Yıldız örtümesinin gözlenebilmesi için öncelikle, Küçük Gezegenin, örtülmenin olacağı yıldızın önünden geçiş zamanının tespit edilmesi gerekmektedir. WinOccult V.3.0. programı yardımı ile bu örtülme zamanı hesaplanabilir. Bu yöntemde, Küçük Gezegenin Yer ile bir yıldız arasından geçişi sırasında yıldızın örtüldüğü süre ölçülür. Daha sonra, Küçük Gezegenin bilinen uzaklığı ve yörüngesi üzerindeki hareket hem kullanılarak çapı belirlenir. Küresel Küçük Gezegenler için yıldız örtülmesi tekniği çok duyarlı sonuçlar verir. Yıldız örtülmesi yöntemiyle elde edilen sonuçlar ile termal radyometri başta olmak üzere bütün dolaylı teknikler güvenilir biçimde kalibre edilebilir.The dimneter of an asteroid can only be measured by the occultations. In order to observe an occultation of a star by the asteroid, the first step is to determine the time of its passage infront of a star on the sky. This time can be calculated using WinOccult Ver. 3.0 software. In this method the duration of the occultation of a star is measured. Then the dimneter of the asteroid is calculated-using• the its distance and the orbital velocity. Occultation technique gives very precise results for the spherical shape asteroids.
