Publication A General Look At The Environment And Environmental Problems In Tourism(Int Scientific Conference Sgem, 14, Kilment Ohridsky Blvd, Sofia, 1797, Bulgaria, 2011) Yazıcı, Hacer Neyir; TR113404In literature, environment is mentioned as "the whole nature and examples of human-made structures in the nature together with human beings and all other living beings". Environment is the atmosphere or conditions in which an organism exists and it is an atmosphere that existed with the first living being on earth. Environment is the physical, biological, social, economic and cultural atmosphere where people and other living beings lead their lives and interact with one another. Human life is built on various balances. Breaks that occur in the links that form the natural balance which people establish with their nature affect the whole chain, lead to defects in this balance and cause environmental problems. Basic environmental problems that people face can be summarized as follows: Increasing pollution of the air, water and earth and an important part of them becoming unusable, big cities' and industrial areas' becoming impossible places to live in due to environmental pollution, ozone layer depletion, increasing global warming, increase in cancer and similar diseases, fast consumption of natural resources, etc. Although. the developing industrial sector is shown as the primary perpetrator of environmental problems, tourism, which is referred to as the industry without a chimney, also affects the environment negatively. Tourism, which is closely related to the environment in terms of its sustainability, generally seeks after short term benefits during the marketing of resources and it can harm these resources - which are its raw material. Tourism, which is the user, not the protector, of tourism in its development process, caused concerns about the environment since it helps economic development in developing and underdeveloped countries including Turkey. In this study, environment and environmental problems arising out of tourism will be touched upon, the problems caused on tourism by environmental problems will also be analyzed and the tourism dimension of environment and its problems will be reflected in the study with an extensive literature study.Publication A tree learning approach to web document sectional hierarchy extraction(2010) Pembe, F.Canan; Göngör, TungaThere is an increasing availability of documents in electronic form due to the widespread use of the Internet. Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) which is mostly concerned with the presentation of documents is still the most commonly used format on the Web, despite the appearance of semantically richer markup languages such as XML. Effective processing of Web documents has several uses such as the display of content on small-screen devices and summarization. In this paper, we investigate the problem of identifying the sectional hierarchy of a given HTML document together with the headings in the document. We propose and evaluate a learning approach suitable to tree representation based on Support Vector Machines.Publication Aging-related diseases and autophagy(2016) Çoker Gürkan , Ajda; Palavan Unsal, Narcin; ARISAN, ELİF DAMLA; YERLİKAYA, PINAR OBAKANAutophagy is fundamental, evolutionary conserved physiological process at molecular level which targets long-lived cytosolic proteins and organelles to be recycled through lysosomal degradation. Diminished autophagic activity caused cellular stress in many organisms following aging, and inhibition of autophagy in model organisms causes degenerative changes and pathologic diseases observed with high incidence ratio generally in older ages. Consequently the delayed senescence or increased longevity in model organisms often stimulate autophagy, and autophagy inhibition compromises anti-aging effects. The cytoprotective function of autophagy is presented in various human diseases such as lung, liver, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegeneration, myopathies, cancer, stroke, infections and metabolic diseases which are found associated with autophagic targets. These pathologies are defined with their age-dependent characteristics, is not fully understood that how autophagy network regulates metabolism and may cause diseases in age-related manner. In this book chapter, we are going to discuss the autophagy and aging relationship in three different parts. In the first section autophagy and aging relationship is going to be presented through explaining responsible signalling network. The autophagy and age-related neurological disorders, genetic basis of age-dependent diseases and the functional role of autophagy is going to be discussed in the second and third part of the chapter.Publication Brain-Body-Mind in the nebulous cartesian system: A holistic approach by oscillations(SPRINGER, 233 SPRING STREET, NEW YORK, NY 10013, UNITED STATES, 2011) BAŞAR, EROLPublication Digital Game As A New Media And Use Of Digital Game In Education(Iated-Int Assoc Technology Education A& Development, Lauri Volpi 6, Valenica, Burjassot 46100, Spain, 2011) Yengin, DenizTransfer of information is trying to stay alive with the language but it is also supported and developed by the discovery of calligraphy. The development of technology in writing, keep records of information systematically. The discovery of electricity was opened in front of the electromagnetic discoveries and sharing of knowledge gained momentum over the channels. According to Huizinga game "game is an activity which is done voluntarily and in regular activities in a particular time and in space". This shows us the concept of the game is not "an unnecessary activity", it has turned into a sense of social and individual vital activity. Reproduced by the codes are real, users in different ways transmitted. Digital game is one of the ways of transmission. Digital media tools such as the game is played the video game and computer game. These environments are considered under the heading of Digital Games. Digital games provide an interactive environment with individuals as they allow electiveness, mobility and non-linearity. In an era of economic angst and where real and virtual identities are being disputed, individuals of the information society are searching for something different other than mass communication. They seek after individual experiences. Digital game environments allow users to gather ideas by allowing them to gain virtual experiences as opposed to real life events. Due to their rich visual content, digital games have the characteristic to shorten the learning period of individuals. Digital games offer users fantasy worlds where they can become lose themselves in different identities. This way through modeling, users are able to 'free' themselves. The main focus in this study will be to analyze the use of digital game in education. Alongside surveys, the study will also make use of literary sources. The universe of the study will be the Turkish students. The data collection method is conducting survey. The answers to the questions in the survey have been transferred to a SPSS environment, where descriptive and inferential analyses will lead us to understand the use of digital game in Turkey's education sector. The relationship between digital games and their users will also be examined. The quantitative study of education with digital games will be a useful source for future studies and will bridge the gap in this area.Publication Environmental cues that affect knowing: A case Study in a public hospital building(Elsevier Science Bv, Sara Burgerhartstraat 25, Po Box 211, 1000 Ae Amsterdam, Netherlands, 2011) Garip, Ervin; TR162379Hospital buildings can be described as sophisticated public areas due to their functional organizations. complexity and architectural configuration. Although these buildings generally cover all the functional requirements, quite often they are not able to face the psychological needs of patients and their companions. The research which is presented in this article focuses on the "perceptive memories" of companions, during their visits in the hospital. The main aim of the study is to describe the "visual characteristics" of the environment that helps the users to "know" the building and affect the "legibility". The case study was carried out in one of the largest public hospitals in Istanbul, the CAPA Clinical Faculty, which has a distinctive architectural form. The symmetrical plans of the building provided an opportunity to compare data gathered from the different departments of the hospital which have very similar configurations but different wall colours, signage systems, functions, lighting design, floor coverings and landmarks. 41 participants were engaged in a questionnaire task, which contained open-ended questions, and photographs taken from similar points and presented the same perspectives that were chosen on purpose. The participants were asked to choose their departments from the picture boards and explain the reason for their choice by describing the physical characteristics of the environment. In the literature, these mentioned points are called "choice points", places where people get information from the environment and make decisions about their movements. As a result of the study, the analysis of the data provided support that people need environmental cues for describing and knowing their environment. The results essentially present the fact that legibility decreases in conditions in which there are fewer environmental cues. The research also suggests that the time spent in the hospital plays a significant role in the task performance. People who spent more time in the hospital tended to use different descriptive words from others. One of the most significant purposes of architectural design is to create environments in which users are psychologically satisfied with the human-environment interaction system. It is essential that the organization of the physical environment satisfies peoples. psychological needs, particularly in public places such as hospital buildings, where people don't have time and energy to waste. In this work, Respiratory signals (mask pressure, airway flow, and lung volume) are measured by using artificial lung simulator and mannequin head and respiratory parameters set on the simulator are estimated by the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE). However, prior to the estimation, muscular pressure signals that symbolize the effect of the respiratory parameters on the respiratory signals are computed by using least mean square (LMS) based adaptive noise canceler (ANC). It is found that LMS filter length considerably effects the filter output and in turn the estimation results. Thus, it is suggested to use mis-adjustement criterion in LMS-ANC filter to select the filter order by processing the signals that have only one respiratory parameter variation. In conclusion, respiratory parameters are successfully estimated from the muscular pressure signals that are filtered out with appropriate filter lengths.Publication EU Influence Beyond Conditionality: Turkey Plus/Minus the EU(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd., 2021) TÜRKDOĞAN, SEYYİDE SENATurkey has deep historical roots with the European Union (EU). The Turkish application to establish an association with then-European Economic Community in 1959 marked the first interaction between the two, and after several attempts Turkey received candidate state status in 1999. The beginning of Turkey’s accession negotiations on October 2005 constituted an important turning point for Turkey’s relations with the EU and Turkey’s socio-political transformation...Publication Fiber architectures for composite applications(2016) Bilişik, Kadir; Sahbaz Karaduman, Nesrin; Bilişik, Nedim ErmanPublication Fuzzy C-Means Algorithm with fixed cluster centers for uncapacitated facility location problems: Turkish case study(2014) Esnaf, Şakir; Küçükdeniz, TarıkIn this study, a new algorithm to solve uncapacitated facility location problems is proposed. The algorithm is a special version of original fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm. In FCM algorithm, unlabeled data are clustered and the cluster centers are determined according to priori known stopping criterion iteratively. Unlike the original FCM, the proposed algorithm allows the unlabeled data are to be assigned with single iteration to related clusters centers, which are assumed to be fixed and known a priori like location of facilities according to their degrees of membership. First, the proposed algorithm is applied to various benchmark problems from literature and compared with integer programming. Second, the proposed algorithm is tested and compared with particle swarm optimization (PSO) and artificial bee colony optimization (ABC) algorithms based uncapacitated facility location method on alternative versions such as discrete, continuous, discrete with local search and continuous with local search in literature for a Turkish fertilizer producer's real data. Numerical results obtained from real life application show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the PSO-based and ABC-based algorithms.Publication Glimmmerring Light of Transcendence(2011) Sezgin, ErkutPhenomenology differs from the traditional epistemological ontological theories in that theorizing with words are given up for elucidating the signifying phenomena in the weave of which intentionality are structured to operate with words used as means to describe ends, in which means are described as "words and descriptions", "language" as such; and ends are described as "the reality", "objects", "things", "events", "world" as such. Such way of using language in theories of subject object epistemologies is a form of expression of an intentionality the modalities of which are operationally structured with learning and operating with the rules of pictures held fast as standards, rules of criteria of the truth beliefs in identifying what is "true" and "real" in language. Failure of awareness of manifest internal connections of signifying phenomena expressive of intentionality and truth beliefs in connection with the use of pictures and rules of language manifests with its own doxa in the form of attributing or denying essential qualities as to subject object descriptions and as to their interactions, in contrast to an awareness that is capable of tracing back and forth the historical structuring of intentionality operational with pictures and rules of historical languages. The latter only clarifies manifest phenomena expressive of intentionality in internal connections operating and using signs as means and ends without presupposing or introducing entities by means of projecting pictures of language. That clarification works by elucidating the identities and differences attributed to entities in terms of the uses of pictures or signs in internal connection with the uses of other signs the rules of which are kept fast and change by the changing paradigms of cultural-conventional-historical language-games. Here transcendence amounts to the trans-historical dimension of awareness which unknots the knots of operational thinking habits with rules and pictures of historical languages; which are habits that otherwise so chain thinking with the historical intentionality of a historical epoch and systems of beliefs as not to respond and communicate anymore with the self-illuminating light of awareness as characterized by Plato's cave metaphor.Publication Globalization and Turkey's energy policies(2014) Kıvılcım, FulyaAlong with the concept of globalization, the changing paradigm in international politics has been attached to energy policies of states. From an economic perspective to political tendencies, the interdependency of energy and security concerns illustrates the possible outbreak of wars and national conflicts around the globe. Turkey, within the geo-political and geo-strategic position, is under a competitive challenge of security paradigm whilst the hegemonic powers' energy policies attach to her hinterland in the region. This chapter examines the energy policies of great powers in the international arena and the effects of these policies on developing countries. In this study, alternative security strategies and energy policies have been assessed for long-term economic and politic stability for Turkey.Publication GMO analysis methods for food: From today to tomorrow(2017) Çakır, Özgür; Arı, Şule; MERİÇ, SİNANIn the last decades, the dynamic face of biotechnology increased the number of M plants and abled the production of more precise genetically modified organisms. Since the introduction of recently developed new breeding techniques, there has been on-going debate on food safely and on the regulation concern of new biotech crops. The presently used one-by-one approach for CMOs which has been commercialized and developed by mainly transforming the usage of a transgenic insert so far, is reorganized for legislation needs of these new organisms. Furthermore, the growing number of complexities of G MOs in the commercialization pipeline and the possibility of the presence of unauthorized CMOs in the food chain has led to a demand for new technologies and stratagies to detect CMOs. In order to provide readers with current viewpoints on this topic, this chapter focuses on the key points at present. These are developing biotech plants, analysis methods for food and feed in the light of new breeding technologies, and the unintended effects of genetic transformation. It will summarize the DNA-based polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique, the most widely accepted GMO detection method, which is classified into screening, gene-specific, construct specific, and transgenic event-specific methods according to the level of specificity. 'ubsequently, this chapter will elaborate the envisaged evolution of the GMO crops and the challenge for the detection methods of new biotech crops.Publication Industrial leadership: Leading within the field of construction and design(2017) Kasapoğlu, Esin; 112138The structure of the design and construction organizations is different from that of the service or manufacturing industry. Although design and construction organizsations are parts of the construction industry, they are different from each other, also. This chapter is based on the researches investigating the leadership behaviours of construction professionals and consists basically of two main sections. In the first section, the concept of leadership and importance of leadership in design and construction processes will beis discussed. In this first section, firstlyinitially, as the leaders of the design teams, the importance of leadership skills of architects in both architectural design teams and other design teams, and, secondly, the importance of leadership skills of construction professionals will beis evaluated. In the second section, the focus of the study will befocuses on the evaluation of leadership behaviours of construction professionals with a literature review of previous researches. In this second section, initially, the leadership stiles in design teams, and secondly leadership stiles of construction teams will beis evaluated.Publication Leadership in non-profit organisations(2017) PARSEHYAN, BESTE GÖKÇEEmerging at the end of the twentieth century, non-profit sector has taken on a new significance. Non-governmental organisations, health institutions, educational institutions and museums are examples for the variety of non-profit organisations. Museums are defined as the symbols of national cultures and bridges uniting the past with the present. However, it may be suggested that this definition has lost its validity on a large scale due to globalism that penetrated into our lives in the twentieth century. Globalism and multiculturalism played an important role in the industrialisation of culture, and being the symbols of culture, museums assumed the form of dynamics within this industry. Accordingly, the concept of museum leadership gained importance. The increasing competition amongst museums makes leadership more crucial. Compared to other sectors, museums have not been studied enough in terms of leadership and the late, but the necessary attempt to improve museum leadership is of vital importance for cultural industry. This study first discusses leadership and non-profit organisations separately, and afterwards, it investigates into leadership in non-profit organisations. Lastly, it elaborates on museum leadership, which is a popular concept of the modern day.Publication Smallest position value approach(2009) Taşgetiren, Fatih; Chen, Angela; Gençyılmaz, Güneş; Gattoufi, SaidIn a traveling salesman problem, if the set of nodes is divided into clusters for a single node from each cluster to be visited, then the problem is known as the generalized traveling salesman problem (GTSP). Such problem aims to find a tour with minimum cost passing through only a single node from each cluster. In attempt to show how a continuous optimization algorithm can be used to solve a discrete/combinatorial optimization problem, this chapter presents a standard continuous differential evolution algorithm along with a smallest position value (SPV) rule and a unique solution representation to solve the GTSP. The performance of the differential evolution algorithm is tested on a set of benchmark instances with symmetric distances ranging from 51 (11) to 442 (89) nodes (clusters) from the literature. Computational results are presented and compared to a random key genetic algorithm (RKGA) from the literature.Publication The Effects Of Teachers' Attitudes On Students' Personality And Performance(Elsevier Science Bv, Po Box 211, 1000 Ae Amsterdam, Netherlands, 2011) Uluğ, Mücella; Eryılmaz, Ahu; YILDIRIM, MELİS SERAY ÖZDEN; TR142331; TR107268The emphasize of student centered educational topics is usually on the effect of teachers' attitudes on students' academical success with a lack of lifespan developmental perspective. A teacher with his teaching methods and furthermore with his attitudes and behaviours, provides his students to gain a mentally healthy personality and to have a new clear world view by leaving unforgettable traces on them. This is a prepatory study to uncover how attitudes of teachers affect the personalities and performances of students. In this sense this study will provide an emic understanding of education and the dynamics of relationship between teachers and students beyond the limited areas of classes and courses. Sample group of research consists of totally 353 students from different departments of Istanbul Kultur University and Maltepe University. By giving a questionaire the students were asked to give samples of their primary school, secondary school, high school and university teachers' positive and negative attitudes and behaviours as well as to tell how it effects their personality development and performances by giving samples. The most important findings of the research evidenced that teachers' positive attitudes have positively influence students' personality as well as their life performances. Based on these findings teachers' role in lifespan education as beyond a simple knowledge transformation is discussed. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. The present survey tries to bridge these concepts. Methodology - A theoretical and empirical informed approach. Findings - The theory of D. O. Hebb opened the way to "Neurobiology of Learning" in the past century. The S-Matrix theory of Werner Heisenberg and the so-called Feynman Diagrams that consider everything in the path-history of particles opened up new avenues to predict production of elementary particles. This as Hayek proposed or assumed in his theoretical monograph The Sensory Order. Originality/value of paper - Besides Fuster and Edelman few (if any) currently practicing neuroscientists have any knowledge of or appreciation of Hayek's philosophical psychology.
