While reflecting all the incidents, it has also been a social rebellion with its criticism perspective. Because of this, it was considered as a historical evidence in every age. This study investigates the development of art and the relation between art and society under the light of musical activities in Istanbul. The definitions of art and culture have been made. Evolution of these terms arising from the changes in the society over time and the effect of social behaviors on art has been mentioned. The development of art environment in Istanbul has been examined in two sections; before the year 2000 and after. Urban transformation in 1980's has completely effected the appearance of the city and the social structure, while the project for Istanbul becoming 2010 Europe Cultural Capital has enabled societies who are unable to reach art to be included in art. In the last section, four art organizations in Istanbul (Akinguc Auditorium and Art Center, Kadikoy Municipality and Sureyya Opera, Cemal Resit Rey Concert Hall, Zorlu Performance Center) has been introduced and classical music events held in Istanbul and the attendance to these events has been discussed with the art directors of these organizations.İnsanla birlikte var olan sanat, tarih boyunca insanın parçası olduğu toplumların gidişatına göre gelişim göstermiştir. Gelişen tüm olayları yansıtırken, eleştirel yönüyle de toplumun bir başkaldırısı halini almıştır. Bu nedenle de her dönemde tarihsel belge niteliği taşımıştır. Bu çalışmada İstanbul'daki müzik etkinlikleri üzerinden, sanatın gelişimi, sanat ve toplum ilişkisi konuları incelenmiştir. Sanat ve kültür kavramlarının tanımları yapılmıştır. Bu kavramların zaman içerisinde toplumsal yapıdaki değişikliklerle birlikte geçirdiği dönüşüme ve toplumsal hareketlerin sanat üzerindeki etkisine değinilmiştir. 2000 yılının öncesi ve sonrası olarak iki ayrı bölümle İstanbul'da sanat ortamının gelişmesi incelenmiştir. 1980'lerdeki kentsel dönüşüm şehri çehresini ve toplumsal yapıyı tamamen etkilerken, 2010 Avrupa Kültür Başkenti'nin İstanbul olması, proje kapsamında sanata erişim sağlayamayan kesimlerin de sanatın içerisine dahil edilmesi projesi değerlendirilmiştir.
