Abstract

In this thesis, primarily birth place and social and literary environment of Peyami Safa is described who is one of the most important writers of Republic Period. After this introduction, focus will be on his entry to the literary world, his understanding of art and writing. This part is important in terms of exploring Peyami Safa's both personal and literary side. On the 5th part of the thesis, it's majored on social matters in writer's novels such as Mahser, 9. Hariciye Kogu§u, Yalmziz, Fatih-Harbiye, Matmazel Noraliya'nm Koltugu and Bir Tereddudiin Romani. Before focusing on the social matters, main theme and short summary of the novels are given. Especially Peyami Safa's comments on social matters which are specified as the footnote, was extremely valuable in realizing my main purpose here. In his novels the feature which attracts the most attention is; at first his novels carry psychological characteristics, while afterwards they become novels with social attributions intensely. What I can add here according to the novels I handled is writer constantly focuses on how Europe is misperceived and that's why degenerated type of people emerged in the society plays a big role in breaking our traditions. Peyami Safa tired to explain that Turkish society after the 1st World War is face to face with a big trouble or in another words surrounded by disease because of these people who are criticizing the East with negative approach and who ignore their own individualism.
