Abstract

From the turn of the 20th century a rapid use of technology and new media in stage performances is to observe. Technology has transformed the performing arts and its stage productions. Concerts are extended by digital technology, film or video projections and lighting design. A shift from a traditional, analogue stage performance to a complex multimedia production is carried out. Technology-based components nowadays play an important role in the stage performances and have become an integral part of music performances on stage. What is the effect of technology on music stage productions and how did it convert the stage and the performances on stage? As the question of the effects of technology is rather discussed in related areas such as theatre or visual and performance art this thesis aims to focus on music performances on stage. In a brief outline about the historical development of a stage and its lighting it will be explained how the stage and its components as a setting for concerts, theatre plays or dance have evolved. By an analysis of a modern music stage concert this study clarifies how new technology and new media is used in music performances. It verifies that new technological tools such as a lighting and a sound reinforcement system, computer softwares, screens and ¬stage technologies offer the performers and stage producers new possibilities for increasing quality, perfection and creativity. Target is the audience, performers and stage producers aim to make the music performance to an unforgettable experience for their listeners. They want to let them see, hear and feel. As the technical infrastructure on stage becomes more complex and plays an important role that needs to be controlled and organised by stage managers, the question comes up if that management nowadays is more important than the performer. This thesis sums up with positive and negative outcomes of the technological era on stage. Key Words: Stage, Lighting, Acoustic, Stage Performance, Sound Reinforcement System, Technological Develeopments, Stage Design, Art Management.
