Publication Embargo An analysis of educational faculty students’ research self-efficacy in terms of a number of variables(Elsevier, 2015) Saral, Duygu Gizem; ÖZDOĞAN, DİDEM; 104052; 149072Enabling students to acquire the research abilities is an educational issue. The target of education is to raise individuals with research-oriented attitudes and behaviours. Sustaining the research activities requires that, in addition to the compatibility of research environments, individuals and institutions to conduct the research have the competence facilitating them to do the research. Therefore, the need was felt to determine educational faculty students’ levels of research self-efficacy. This research examines whether or not educational faculty students’ research self-efficacy differs on the basis of gender, university, department, and taking or not taking the Scientific Research Methods course. The research sample was composed of 532 volunteering students attending the Psychological Counseling and Guidance, Elementary School Mathematics Teaching, Science Teaching, and Computer and Teaching Technologies departments of the educational faculties of Amasya and Eskişehir Osmangazi Universities. The research data were obtained through a 43-item, 5-pointed Likert scale of Research Competence (Büyüköztürk, 1997), with a reliability coefficient of α=0,89 . In the analysis of the data, the frequencies and the percentages for the variables were calculated, the one-way variance analysis (ANOVA) and the significance test for the difference between two averages (the t-test) were employed. When differences were found between the groups in consequence of the variance analysis, between which groups the differences were available was found via the Scheffe test. Consequently, it was found that educational faculty students’ research self-efficacy differed according to department, and to whether they took the Scientific Research Methods course; but that it did not differ according to gender or university.Publication Metadata only Analysis of Young Learners’ and Teenagers’ Attitudes to English Language Learning(2017) Arda, Seda; Doyran, Feyza; 227369; 159249Attitudes begin to occur with the child’s birth and develop with the effects of his/her parents, peers, and the environment (Brown, 1994). Along with that, the attitudes have a significant effect on how much language learners become interested in learning (Inal & Evin, 2006). That’s to say, each language learner has the potential to develop different kinds of attitudes towards language learning. The present study focused on the attitudes of Turkish young learners and teenagers towards English Language Learning (ELL). It aimed to find out whether the attitudes of young learners change when they begin to be teenagers and whether the results correlate with the assumptions. If they correlate, the possible reasons behind that were tried to be named for these changes. Moon (2011) claims that compared to young learners, teenagers are inclined to lose their desire for language learning and they could be less motivated. In line with the statement of Moon (2011), the current study displayed that teenagers began to develop more negative attitudes towards ELL, losing their enthusiasm and motivation for ELL for various reasons. The implications of these results on education settings in Turkey were discussed and commented at the end of the paper.Publication Embargo Are they problem learners or students with learning disabilities? What do teachers know about LD?(2013) Doyran, Feyza; Canca, Irene; 159249This research investigated the level of awareness and existing knowledge processed by general education instructors and counselors in a private school system regarding learning disabilities (LD) in Istanbul, Turkey. General education instructors who teach students from the age range of 5-19 in all subjects including English as Foreign Language practitioners as well as counselors who work with this population are the focus of this study. The main purpose of this study is to elicit current knowledge levels of learning disabilities awareness among teachers currently practicing in private school systems. The subsidiary purpose is to discern if learning disabilities in general or the targeting of specific disabilities should be the focus of training workshops and seminars. This study, therefore, is the first step of a needs analysis on this specific topic. One hundred participants who are currently working in this private school sector have completed a 25 question survey which was developed and piloted by Dr. Sheila Saravanabhaven of Virginia State University and Dr. RC Saravanabhaven of Howard State University and published in the International Journal of Special Education (vol. 25, no. 3, 2010). Permission for its use has been granted with the original survey to be administered. Additionally, the counselors currently administering to this populous were interviewed and asked specific questions regarding their preparation in the area of learning disabilities. The quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS and for the open-ended questions content analysis was applied. The analysis pointed to some discrepancies among awareness levels of educators with the focus of examination on pre-service courses required while pursuing a degree in Education as well as professional development exposure regarding learning disabilities awareness. The results of this study together with its implications on teaching and learning process show that in order to gain more awareness there is a need for teachers of all subjects to go through training workshops and seminars focusing on various types of learning disabilities which would eventually affect their student body. Special Education courses in the undergraduate teacher education programs should also put more emphasis on these issues.Publication Metadata only Career Stress and Psychological Well-Being in Emerging Adulthood: The Moderating Role of Close Relationships(2019-11-15) Erol, Sena; demir, ilkay; Atmacı, Kader; Battal, Elif Nur; 302592; 184598; 299767Previous research linked career stress and poor amount of close relationships to negative psychological outcomes; however few studies focused on moderators in these relationships. The aim of the present study was to test the moderating role of family relations and romantic relationship status on the relationship between career stress and psychological well-being among emerging adults. Participants of the study were 270 university students (213 female; Mage=20,7; SD=2,1) from four universities in Istanbul. The Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults- Short Form (SELSA-S), PERMA-Profiler and a personal information form were used to collect the data. A three step hierarchical regression analysis was conducted in order to test the significance of the main and interaction effects in the model. The results of regression model revealed significant main effects of career stress, family relations, romantic relationship status and age on psychological well-being. Furthermore, results showed that family relations moderated the relationships between career stress and psychological well-being, while romantic relationship status yielded no significant interaction effects. In order to further examine the significant interaction effects in the model, a moderation analysis was conducted. The results indicate that less loneliness within the family, buffer the negative impact of career stress on psychological well-being.Publication Metadata only Challenges of the Professionalization of Department Heads in Higher Education: A Qualitative Study in Turkey(Turkish Education Assoc, Kızılırmak Caddesi No 8, Kocatepe, Ankara 00000, Turkey, 2016-04) Dimici, Kadriye; Seggie, Fatma Nevra; Caner, Havva Ayşe; HACIFAZLIOĞLU, ÖZGE; 161702; 145163; 111622; 123268Professionalization of department heads is a relatively recent concept of interest in the higher education administration domain and as such few studies in the extant literature address the training needs of department heads and how they become more professionalized in their work. The aim of this study is to address this gap in the literature by examining the perceptions of department heads working in public and private universities in Turkey regarding the level of professionalization in their roles as leaders of departments. The authors of this study use a qualitative approach to interview fourteen participants from four universities in Istanbul. Thematic analysis is used to determine the main and sub-themes based on the statements of the participants. The findings of this study suggest that being a department head is not a professionalized field in Turkey and the department heads generally express negative opinions about the roles because of a variety of problems that occur as a consequence of some problems related to the position. In the light of the findings, there may be a need to start a discussion as to how department heads are chosen and trained in both public and private universities in Turkey.Publication Metadata only Conceptual analysis of adolescent romance from adolescent and adult perspectives I(2014) Nemlioğlu, Sevgi Birsel; Çok, Figen; 55785; 6480Publication Embargo Counseling and Guidance Understandings of Guidance Teachers and Their Attitudes Towards Counseling and Guidance(2015) Demir Güdül, Meryem; Can, Gürhan; 53476; 4656In this study, it was aimed to study the relationships between counseling and guidance understanding of guidance teachers, who are in charge of giving counseling and guidance service to a class, and their attitudes towards counseling and guidance, and how their understanding of counseling and guidance and their attitudes towards counseling and guidance differentiate in terms of various variables. Within the framework of relational screening model, the Counseling and Guidance Inventory (Kepçeoğlu, 1975) and the Guidance Counselor Attitude Scale (Demir, 2010) were used in the study, which was conducted with 595 guidance teachers working in primary and secondary education institutions in Eskişehir. As a result of the study, it was determined that there was a moderate level relationship (r= .44) between guidance teachers’ understanding level of counseling and guidance and their attitude levels towards counseling and guidance. The female guidance teachers were found to have higher understanding of counseling and guidance and attitudes towards counseling and guidance than those of the male teachers. It was also determined that the guidance teachers’ understanding of counseling and guidance and their attitudes towards counseling and guidance did not differentiate in terms of branch. On the other hand, the guidance teachers who attended the in-service training about counseling and guidance were found to have more positive attitudes only towards counseling and guidance than the ones who didn’t attend the in-service training, whereas the guidance teachers working in primary education were found to have higher levels of both counseling and guidance understanding and attitudes towards counseling and guidance than the ones working in secondary education in terms of the stage of education the teachers work in. Similarly, the counselors who had 1-9 and 10-19 years of seniority had higher counseling and guidance understandings than the ones who had 20 and more years of seniority. The findings obtained as a result of the study were discussed in the light of relevant literature.Publication Embargo Curriculum Development Based on Students’ Language Needs at a Vocational High School(2017) Aktaş, Nezaket Birgül; Doyran, Feyza; 159249The main goal of the study was to investigate the English language needs of 10th grade students at a Vocational High School and evaluate the existing language program to determine whether the current curriculum, syllabus, materials, and teaching activities meet their needs. The secondary aim was to propose a new curriculum in the light of the findings. Both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, based on questionnaires and an interview, were used in this study. Four hundred and twenty six students (23 females and 403 males) attending different specific study fields; namely motor, metal, computer, electric, and eight English language teachers at the school participated in this study. The results indicated that students would like to master their speaking and listening language skills through technological equipment, technical books, visual and authentic materials. In addition, both students and teachers agree that an ESP course should be implemented in this school because the existing curriculum does not meet the needs of the students.Publication Metadata only Development of a scale for students in evaluating 2017 information technology and software curriculum(ESKISEHIR OSMANGAZI UNIV, FAC EDUCATION, ESKISEHIR OSMANGAZI UNIV, FAC EDUCATION, ESKISEHIR, 26480, TURKEY, 2019-10) Demir, Elif Buğra Kuzu; GÜNDÜZ, GÜLTEN FERYALThe purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable instrument measuring the views of secondary school 5th grade students on the curriculum of 2017 Information Technology and Software (ITS) course. The study was carried out with 528 5th grade students (15 for pilot application, 320 for exploratory factor analysis (EFA), 203 for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) studying in the spring semester of 2017-2018 school year. Implementation of the scale was realized with participants who were determined through the combination of criterion and convenience sampling. In order to determine the content validity and face validity of the scale, expert opinions were obtained, while both EFA and CFA were performed to assess the construct validity of the scale's measures. Analyses revealed one-factor structure which sheltered 30 items, which explained 39.92 percent of the total variance with a high internal consistency coefficient. The CFA on the one-factor structure revealed acceptable fit indices as well. Based on these findings, it could be concluded that the scale is an instrument that produces valid and reliable measures, and that can be used to determine fifth grade students' views on the curriculum evaluation of 2017 ITS course. For further studies, the scale can be implemented to a random sample form the population of 5th grade students to reveal their views on the curriculum and studies can be conducted in order to investigate in terms of different variables.Publication Metadata only Development of the Teacher Counselling and Guidance Attitude Scale(2010) Demir Güdül, Meryem; 53476Publication Embargo Evaluating a graduate program of English language teacher education(2014) Keşli Dollar, Yeşim; Tekiner, Aylin; Doyran, Feyza; 43525; 43574; 159249This study evaluated the MA-TEFL Program at a foundation university. The name of the computer lesson which was started to be taught in high schools in mid-1980’s was changed and it began to be taught as a subject in lower levels of education in Turkey. Taking into account the 21st century learning skills, it is inevitable to teach information technologies and skills at all levels of education starting from preschool period. Changes have been made in the scope, name and compulsory I elective courses of the computer course curriculum (MEB ÎGM, 1998) taught as an elective course in secondary schools since 1998- 1999 academic year. Information Technology and Software (ITS) course curriculum was last changed in 2017; the altered curriculum of this course, which is compulsory in the 5th and 6th grades of secondary school, has been gradually implemented since the 2017-2018 academic year. Program evaluation is the last step of program development and the element required to make a decision about the effectiveness, efficiency and usefulness of a developed program by considering certain criteria. The findings of the evaluation of a program provide guidance to educators and decision-makers on the termination, continuation or correction of the program. Although there are studies on the evaluation of secondary school information technologies and software course curriculum in previous years (Durdukoca & Arıbaş, 2011; Erçetin & Durak, 2017; Uzgur & Aykaç, 2016; Akbıyık & Seferoğlu, 2012; Baran, Akpınar, Karakoyun & Koca, 2016; Çengel) Karakuş, Çimen Çoşğun & Lal, 2015); there are only a few studies in the field that evaluate the version of the 2017 ITS draft curriculum before implementation (Information Technology Educators Association, 2017; Gündüz & Kuzu Demir, 2018; Mercimek & îliç, 2017). In this respect, this study is one of the first comprehensive studies to evaluate the 2017 ITS program after its implementation. Based on these problems and necessities, the general purpose of this study is to evaluate the 2017 BTY curriculum according to the views of teachers and students. For this general purpose, answers for the following questions were sought. 1) According to the opinions of the teachers who took 5th grade ITS course, what is the level of reaching the criteria foreseen for the; 1.1. Acquisitions 1.2. Content 1.3. Teaching-learning process 1.4. Evaluation 2) According to the opinions of the 5th grade students, what is the level of reaching the criteria foreseen for the; 1.2. Acquisitions 1.2. Content 1.3. Teaching-learning process 1.4. Evaluation 3) Do the students’ opinions about ICT course curriculum differ according to their gender and level of computer use? Method There are many types of program evaluation according to the philosophy, purpose, target group and measurement tools used in the evaluation. In this research, the discrepancy model of Provus which is one of the goal-based program evaluation models was used as the program evaluation model. In this model, an educational program is analysed according to the differences between standards, expectations and achievements within the dimensions of objectives, content, methods and evaluation and program is determined the as a result of the obtained findings (Worthen & Sanders, 1987). In order to have a holistic perspective on the evaluation of the ITS curriculum, this study will utilize mixed methods sequential exploratory design. According to Creswell (2003), the mixed methods sequential exploratory design consists of two stages. In the first stage, the quantitative data that are prioritized in the study are collected and analyzed. In the light of thefindings, the second stage, qualitative data collection is started in order to explain deeply the quantitative data obtained from the first stage (Creswell, 2014; Creswell & Plano, 2007). The study aimed to evaluate the curriculum of 2017 IT course with a holistic approach by the help of the views of students and teachers on the curriculum of 2017 IT course. Within this context, the research population of the study was determined as the fifth grade students, and the IT teachers in the secondary schools located in central districts of Eskişehir. Accordingly, the sampling method differed with regard to the characteristics of the participants. The students were selected through a cluster sampling method. The data from the 815 students (female=409, male=395) were collected through a single factor valid and reliable scale developed by the researcher, which explains a percentage of 39,917% of the total variance with a high internal consistency. A questionnaire developed by the researchers was fulfilled by 39 teachers. The data were analysed through both descriptive and inferential statistics with the help of SPSS 22.0 package programme. Obtained Results The findings showed that the views of the students related to the evaluation of 2017 ITS curriculum was significantly positive, which significantly differed with level of use but not with gender. As for the students’ scale, the highest mean score of an item is 4,20, which the students mentioned that what they had learned in the course provided them to use IT effectively and correctly. Another item is “What I have learned in the course provides me to use visual expressions (schemes, arrows, etc.) step-by-step while writing a computer program”, which had a considerably high mean score of 4.19. The lowest mean scores of two items were respectively 3,72 and 3,82, which the students mentioned that the course activities were related to their daily life and what they had learned in the course develops their skills in expressing themselves in their mother tongue. Findings also revealed that the views of the teachers related to the evaluation of 2017 ITS curriculum is significantly positive as well, which significantly did not differ with gender, level of education, period of service but differed with the satisfactory level of mandatory and voluntary in-service training. Teachers who mentioned that the in-service training given to the teachers both for mandatory and voluntarily were satisfactory had more positive views related to the evaluation of 2017 ITS curriculum. As for the students’ scale, the highest mean score of an item is 4,54, which the teachers expressed that the 2017 ITS curriculum improved their students’ research skills. Other items which had considerably high mean scores of 4.33 were “The curriculum develops students' information technology and software skills” and “The curriculum develops students'computational thinking skills”. The lowest mean scores of two items were respectively 3,21 and 3,34, which the teachers indicated that the time allocated to the Digital Product Creation and Computational Thinking units in the program were sufficient.Publication Embargo Examining University Students’ Self-Compassion and Compassionate Love Levels in Terms of Perceived Parental Attitudes(2018-11) Eker, Halime; Kaya, Mehmet; 277021; 136841The aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between parental attitudes perceived by the students, self-compassion and compassionate love levels, and differences occur in parental attitudes, self-compassion and compassionate love levels according to various variables. The research was conducted with 326 university students studying in different departments of Sakarya University Faculty of Education. Parental Attitude Scale (PAS), Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), the Compassionate Love Scale (CLS) and Information Collection Form were applied in the study. The research data were analyzed by correlation, T-test and One Way (ANOVA). The results of the research revealed that the self-compassion level of the students who perceived the parents' attitudes as democratic was high, whereas the self-compassion level of the students who perceived the parental attitudes as authoritarian and protective-demanding was low. It was also found out that the students who perceived their parents' attitudes as authoritarian and protective-demanding had high compassionate love levels. The present study demonstrated the authoritarian and protective-demanding parental attitudes perceived by university students differed according to sex, the democratic parental attitude differed in terms of the number of siblings, and the compassionate love differed in terms of gender. It was revealed that there was a negative relationship between self-compassion and compassionate love.Publication Metadata only Examining University Students’ Self-Compassion and Compassionate Love Levels in Terms Of Perceived Parental Attitudes(2012) Kaya, Mehmet; Eker, Halime; 136841; 277021Publication Metadata only Ideological tendencies of the teachers about the causes of vandalism in schools and solution proposals(2010) Nemlioğlu, Sevgi Birsel; Atak, Hasan; 55785; 48704Publication Metadata only Perception and Attitudes of Teachers about Counseling(2011) Can, G.; Demir Güdül, Meryem; 53476Contemporary education systems aim at not only cognitive development but also social, psychological and physical development of students. And this holistic development is only possible with the implementation of effective counseling and guidance services at schools. In this context, teachers are required to be voluntarily involved in school guidance services and to support these services. Reaching to the expected outcomes is impossible without teachers’ support and participation. In other words, making contributions to school guidance services depends on the nature of teachers’ perception and attitudes. Not being able to develop efficient guidance understanding means not knowing fundamental concepts and principles of guidance. At the same time, teachers with negative attitudes toward guidance services could not provide guidance services despite their aspirations. In this framework, investigating the guidance perception and attitudes of teachers who are critical elements of school guidance team is very important before starting guidance services at school. Thus, this research was carried out with 739 teachers (with guidance responsibilities) working at 33 primary schools and 9 secondary schools in Eskisehir, Turkey. Data about participants’ counseling perceptions was collected by means of Guidance Understanding Inventory (Öztemel, 2000) and data related with participants’ attitudes toward guidance was collected by Teacher Counselling and Guidance Attitude Inventory (Demir, 2010). As a result, it was found that guidance perception and attitudes of the teachers responsible for guidance services at classes were significantly high, there is a mediocre relationship (r=.43) between guidance perception and attitudes of the teachers. The results of the one way MANOVA analysis indicated that guidance perception levels and attitudes of participants about guidance differ significantly in some respects.Publication Metadata only Problem Solving Abilities of Pre-Service Teachers(2013) Berkant, Hasan Güner; Eren, İsmail; ÖZDOĞAN, DİDEM; 55836; 149072Publication Metadata only Problem Solving Abilities of Pre-service Teachers(2012) Berkant, Hasan Güner; Eren, İsmail; Reyhanlıoğlu, Didem; 55836; 149072Publication Metadata only Problems of Novice Scholl Principals(2019-07-09) Keskinkılıç Kara, Sultan Bilge; 122476The aim of this study is to determine the problems faced by the novice school principals in Başakşehir district of Istanbul and to present the solution suggestions of them. The participants of this study, which were used as a qualitative research method, consisted of 60 novice school principals. The data collected by using semi-structured interview forms were analyzed with descriptive analysis method. The problems experienced by the novice school principals and the solutions of these problems were resolved by determining the dimensions of the school administration, other managers, the education process, teachers, students, ministries, provincial, district managers, and parents and by thematizing the answers given by the principals. As a result of this research, it was revealed that the problems such as low level of professional competence, slowness of bureaucratic works, negative attitudes towards school administrators, problems in rewarding system, problems in communication, inadequacy of legal regulations, problems in employee rights, problem of merit system, having to deal with unfounded complaints, paperwork increasing workload, other institutions and organizations avoiding taking responsibility, insufficiency of physical and material impossibilities, problems caused by parents, insufficient in-service training, problems with use of buildings, lack of belonging to teachers and lack of belonging, lack of sense of belonging and discipline had negative effects on school principals. It is determined that novice principals have expectations about extension of legal rights by new legislative arrangements, increasing in-service trainings before starting principal position, awards and performance system innovations, sanctions against unfounded complaints, increasing training for families, improvement in personal rights, and merit-based assignment in appointments.Publication Metadata only Professional Morality Perceptions of Turkish Teachers(2012-12) Doyran, Feyza; 159249
