Publication Metadata only Agent-Based Modelling of Interstellar Contacts Using Rumour Spread Models(Cambridge University Press, 2020) Uyar, Tevfik; Özel, Mehmet EminSome stochastic model of rumours asserts that even an advanced communication network does not guarantee every agent hears certain news because they predict that rumour spreaders convert to stifflers when contacted with an informed agent. In this study, we adapted two rumour spread models to interstellar communication by developing an agent-based model (ABM) for exploring the issue more rigorously. We enhanced the spread models by adding two additional parameters called conversion probability and stop-criterion, which represent the eagerness and persistency of civilizations to establish new contacts. Results of the ABM under several settings suggest that limited SETI searches lead to undiscovered civilizations. Earth may be one of these undiscovered civilizations although an advanced communication network might already be set up. Hence, we speculate that rumour spread models can propose another solution to Fermi's Paradox.Publication Metadata only Analytic Functions With Conic Domains Associated With Certain Generalized q-integral Operator(Korean Mathematical Society, 2023) Ahuja, Om P.; ÇETİNKAYA, ASENA; Jain, Naveen KumarIn this paper, we define a new subclass of k-uniformly starlike functions of order-gamma (0 <= gamma < 1) by using certain generalized q integral operator. We explore geometric interpretation of the functions in this class by connecting it with conic domains. We also investigate q sufficient coefficient condition, q-Fekete-Szego inequalities, q-Bieberbach De Branges type coefficient estimates and radius problem for functions in this class. We conclude this paper by introducing an analogous subclass of k-uniformly convex functions of order-gamma by using the generalized q-integral operator. We omit the results for this new class because they can be directly translated from the corresponding results of our main class.Publication Metadata only An Analytical Approach to Machine Layout Design at a High-Pressure Die Casting Manufacturer(Springer-Verlag Singapore Pte Ltd., 2022) EMİR, OĞUZ; AKTİN, AYŞE TÜLİNSahin Metal was founded in 1975 on a 7500 m(2) area in.Istanbul to supply high-pressure aluminum casting parts to a variety of industries, especially automotive manufacturers. 64 different products are produced with various routings through 14 workstations in the plant. Being a Tier 2 company, these products are then sent to Tier 1 firms and finally reach the leading vehicle manufacturers. Nowadays, increasing competition, changing customer demands, and quality targets bring the necessity of restructuring internal processes. In this regard, Sahin Metal plans to rearrange the existing machine layout to minimize the distance traveled between departments by taking into account the material flow. This study aims to determine an efficient machine layout design by implementing analytical approaches. The study is started by visiting the production facility and meeting with the company's engineers to determine the project roadmap. Following that, the data collection process is initiated, and ABC analysis is performed to define product classes. After this identification, two approaches are utilized simultaneously. The Hollier method is employed to find a logical machine arrangement. In addition, a mathematical model based on the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) is developed to obtain the optimum machine layout. The developed integer nonlinear model is solved by CONOPT using GAMS software under various scenarios. Finally, these results are compared with the existing system, and a convenient layout design is proposed to the company.Publication Metadata only Arteriovenous Fistula Self-Care Behaviors in Patients Receiving Hemodialysis Treatment: Association With Health Literacy and Self-Care Agency(Sage Publications Ltd., 2022) Bülbül, Elif; Ayvaz, Meryem Yıldız; Yeni, Tuğba; TÜREN, SEVDA; Efil, SevdaBackground: Arteriovenous fistula-related self-care behaviors, self-care agency and health literacy are important for vascular access patency, which is vital in the continuation of hemodialysis treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine the arteriovenous fistula-related self-care behaviors of patients receiving chronic hemodialysis treatment and the relationship between these behaviors and their health literacy and self-care agency levels. Methods: In this descriptive correlational study, the data were collected from 216 chronic hemodialysis patients. Results: The rate of the patients who had good self-care behaviors levels was 83.96%. The sociodemographic variables that were significantly related to AVF-related self-care behaviors were education, employment status and age. It was found that the patients who had had AVF for a longer time had better self-care behaviors regarding their management of symptoms and findings (p < 0.05). As the self-care agency of the patients (r = 0.612, p < 0.001) and their health literacy (r = 0.421, p < 0.001) increased, their AVF-related self-care behaviors also increased. Conclusion: Age, education status, health literacy and self-care agency were identified to affect AVF-related self-care behaviors.Publication Metadata only Assessment of Seismic Demand and Damping of a Reinforced Concrete Building After CFRP Jacketing of Columns(Techno-Press, 2022) KOÇAK, PINAR İNCİ; Göksu, Çağier; Töre, Erkan; Binbir, Ergun; Ateş, Ali Osman; İlki, AlperWhile the lateral confinement provided by an FRP jacket to a concrete column is passive in nature, confinement is activated when the concrete expands due to additional compression stresses or significant shear deformations. This characteristic of FRP jacketing theoretically leads to similar initial stiffness properties of FRP retrofitted buildings as the buildings without retrofit. In the current study, to validate this theoretical assumption, the initial stiffness characteristics, and thus, the potential seismic demands were investigated through forced vibration tests on two identical full-scale substandard reinforced concrete buildings with or without FRP retrofit. Power spectral density functions obtained using the acceleration response data captured through forced vibration tests were used to estimate the modal characteristics of these buildings. The test results clearly showed that the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of the buildings are quite similar. Since the seismic demand is controlled by the fundamental vibration modes, it is confirmed using vibration-based full-scale tests that the seismic demands of RC buildings remain unchanged after CFRP jacketing of columns. Furthermore, the damping characteristics were also found similar for both structures.Publication Restricted Assessment of the Correlation Between Weight Status and the Frequency of Dietician Interviews in Sleeve Gastrectomy Patients(Springer, 2021) BATAR, NAZLI; SEVDİN, SEZEN; Güçlü, Duygu; KERMEN, SEDAPurpose The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the weight status of sleeve gastrectomy patients during the first two postoperative years and the frequency of dietician interviews. Materials and Methods This was a retrospective cross-sectional study, and the subjects were patients who had surgery at a special obesity clinic, Bariatriklab, in Istanbul, Turkey, between February 01, 2014, and February 01, 2018.The mean age +/- standard deviation of the participants was 38.8 +/- 11.9 years. The mean body mass index (BMI) +/- standard deviation was 44.2 +/- 6.1 kg/m(2)preoperatively. The preoperative (pre-op) and 12-, 18-, and 24-month postoperative (post-op) weights and the frequency of interviews with dieticians for 2 years after the operation were collected, and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS ver. 23.0. Results A total of 247 laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) patients, 161 women (65.2%) and 86 men (34.8%), were evaluated in this study. As the frequency of dietician interviews increased in the first year, the amount of excess weight loss (EWL) increased in the second year (p < 0.01). In addition, as the frequency of dietician interviews increased in the second year, the amount of EWL in the second year decreased (p < 0.01). The frequency of dietician counseling among participants who did not experience weight loss between 12 and 24 months was significantly higher than that among those who experienced weight loss (p < 0.05). Conclusion It should not be forgotten that bariatric surgery requires teamwork, and patients should be cared for with an interdisciplinary approach. Accordingly, the housing problem is a social phenomenon, which is related to both individual and societal requirements about finding the adequate dwelling opportunities. This research creates a discussion about social aspects of housing and analysis of Turkish housing history from this perspective. The conceptual background includes the subjects about spatial characteristics of individual and society interaction according to daily life routines and the public-domestic space hierarchy in residential areas. This research has two analysis phases: content analysis and spatial analysis. Firstly, the changes in the housing development in Turkey is explained in the historical context via the content analysis of the Arkitekt Journal. In the second phase of analysis, Turkish housing examples which were selected according to the content analysis are spatially analyzed with general features and public-private space hierarchy. The spatial characteristics of examples are evaluated according to social and built environment characteristics in order to explain the impact of shared spaces in residential areas. The main discussion is developed according to the changes in shared space use of different periods in relation to housing decisions of their era. In order to examine the housing developments in Turkey, the term social aspects of housing provides the opportunities to identify the different factors, which have effects on social and built environment characteristics of the residential areas and the relevance to socially sustainable housing developments.Publication Metadata only Cyberbullying Detection Through Deep Learning: A Case Study of Turkish Celebrities on Twitter(IOS Press, 2023) Karadağ, Bulut; AKBULUT, AKHAN; Zaim, Abdul HalimOne of the ways that celebs maintain their fame in the modern era is by posting updates and photos to social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Comments left on their posts, however, expose them to cyberbullying. Cyberbullying, as a form of electronic device-based harassment, negatively impacts the lives of individuals. Thirty famous people from the fields of acting, art, music, politics, sports, and writing were chosen for this research. These notable figures include the top five Twitter followers of Turkey in each demographic. Between December 2019 and December 2020, comment responses for each celebrity were collated. Using the Deep Learning model, we were able to detect abuse content with an accuracy of 89%. Additionally, the percentage of celebrities exposed to cyberbullying by group was presented.Publication Metadata only Determination of Factors Affecting Time in Therapeutic Range in Patients on Warfarin Therapy(Sage Publications Inc., 2023) TÜREN, SEVDA; Türen, SelahattinBackground The effectiveness and safety of warfarin depend on maintaining an international normalized ratio (INR) within the therapeutic range. Time in Therapeutic Range (TTR) is defined as the percentage of time a patient's INR is within the therapeutic range. Objective We sought to determine the factors affecting good TTR in patients on warfarin therapy. Methods This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted in a single tertiary care center. Good anticoagulation control was defined as TTR >= 65%. Results The study population consisted of 518 patients. The mean age was 57.6 +/- 12.3 (19-87) and 54.4% of the patients were female. 47.5% patients achieved good anticoagulation control (TTR >= 65%). The mean Medication Adherence Report Scale (MARS) score was significantly higher in patients with good TTR (23.5 +/- 1.9 vs. 22.8 +/- 2.1, p = .002). Only 40.2% of the patients received education on warfarin. In multivariable analyses, the duration of warfarin therapy >10 years (OR: 2.27, 95% CI: 1.34-3.84, p = .002) and MARS score (OR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.09-1.35, p < .001) were found to be the independent predictors of the good anticoagulation control. Conclusion Duration of warfarin therapy >10 years and MARS score were the independent predictors of good anticoagulation control.Publication Metadata only Development of Textile Nanocomposites With Thermal Energy Storage Capability(Natl Inst Science Communication-Niscair, 2021) Önder, Emel; SARIER, NİHALIn this study, textile-based composites with dynamic heat storage capability have been designed and developed, in addition to their existing passive insulation capacity. First, poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN) shell and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG1000 or PEG1500) cores are produced by coaxial electrospinning. Then, these are incorporated into felt based composite structures, which demonstrate enhanced thermal properties as well as buffering function against temperature changes in the environment. The thermal energy absorption and release capacities of the felt composites including PANPEG1000 or PAN-PEG1500 nanowebs are measured as high as 81 Jg(-1) between 33 degrees C and 46 degrees C, and 48 Jg(-1) between 46 degrees C and 54 degrees C respectively. Felt composites, combined with PAN-PEG nanowebs offer forthcoming production applications in the field of dynamic thermal management in various industries.Publication Restricted Double Skin Facade Assessment by Fuzzy AHP and Comparison with AHP(Taylor & Francis Ltd., 2021) BOSTANCIOĞLU, ESRAA double-skin facade (DSF) has been widely used in recent years for its thermal and aesthetic properties. DSFs can also control wind pressure, manage natural ventilation and provide noise insulation. This study aims at providing an assessment of DSF to building designers and builders with their selection of facade systems. The decisions taken on the selection of facade systems are complicated ones based on multiple criteria. A decision must be taken only after many criteria are evaluated. While certain criteria such as heat insulation, noise insulation, and cost can be easily quantified, it is difficult to measure subjective criteria such as aesthetics. Therefore, the study aims at reflecting the experience of professionals who have applied such facade systems, to be able to evaluate all assessment criteria and facade systems. Architects or engineers working in the construction sector assessed criteria and DSF alternatives by replying to a questionnaire. Fuzzy set theory aids in measuring the ambiguity of concepts that are associated with human being's subjective judgment. Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) has been applied to many assessment problems. It is used for the assessment of DSF in this study. AHP was used for the assessment of DSF in our previous study. The World Health Organization has prepared an action plan to stop the increase in diabetes and obesity by 2025. Objectives: This study was conducted to assess the effect of pilates on body composition and some biochemical parameters in women with T2DM on a high-complex-carbohydrate diabetic diet or a low-carbohydrate/high-monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) diet. Methods: This experimental study was conducted on 120 woman patients with T2DM, referring to the Fatih Medical Park Hospital's Internal Medicine Department, Istanbul, Turkey, between December 2018 and June 2019. Participants were divided into 4 groups and were followed up for 12 weeks. The mean participants' age was 41.67 +/- 3.83 years. The first group received a low-carbohydrate and high MUFA (LC, MUFA) diet, the second group received a low-carbohydrate and a high-MUFA diet and did pilates (LC, MUFA + PL), the third group received a higher complex carbohydrate (HCC) diet, and the fourth group took the HCC diet and did pilates (HCC + PL). Results: According to the applied intervention method, there were significant differences between the preliminary and final measurements of bodymass index, body fat percentage, muscle mass, and fasting blood glucose, insulin, HbA1c, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglyceride (TG) values (P < 0.05). In this study, only an increase in body muscle composition of the women in the LC, MUFA + PL group was found significant (P < 0.05). The highest decrease in body fat ratio was determined again in the LC, MUFA + PL group (P < 0.05). HDLlevels of the women who did pilates increased significantly than other groups (P < 0.05). Conclusions: In the treatment of diabetes, the patient should be evaluated with a multidisciplinary team. Also, it has been observed that DM's judgments are affected by those of other DMs in the group. This is defined as social influence (SI). Social Influence Network (SIN) is useful especially when there is incomplete preference information. In this paper, a proposed model has been used to demonstrate the effect of seed value choice in completion process of missing fuzzy information given by DMs.Publication Restricted Epibrassinolide-Induced Autophagy Occurs in an Atg5-Independent Manner Due to Endoplasmic Stress Induction in MEF Cells(Springer, 2020) Adacan, Kaan; YERLİKAYA, PINAR OBAKAN; Çoker-Gürkan, Ajda; Kaya, Resul İsmail; Palavan-Ünsal, Narcin; ARISAN, ELİF DAMLAEpibrassinolide (EBR), a polyhydroxysteroid belongs to plant growth regulator family, brassinosteroids and has been shown to have a similar chemical structure to mammalian steroid hormones. Our findings indicated that EBR could trigger apoptosis in cancer cells via induction of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, caused by protein folding disturbance in the ER. Normal cells exhibited a remarkable resistance to EBR treatment and avoid from apoptotic cell death. The unfolded protein response clears un/misfolded proteins and restore ER functions. When stress is chronic, cells tend to die due to improper cellular functions. To understand the effect of EBR in non-malign cells, mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) cells were investigated in detail for ER stress biomarkers, autophagy, and polyamine metabolism in this study. Evolutionary conserved autophagy mechanism is a crucial cellular process to clean damaged organelles and protein aggregates through lysosome under the control of autophagy-related genes (ATGs). Cells tend to activate autophagy to promote cell survival under stress conditions. Polyamines are polycationic molecules playing a role in the homeostasis of important cellular events such as cell survival, growth, and, proliferation. The administration of PAs has been markedly extended the lifespan of various organisms via inducing autophagy and inhibiting oxidative stress. Our data indicated that ER stress is induced following EBR treatment in MEF cells as well as MEF Atg5(-/-) cells. In addition, autophagy is activated following EBR treatment by targeting PI3K/Akt/mTOR in wildtype (wt) cells. However, EBR-induced autophagy targets ULK1 in MEF cells lacking Atg5 expression. Besides, EBR treatment depleted the PA pool in MEF cells through the alterations of metabolic enzymes. The administration of Spd with EBR further increased autophagic vacuole formation. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted with 198 elderly participants. Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was used to evaluate nutritional status. The frequency of dietary intake was assessed using the Elderly Diet Index (EDI) score. RESULTS: The median age of study population was 76.0 years. The median EDI score was 27.0, moreover, only 27.3% of the study population had moderate or high diet quality. The results of the univariate analysis revealed that having an average or a poor appetite reduced the diet quality in the elderly which was statistically significantly (p = 0.010 and p = 0.019, respectively), and each point increase in the MNA score statistically significantly increased the chance of moderate/good diet quality by 1.16 times. However, there is no consensus among the scholars whether military expenditures trigger economic growth, productivity, and other macroeconomic indicators. Such arguments are mainly due to unclear results obtained from the existing studies, in which the complex relationships between military expenditures and macroeconomics are not fully incorporated. Considering the bidirectional and nonlinear relationships among macroeconomic indicators and complex feedback mechanisms, a system dynamics (SD) model for examining the impacts of military expenditures on economic productivity in Turkey is proposed. The proposed SD model aims to reflect the complex environment surrounding the military spending–economic productivity nexus and to analyze the feedback structures that lead to miscellaneous consequences with delays. A stock–flow model is developed to represent the complex nonlinear relationships and causalities between the variables. Data from SIPRI, the World Bank, and several local statistical sources covering the years 2009–2018 are utilized to simulate the existing case, warfare in neighbors, economic shrinkage scenarios, and the combination of the latter two. The results obtained from the scenarios suggest that short fixes such as importing military products instead of national investments give rise to chronic issues like continual dependence on foreign supply, hence, leading to decrease in overall economic growth. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to integrate SD methodology with military expenditure and economic productivity analysis.
