Abstract

Intertextuality is described as the relations between different texts which can be seen in every area of life and art without distinction of time and place. Each work of art has some traces of other work of arts whether they are found in the same art discipline or not. These traces can be seen as direct references to another work of art or they can be found in a more implicit way. Cinema is a kind of art that is a combination of all other arts and it shows its development parallel to technology. The reason that it is named as the seventh art is not only because it came out after other six arts but also it is a combination and has some traces of all other six art disciplines. The relation between cinema and literature can be obviously seen in the adaptations of novels to the cinema. While making novel adaptations it is impossible to avoid making intersemiotic change between the linguistic and visual codes. The adaptation is a different and unique work from the novel, so the new adaptation has an intertextual relation with the novel that it is adapted from. In this work the relations are analysed between the novel ?The Hours? and the adaptation of the same novel to the film. Michael Cunningham?s novel ?The Hours? is closely based on another example of a new novel ?Mrs. Dalloway? that is written by Virginia Woolf. In this case, while analyzing the movie ?The Hours? it is a necessity to find out the references and implications to the novel ?Mrs. Dalloway?.With the help of these closely related art works, an intertextual journey is possible for the readers and the spectators.
