The novel was adapted for the cinema the same year and directed by John Ford. Proving welcome in cinema circles and taking its place as a master work in film history, it was one of the few films with radical political connotations hitherto produced by Hollywood. Nevertheless, this cinematic version of the Great Depression narrative has not escaped criticisms, which have been aimed chiefly at aspects of its content that diverge from its parent work. Compared with the novel, the film has been considered more conservative and optimistic, on the grounds that, although the novel emphasizes the class conflict and portrays the Joads as only one of the many suffering families, the film exerts a redundant focus on the family and commends family values: divergences considered to be supported by the visual style of the film. In this article, while recalling Ford’s The Grapes of Wrath, I revisit the above-mentioned criticisms and reassess them in relation to the parenting novel. In doing so, this article also aims to evoke the ongoing economic recession that influences the masses all over the world and the recurrent, unchanging and inevitable outcomes that such crises of capitalism bring for its victims.Publication Open Access A Coefficient Inequality for Convex Functions(İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi Yayınları, 2002-04) POLATOĞLU, YAŞARBiz bu makalede ' A characterization for convex functions of complex order (Ist. Conjugal union, which has the characteristics of a social institution in our ime, benefits from the opportunities of technology in direct proportion to globalization and new technological developments, while trying to preserve its traditional features at the same time. In this transformation process, various media organs, socialization agents on media tools such as marriage websites play a significant role. In this study, the process of how conjugal union, which is shaped by the direct influence of popular culture, goes through a change in the direction of global market mentality will be discussed and a research will be made on the basis of social media agents.Publication Open Access A New Film Language: “Amateur Video”(The Turkish Online Journal of Design Art and Communication, 2012-04) Künüçen, Hale; Olguntürk, Kağan; TR3486; TR161573Film making has been a very expensive hobby for ameteurs from the day it was discovered. Also it has not been taken as a professional tool for years. Especially after Griffth’s approaches on camera movements, camera angles, framing techniques such as medium shot or close-up. The quality level of filmmaking between amateurs and professionals has been highly spread. Today, by the help of new technologies these two fields got closer. Now we can make near-professional films by using amateur equipments; we can edit them at our home computer, we can even prepare some music at home by using the help of some softwares. Also we can freely share it by using websites such as Youtube, Vimeo or some others. So for amateurs its not only easy and cheap to produce a film but also it is easy and cheap to distribute it. The number of amateur movies produced today are much more then professional movies. The enormous number of amateur productions also affected the audience and created “a new way” of story telling like shaked camera movements, deficient lighting, grainy look. This way of story telling first was discomforting and disorienting for the audience, but later they got used to it. This also affected the professionals: lots of production firms started to make professional films which used ‘amateur way’ of story telling. This study intends to discuss this new way of telling a story and implications associated with this new approach. The discussion will focus on three selected professional films using this new approach, namely “District 9” (2009), “Cloverfield” (2008) and “Paranormal Activity” (2007). These films use jump-cuts, deficient lighting and grainy pictures, contrasting strongly with traditional way of story telling. Thus, the study will explore the important points of using editing applications, lighting, image composition and camera movements with their relationship to the existing cinematography, trying to find an explanation to this new perception of reality in digitalization.Publication Open Access A New Method for Increasing the Earthquake Safety of the Sturctures Seismic Isolation(İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi Yayınları, 2002-04) Karataş, HasanSelsmic isolation provides an excellent solution fort he earthquake safety of the structures . Publication Open Access A Preliminary Study on 'History' and 'Historiography' in Translation Studies(İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi Yayınları, 2003-06) Apak, FundagülBu araştırmada amaç, çeviribilimde 'tarih' ve 'tarih yazımı'na yönelik olarak yapılan bazı çalışmalarda 'çeviri tarihi'nin mi yoksa 'çeviri tarihi yazımı'nın mı incelendiğini sorgulamaktadır. Bu bağlamda ele alınacak çalışmaların 'çeviri tarihi' ve 'çeviri tarihi yazımı' konularına ne derece ışık tutuğunu araştıracak, yapılan karşılaştırmalarda elde edilen sonuçlardan yola çıkarak 'çeviri tarihi' ve 'çeviri tarihi yazımı'nda hangi çalışmanın yol gösterici olduğunu tespit etmeye çalışacağız. Bu tespitten hareketle oluşturulacak pilot çalışmada, 'çeviri tarihi' ve 'çeviri tarihi yazımı'nda yöntem kullanımı irdelenecektir. The aim of this study is to analyze some work in translation studies on the subjects of 'history' and 'historiography' and find out if they have questioned history of translation or historiography of translation. We will try to see how and to what extent these works shed a light on the concepts of 'history of translation' and 'historiography of translation'; and based on the results of these comparisons we will try to determine which work or works have the leading characteristics on these subjects. Building on these findings, methodology in 'history of translation' and 'historiography of translation' will be analyzed in a pilot study.Publication Open Access A Study On Spectral And Statistical Analysis Of Noisy Signals For Physical Processes(İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi Yayınları, 2006-12) Kaynaş, Tayfun; Şeker, SerhatIn this study, it is considered a sinusoidal signal with is third harmonic as well as the fundamental frequency adding the noise term, which is produced using a Gaussian random number generator. The Mongols' devastating attack on Iran took place in the early seventh century AH and resulted in the loss of many of our cultural heritage. Mongol rule and creation of Ilkhani family in Iran and Central Asia as well as the acceptance of Islam at the end of their rule and also the use of Iranian artists and arts would end in flourishing of architecture and its affiliates. Undoubtedly one of the most important surviving monuments of that period is the Dome of Soltaniyeh decorated by unmatched paintings on plaster, tiling, lattice brickwork, plaster and brick Mogharnas, plasters on fabric and inscriptions embellished with Quranic verses and traditional content. The current study which is a analytical/descriptive study, aimed at investigation of decorations of Ilkhaniera and its unmatched masterpiece of the Dome of Soltaniyieh.Publication Open Access A Survey on Operations Research Applications in Construction Management(İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi Yayınları, 2002-04) Yazgaç, Tülin; Özdamar, LinetIn today’s competitive world, construction companies should integrate the expertise of multiple disciplines to remain in the business. One such application is the development of virtual reality, which aspires to immerse the user within the system such that they feel more “present” within the portrayed virtual plane of existence than within their true reality. Many studies have developed a variety of approaches and methods on measuring immersion and presence in these systems, yet few have addressed the underlying technology for what it really is – namely communication technology – and evaluated the technology’s potential for immersion and presence before exposing the user to the virtual experience. Part of the issue lies in the difficulty in quantifying arguably subjective experiences such as immersion and presence. This study examines the existing literature on the definition and evaluation of immersion, presence, and virtual reality technologies, and aims to provide a theoretical framework through which virtual reality technology may be evaluated based on the human biological apparatus it appeals to. The framework is constructed on a modified version of the Media Naturalness Theory, which was selected as a basis due to the evolutionary support it provides in explaining our communication preferences. The framework may then be utilized to analyze prospective technologies for their potential to provide immersive experiences and incite presence in the users before any exposure or use has taken place, possibly providing further validity to any findings of post-exposure studies (such as with questionnaires so ubiquitous in the literature of the field).Publication Open Access A Video Projection Mapping Conceptual Design And Application: Yekpare(The Turkish Online Journal Of Design Art And Communication, 2011-07) Ekim, BernaCan recent developments in video projection techniques aid us in finding new ways of expressing our creativity and creative audio-visual works on a new surface other than the screen? Video Mapping is one of the newest video projection techniques that are used to turn almost any surface into a dynamic video display. The aim of video mapping is to create a physical illusion of images by combining audio-visual elements. Most of the mapping projects are used in fashion shows, corporate events, concerts and theatrical performances. Lately a new trend of video mapping system is being used on architectural and historical structures, buildings and displayed in public spaces to reach a wider audience. This paper will focus on 3 aspects of video mapping and its application; 1) the technical aspects of video mapping and its tools. 2) the conceptual development of the project YEKPARE and the application of video mapping on Haydarpasa Terminal within the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture events. 3) the feedback from the audiences who have experienced the performance and the effects of video mapping.Publication Open Access Airport Development Impact On The Sustainable Development Of The National Tourism Industry(The Turkish Online Journal of Design Art and Communication, 2016-07) Alaeerad, Elham; Khoshnood, MohsenWith the development of transportation industry especially in air transportation and the increase in the number of inland and outland journeys, tourism has gradually taken a new form and nowadays it is a lucrative and infinite industry. When the soil pH is below 5, Al is solubilized in the soil water and absorbed by plant roots. Absorbed Al inhibits root elongation severely within hours. Al toxicity is a very important limitation to worldwide crop production, because 50% of the world’s potentially arable lands are acidic. Thus, many research has been conducted to understand the mechanism of Al toxicity and resistance which is important for stable food production in future. Al resistance can be achieved by mechanisms that facilitate Al exclusion from the root apex and/or by mechanisms that confer the ability of plants to tolerate Al in the plant symplasm. However, despite intense research efforts, there are many aspects of Al toxicity and resistance remain unclear. In this review, Al toxicity and resistance mechanisms are described with the physiological and molecular basis.Publication Open Access American Myth Trough Perspective of Turkish Newspapers; After September 11(İstanbul Kültür Üniversitesi Yayınları, 2003-06) Gündeş, Simten; Tuncel, BerinSöylen kavramının genel tanımlarından yola çıkarak Amerikan söyleninin görünüşü 12-29 Eylül tarihleri arasında yayımlanan 6 ulusal Türk gazetesinin birinci sayfa manşetleri taranarak yapı ötesi yaklaşımla incelenmiştir.
