmmaking. This power, often unknown to audiences, is, in fact, a determining factor in the final cut of any film produced by one of the studios. This study will examine the reasons for the changes in American film aesthetics; what historical events, artistic movements and technological developments affected the visual style of films. The changes in the studio system will be analyzed, as well as the main stages of the Hollywood film: Classic Hollywood film, New Hollywood film, Blockbusters and Indiewood.
