Abstract

IMPORTANCE OF VARIABLE ST AR OBSERV ATION S BY AMA TEUR ASTRONOMERS The number of amateur astronomers in Turkey is inereasing rapidly in recent years. Many of them have their own telescopes equiped with detectors such as a CCD camera. We know that beautiful pictures are secured with these instruments. But it is now time to tum these hobies into scientific observations, mainly concentrating on variable stars. Our amateur astronomers should come together under a national association which helps its members with coordination of observations, with astronomical tools to be used in the reductions, and with assessing the accuracy of their observations. This national body should maintain a database for the benefit of its members and for the use of professional astronomers.
