Abstract

Turkish nationalism became politically stronger during the Second Constitutional and especially the Armistice period and had an impact on Ottoman women’s lives and activism. Türk Kadını (Turkish Woman), a literary and sociological women’s periodical published between 1918 and 1919, was a nationalist periodical that gave importance to publishing women’s writings. Along with many distinguished male writers of the time wrote for the periodical, one mission of the periodical was to create an opportunity for girls and women to become writers. The magazine not only encouraged women and young girls to publish their articles but also published the writing lessons Ömer Seyfettin prepared for young girls. While doing so, they prioritized strengthening Turkish nationalism. In this article, this mission of Türk Kadını to educate women writers and its impact on Turkish women’s movement and Turkish nationalism is examined by scrutinizing women’s writings and writing lessons in the periodical.
