This thesis examines the notions of "culture" and "civilization" and their treatment in the work of Yahya Kemal. The thesis consists of two parts. The first explores the concepts of culture and civilization within the context of the major scholarly works on the Tanzimat and post-Tanzimat age. Therefore, it necessarily treats such topics as Westernization, modernization, and cultural and civilizational transformation. The second part looks at Yahya Kemal's treatment of the notions of culture and civilization through a close reading of his poems and articles. Taking Yahya Kemal's opus as a whole, it explores the concepts of Westernization, modernization, and cultural transformation. Over time, the world 'culture' has acquired a plethora of meaning in the works of philosophers, and those attempting to define it in the modern age have often mentioned it along with the word 'civilization'. The aim of this work is to give a chronological exploration of both of these concepts.en
