Abstract
In this study; the definition of the polyphonic music art in the World and in our country; how it showed a development and how it affected the development of the opera art of the music were examined. The definition and history of the opera were studied in short periods and the followed way in its development was explained. At the Republic period in the year of 1923, the development of the opera art and the role of Atatürk in this development were put forward. Briefly, starting with Özsoy opera ordered by Atatürk and the following operas were mentioned in this study. The importance and the contributions to our music of Turkish- Fives lived at the foundation period of the Republic and introduced us the polyphonic music were explained and the names of the second and third generation composers were given. Apart from these, the operas of the contemporary Turkish composers set forth below were examined from the librettoes point of view: Lives of Ahmed Adnan Saygun, Cemal Reşit Rey, Necil Kazım Akses, Nevit Kodallı, Ferit Tüzün, Sabahattin Kalander, Cengiz Tanç, Okan Demiriş, Çetin Işıközlü and Selman Ada; the works of Ahmed Adnan Saygun?s that?s Özsoy, Kerem, Taşbebek (Porcelain Doll), Köroğlu, Gılgameş; Cemal Reşit Rey?s Çelebi, Necil Kazım Akses?in Bayönder (Mr. Leader), Nevit Kodallı?s Van Gogh and Gılgameş; Ferit Tüzün?s Midas?s Ears, Sabahattin Kalender?s Mad Dumrul and Nasrettin Hoca, Cengiz Tanç?ın Mad Dumrul, Okan Demiriş?s Murat the Forth, Karyağdı Hatun and Yusuf with Züleyha, Çetin Işıközlü?s Ararat?s Legend/Gülbahar, from Lip to Heart and İnanna, Selman Ada?s Ali Baba and 40 Bandits and Aşk-ı Memnu
